Current Draft Picks:
Round 1: 1, 2, 13

List Spots Available (39 of 48):
• Main list (33 of 38) - 5* (in: Starcevich, Young out: Allen, Ryan, Chesser, Hunt, Petruccelle, Jamieson)
• Cat A rookie list (5 of 8) - 3* (in: Robertson (pending), out: Rawlinson)
• Cat B rookie list (1 of 2) - 2 (out: Livingstone)

* Based on Dewar being upgraded after the maximum 3 years on the rookie list. Hutchinson may also have been upgraded but this isn’t confirmed - if it is we will have 4 main and 4 rookie list spots open

This draft is Duursma, little bit of daylight but not Harley Reid can’t stare directly at it kind of daylight - then 10-15 decent prospects before the talent peters out a little quicker than in most draft years.

I love what we have done so far to slide up to 12 at the expense of 16 and use a pick in the 20s to get a far from over the hill, clearly best 22 player in.

Be super interesting when we get pick 2 if we consider further splitting one of those early picks to maximise the amount of low first round selections we bring in if we think it’s relatively even after Duursma, before a quick drop off into the late teen picks

I agree we need a ruck but more importantly we need an experienced midfielder above all else and it looks like we are not chasing one.
I reckon our list strategy should be all about 2028. That will be the final year of Harleys current contract and a point where most of our current young players start to peak.

To me that means hoarding our early draft picks for the next two years and using them on elite players including mids or other list gaps like a ruck rather than spending them on an experienced players. Our ideal in 2028 is an elite cohort of 20-24 players all hitting their straps at the same time, even if it means another two years of struggle.

A pick in 20’s probably gets chewed up by an academy bid. Jones had a stronger draft year football wise but i doubt Williams gets past pick 20-30 when it’s a draft where recruiters will be looking for players that have elite traits.

Darcy Jones 2.9sec 20m
7.7 sec agility
Pick 21

Lance Collard 2.9sec 20m
8.15 sec agility
Pick 28

Tyler Williams 2.8 sec 20m
7.8 sec Agility
Pick ?

Hopefully pick 33 is kept for cover. He's a level above Malakai in terms of his speed over the deck and hurt factor up the ground.

Find me someone who gets a bigger boner than Barrett over a club chasing trades regardless of whether they make sense. Just loves it when a club is active

Top 10 in open pool is below

1.Willem Duursma
2.Cooper Duff-Tytler
3.Dyson Sharp
4.Xavier Taylor
5.Sullivan Robey
6.Sam Grlj
7.Sam Cumming
8.Aidan Schubert
9.Lachy Dovaston
10.Josh Lindsay

Keep 1 - Take Duursma.

Consider trading 2 if Essendon keen on Duursma. Wouldn't want to drop below 5. So would need to be 5 + 20? If not, then just take Sharp.

If get 5 then you're looking at maybe Sharp if he slides, Robey/Grijl/Cummings/

If get 7 from GC, then Cumming/Schubert

If did the 2 for 5 and 20, then looking at Tredgold, Phillipou, Rodriguez types.

Not trading 2 for 5 + 20 when there’s a small chance a Williams bid comes before 20 anyway. Keep an eye out for Carlton post Curnow trade looking to move up with Sydney’s first and the TDK compo pick.

Of that 35, it appears only 3 will be on the rookie list - Brock, McCarthy and Newton. Dewar needs to be upgraded whilst Maric and Hutchinson (per @eaglevision who’s mail is usually correct) have already been

Yep this is my understanding and also seems to make sense with the way we didn’t include Dev in the Starc/pick swap deal. Only thing that’s going to be difficult is balancing those spots between the main list and rookie list when we have 4 FS/NGAs which we don’t know if they will attract bids.

Not sure we even want Williams after his frankly galling decision to whore himself out for other teams at the combine rather than spending the weekend selling discount Campbell Chesser jerseys at the club superstore.

What other acts of abject self interest will we see next? Will he draw a salary rather than doing the right thing by the team that raised him from a wee lad and playing for free?

But its a moot point if he gets taken in the woke top 40 because then we couldn’t stop the steal.

Agree totally.
I think this also mirrors what the list management team have been trying to implement since last trade and draft.
We have had a crack at everyone, only a few will come and that's where we are for the next couple of years.

2028 team has a big haul of 2027 traded in Warner, Rivers, N Martin in our sights.

Fill up with role players like Fonti and whoever else we can convince to come home.

Our ruck stocks are shit, not through lack of trying, English/Cameron/Marshall all tried to get in the last year.

A Reid will be a very decent ruck in 3 years, unless we
get someone to fall over the line it looks like him and drafting either BVR in 2026 or Walsh in 2027 to replace BW.
It will be interesting to see our KPD stocks after the draft & trade period.

Who are we into in 2025, is Shcubert our KPD prospect, Thredgold, Ainsworth or Stumpf.
Feel we are into 1 of these in the draft and we have D Shanahan as an NGA next year which probably rounds out our KPD stocks.

I think that’s the top 10 as well. We should be able to get Suns pick 7, worst case we get Blues pick 10. After that I reckon we keep 1 and shuffle the other two around to land our #2 and #3 targets and that’s us done.

Hutch looks a natural to take over the Cripps role.
Good on a lead, good tank and good mark, totally looks likely his role imo.

Good call with Hutchinson HHF runs both ways all day.

Dev comes in as the Mark Hutchings premership run with mid.

Newton the Tony Armstrong small defensive forward type who can pinch hit on ball

Thats three role players sorted nice and cheap.

McCarthy as a MSD pickup slotting in as a gun half back another bit of good fortune. Could end up being our 2nd best rookie ever. ;)

The pieces are slowly coming together.
