2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

Declaring that we are walking away does multiple things.

A) Gives Aleer time to find another home if GWS don’t lower their asking price

B) Tells GWS that we aren’t fluffing around, so come and make a deal or don’t.

Just because a player commits to he club doesn’t mean a trade has to be done, especially if the club has an unrealistic ask or is asking for something the other club can’t give.

Not everything has to be friendly
agreed. **** the optics, what good has it done for us as a club so far

It seems like the outrage from this whole Aleer affair is that we didn't do the usual dance of haggling with GWS up until the last minute notwithstanding they named their price from the outset. Why do we have to assume that the Giants would have softened on their position? I guess the only issue is there is the argument that if a deal couldn't have been worked out that we could have threatened the PSD.

Anyways, I will lose no sleep over this and I'm pumped how well we have done thus far in this off season.

Its funny cause the convention informally states that you sit at the table until you do the deal or it expires and in theory we could have done that and saved face but that would no doubt be a worse outcome for Aleer, the giants and his management.

Were the villains here cause weve bucked convention.

Weird thing trade week.

This guy sucks.

I didn’t even see the original argument over list spots but I couldn’t care less
Well its the reason we upped and left.
Not because of trade price.
Not because we now don't want Aleer.
Because we can't fit him in with all the information we have from the first half of trade period.

Things can change, Cats may come back to us on Marshall with an improved offer, but it sounds like Soldo may be prioritised instead....

Very interesting though to see that 2 of the 7 players Dylan Smith manages are Aleer & Derksen.

Both backflips by clubs recruiting those players.
Yep, he didn't have the draft capital right between the clubs.
F3rd is fair
McCartney stated a f2nd is involved which suggests more probably a f3rd.
That is too much for Aleer
Personally, I think the giants are worried about issues for their key backs and want to keep Aleer hence, McCartney playing the nice guy routine caring about Aleer to get him to sign the contract on not much money.
Personally, we should've continued negotiations to avoid the media pile on as the narrative has changed to make us the bad guys.

Melbourne could absolutely hold GWS over a barrel with the Oliver negotiations after this whole Aleer business.

Contracted player

That you got to commit to your club

Now you have to meet our demands

Issue though is Melbourne have told Oliver to take a hike. I doubt Dees take him back if a deal doesn't happen. Giants are in a better position, I think.

It also would be funny if we stuff up the Oliver trade because they didn't suspect Aleer would be on their books going forward.

How dare we give a player notice that a trade looks unlikely to be done because the other club is demanding something we don’t have or something we don’t deem suitable

The absolutes youre talking in are wild.

Id argue it looks very very much like we sweved on Aleer by getting JSOS and upping Wilkies salary and this is all a bit of a smokeshow (which i would note is still the right call for us) but either way, just stop.

You think its the list spots, others think differently, its the biggest story out of trade week so far and were in the middle of it, if you have nothing more to offer than screaming about list spots then just quit, we know your position.

So assuming I understand this correctly:

St.Kilda signed 2 free agents

5 or 6 trades have been sucessfully completed this trade period. St.Kilda was the buyer or seller in half of those.

St.Kilda approached 2 contracted players, and subsequently completed quick and painless negotiations. Clubs walked away happy in both cases

We told our captain that we were happy for him to look around and would facilitate a deal if he wanted more guarenteed playing opportunity. He said he would prefer to stay. We obliged

2 contracted St.Kilda players were approached, but neither the Dogs or Cats made a close to ballpark offer to St.Kilda (not the player), so negotiations went nowhere and both players are staying

But...

Because we walked away from negotiating with the Giants WE are the team that is difficult to deal with? And the current narrative is:

"St Kilda will pay a price for this, make no mistake about it. Managers will sit back and take notice of this. This is why this doesn't happen. For all the times we say 'Oh would you walk that deal back?' It's easy for us to say it, it's next to impossible for clubs to do it because you run the risk of every player agent going 'You know what, I don't know if we do a deal with St Kilda because it's not a guarantee'."

Youre missing a couple of bits here

  • We were reported prior to trade week to be the most difficult club to deal with (by a poll of the clubs)
  • Its being assumed (if not reported) that we have walked away from the Roma deal as well

You could quite easily spin the story to the narrative youve presented and you wouldnt be wrong but right now its only saints that would do that.

Great post

Dees have to take him back, hes contracted.

He might play at Casey all year and become the highest paid twos player in history but they cant do anything else unless he retires

Ohhh so it's all about relativity is it?

So if you sell your house and out an offer for a new home. The bloke buying your house pulls out at the last minute and all your plans fall apart.

"Oh well, I'm just so thrilled to be a home owner in this housing market. How lucky am I to have a house to sell? What a great day it is".
I think anybody would be thrilled to own a house.

Anyway, I am not up for a fight. We have different opinions and so be it. All good mate!

Im not sure I understand how we could "walk away" from a deal on Marshall.

We have a contracted player. A club is trying to get him to leave (apparently for the second year in a row). They made us an offer (25 first round). We countered (F1). They said no, and offered that pick to Carlton for Curnow. We said Marshall is staying, and we are happy to have him.

Other than having no interest in engaging the discussion further (which we have no obligation to do, and is in Geelong's interests much more than ours), how have we "walked away" here?

Listening to Jason McCartney on trade radio GWS seem pissed off at Saints.

The only reason that would be is if they were happy to offload Aleer. Otherwise surely you would be happy to keep a required player
McCartney acted like he cared about the player and we didn't. They just didn't care enough about him to give him playing time and a big contract his manager wanted. Again, it's business. No hard feelings. As they say, don't hate the player, hate the game (the game that is the nature of business dealings and uncertainty is always there until you signed the dotted line, even that's not worth the paper it's signed on these days)
