2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Im generally one of the agony aunt/bed wetters and if im honest im not as sold on Flanders as others are but its pick 7 in an at best mediocre draft.

There is no question Flanders improves us immediately and hes 24 not 34.

I rate that weve gotten his comittment and gotten the deal done quick and easy, no faffing about, means we can work on more stuff.

Hard to understand any negativity about it TBH.

No ones calling you a traitor mate. But you're actively choosing to ignore the bigger picture and ignoring the strategy at play here:

1. We only have Nas for 2 more years atm, so we need to push for results to ensure he stays for longer.

2. Those draft picks you're referring to take 3-4+ years to develop. Nas only became "elite" this year, we're waiting on Pou to hopefully deliver and Tauru is young and raw. Windhager only stopped being known as a tagger at the back end of this year, and Mitch Owens is still a ways off.

3. When was the last time, St Kilda, a small market club in Melbourne, usually 6th choice for most players was able to recruit good (maybe not elite) players in their early 20's to come here? Flanders is 24 ffs. We're not hawks or geelong, players like Danger and Merrett aren't gonna nominate us are they?

4. This draft has been noted by many to already be a weak draft.

So with all due respect, pull your head out of your ass regarding this "FRP can never be traded" strategy. Its very obvious why the club did it and thats why people are having a go at you. Does that mean it'll work? No, but the logic is sound.
Get over yourself.
Very good post.
I’ll add number 5.

5. Our club has drafted the most players out of any club over the past 4 years.
We will not miss one more 18 year old by not taking a first rounder this year. The year, pretty much everyone agrees, is the best year to do so.

There are judges of this draft who rate it the worst of all time.

Let that sink in.
Not just one or two either.

I always assume the drafts are overhyped or overcricized but ive genuinely never heard the experts talk about a draft in such shitty terms, especially the last before they are compromised for a couple years.

Its fascinating.

I'll be cheering louder than anyone. Decades of pain will do that.

I'm just not convinced trading FRPs for non-elite 24 year olds is a winning strategy.

Again, I'll be very happy if I'm proven wrong.
Anytime you can trade in a 150 - 200 game elite player for a draft pick you take it and run.

I’d understand your argument if Flanders had a few seasons left but he’s entering his prime. Once again we’re out of the lock it in he’ll be a gun mid range, we’d be hoping for a player to slide or taking best avaliable.

Surely that’s a win.

He's gonna be a champ.

Now Johnno says pick 18 plus a player is the right cost for Roma.

The Purple Headed Warrior agrees.

FMD, hard to keep up with their changing takes.

Pick 18 plus SDK you say?

Purple will agree with whichever dominant male figure is talking. In other circumstances I'd feel sorry for whatever school bullying he obviously went through, but in this case, he can GAGF.

A great year for Essendon to have a truckload of first rounders 😂

Its why i reckon the Merett talk has gone dead TBH. They wont be interested in any more picks this year and futures get watered down.

So Aleer in and Roma out are the only two, essentially, confirmed deals we will be involved in.

McKenzie sounds dead unless Merett happens (which honestly seems less likely with every passing hour)
Steele also seems less likely at this stage

Would have to be something pretty out of the ordinary IMO. Something to get back into mid first round for Mini Pou i wouldnt mind.

Yeah I’m not sure how true it is.

I didn’t watch the championships this year and haven’t really followed it like I normally do so I have no idea. Last years draft was meant to be lousy early in the year then players came on and everyone fell in love with it.
