2025 AFL Draft and Trade Dates:

Fri Oct 3 - Fri Oct 10: 2025 Free Agency Period
Mon Oct 6 - Wed Oct 15: 2025 Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period
Wed Nov 19 - Thu Nov 20: 2025 Telstra AFL Draft

We live in a society (wspecially those politically leaning left and younger people) who like to frame society as success is due to opression or corruption.. Not hard work.

Hard work and competence is never accepted anymore as a reason for success. It doesnt exist and is an excuse or cop out.

This leads to anger resentment victimhood etc etc which we even see amongst supporters in the AFL.

Example- geelong have inequities giving them an advantage... Geelong have an unfair stadium advantage... Geelong have a trading and player aquisition advantage... Geelong cheat with hocking bla bla ( more bitter stuff) but its always back to that same logic.. That success is inequality based, not competency based

All the players use to want to live in Melbourne and the big Melbourne clubs would get all the players. It's all changed now, and those clubs don't like it.

We are going into 26 with Stanley again

Cats wil be hoping he is purely backup only... That 'WAS' the plan this season too but Conway and Edwards were injured all year.
At least in 2026, with an extra bench spot, we can potentially play 2 ruckman and give Conway or Edwards some exposure... I have higher hopes now for Edwards over Conway

I reckon Conway's ceiling is higher than Edwards's, if he can ever get the body right. He's very hard at the contest, and I think if he ever reaches his potential he'd be almost another inside mid. We saw flashes of it in the VFL and his few AFL appearances. As good as they've been, Blitz and Rhys aren't that kind of ruckman and neither is Edwards. The last ruck we had in that vein was Mumford.

Three first round picks for Curnow is easily the stupidest trade offer ever done.

This will not go well.
I disagree... This year the First draft round is HEAVILY compromised, with our first selection likely to slide down 6-8 selections.
2026 draft will likely be less compromised with the changes to 'bidding' using a maximum of 2 picks only and not just junk picks in the 30's and 40's, still, you would expect Geelong (with Curnow) to finish top 4, so a 15-18 draft pick.
2027 draft will be a mess with Tassie given basically half of the first round selections. So again, if we were to finish top 4, our first pick could be mid to high 20's.

So to swap say, Pick 24, pick 16 and pick 28 for Curnow.. I'd back that play in.

And also for consideration is Geelong's strike rate with lower draft picks compared to their first round selections...
I'd back Mackie and Wells in, they often get the first round selection wrong but find the gems later on...

Don't bring your political opinions into it. Geez, are you saying right-wing supporters don't t criticise Geelong because they just laud hard work!

For those who may not be aware, here's how the 2027 draft is currently compromised by Tasmania's picks:

First pick in the 2027 national draft

The Devils will get the number one selection in the 2027 National Draft along with picks 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13, but selections 5, 7, 11 and 13 must be traded to other clubs either for players or other draft picks.

The club will also get the first selection in each subsequent round of the 2027 draft as well as further draft concessions in the 2028 and 2029 national drafts.

The Western Bulldogs copped a 20k fine, all suspended, for this in 2022 and the Brisbane Lions copped a 10k fine, 5k suspended, for the same in 2017.

Whats funny is the mouthbreather supporters trying to compare it to Carlton who got done for salary cap cheating and brown paper bags in 2003, or Adelaide who got a 300k fine etc for the Tippett scandal that was overpaying Tippett outside the cap and draft tampering.

And I would imagine in the next 5 years we will see ANOTHER club when audited get the same as we have.
The other thing is, HAD Geelong had their reporting/paperwork in order, their would be NOTHING to report... No fine, nothing to see here..

They didn't get fined and reprimanded for what they DID, it was the way they reported what they did that was the issue..

I don't think Curnow is a need, however, I love the offer. Mackie looking to force some hands perhaps.
Force Saints to accept this year's first?
Force Swans to cough up a massive offer?
Or Force port to take the compo pick next trade period?
I so hope so.
I just can't imagine a world where we give up three first round picks to get Curnow. Sure, he will probably go and kick 50 in his first year if he gets here. But for Cameron who was filling a real need and is a freak, we got two picks back and had the other first rounders from other trades and the Ablett compo.
It's fecking insane. Unless we have a bunch of pick 60s Humphries lined up over the next two years, its just too much.

Incredible that an unprecedented offer of 3 first rounders is laughable. I guess we take it as a compliment that everyone is convinced they will all end up being around pick 20 or so
It's laughable in terms of:

- 2025 first round pick will end up pick 20+

- 2027 first round pick could be pushed back anywhere from 4 -> 7 picks straight up, and that's before compensation picks, academy bids etc

- 2026 yet to be compromised but could still be impacted by academy bids, whatever FA compensation looks like etc

As someone said yesterday, there's first round picks and then there's first round picks - if you knew for sure that at least one of those picks would be top 10, then suddenly it's a deal given much more thought by Carlton

But there's a good element of uncertainty with where draft picks will end up which is why Carlton want the more certainty around the inclusion of player/s in any trade for Curnow

The reality of the situation:
  • Until 2025 Marshall was No.1 ruck at Saints
  • in 2026 Marshall will be 2nd fiddle to TDK
  • Marshall is unhappy and asked to be traded to Geelong
  • Saints apparently saying absolutely no. Marshall is a wanted man who may not even be selected in the firsts every week.

Not the worst result. Others have noted his questionable value as a tap ruckman. He's 30.

Deep down, the Saints are possibly miffed at being forced to keep him.

Might as well throw a bone to a player stuck in a logjam. North's Brynn Teakle (yes, I know, whodafuk is he?) is a UFA last time I checked; these stats are from 70% TOG

Nope, no, never, not on... How many more ways can no be said 😂

A couple of years back I was watching him in the VFL when they were trying to play him behind the ball to aid in his development he looked all at sea - it's not a move I'd be making
He played some good stints in the ruck. Could be a possibility.
Be interesting to have a ruck that you don’t have to hold your breath when they line up for goal :p

Geelong is in a great position here. Two robust offers for two contracted players that would improve us but showing the restraint necessary to not overplay our hand.

If we get one, great. If we don’t, not the end of the world.

Really enjoying Mackie’s time in the big recruiter’s chair.
