Recommitted Zach Merrett [UFA 2027] - Wanted a trade to Hawthorn, but it didn't get done

my optics is we are pushing hard for McKenzie to be part of this deal.

I was OK with the deal before, but i'm starting to chubb up now.
If McKenzie was included then the 2026 1st will be withdrawn or the Bombers will be giving there 2026 2nd. It's just the way it will be. In saying that McKenzie isnt on the table.

Explain how accepting this trade helps Essendon? Bear in mind they have around 4 list spots and currently hold 2x top 10 picks and are bringing in 2 NGA, so the first this year is probably useless to them, so it's effectively trading Merrett for Hustwaite and a late first rounder next year.

That is arguably the most bizarre take ive seen in this discussion.

So you dont think they would delist someone else to open up a spot to take a top 10 pick?? Are you new to the sport? You must be.

This trade helps Essendon because if they hold him, its 12 months of pain, shattered culture and then next year he is traded for a single first round pick. Thats it.

Wasting your breath, Essendon just don’t get it

So you are happy that your hero would treat a fellow human being to the torture of having to play for Essendon and as an added humiliation play under B. Scott?

Dunno why you are sending me this rubbish?

I said i was OK with the deal Hawks put forward?

Merrett isnt on the table either?

Have you not looked at the state of their list?

How does pick 14(after bids) help Essendon in any meaningful way when all they're really doing is swapping Merrett for Hustwaite?

Do you think i's A-OK for Hawthorn to go around ruining relationships between player and club to get them in on the cheap?

What if Mitchell comes for Sheezel next time?

Give him up for Ned Reeves and 2 late firsts?

Hang on a minute I though Essendons we up in arms about the Hawks offering a player up who was playing VFL footy.

So they now say they would do the deal if the Hawks offered up another bloke who was playing VFL footy.

Dear oh dear that’s a Jimmy Hird type hypocrite backflip 😮

What backflip?

I said form the get go my preference was McKenzie + Pick 9

why are you quoting me as some kind of sounding board for all Essendon supporters?

Its 10:30am - do some work ya bum

north fan’s hatred of essendon blinds them to the reality of the situation. they’d set their club alight if it led to even a morsel of suffering for the club.

No need to know.

Even as an Essendon supporter you would understand the reaction a player would have if they were asked.

How would you like to play for Essendon and as an added bonus you get to play under B.Scott.
yeah totally, imagine having to play in front of big crowds in blockbuster games. The torture. I mean, as we all know, nothing ever changes and clubs never improve performance over time

Yeah while i tend to agree it's a good offer I can also understand reluctance on Essendons part. He's the only thing holding them together
what a club... a club desperately holding on to a player who desperately wants out.... take the offer ess.

The Hawks will not trade Frenchy, it’s pretty simple.

Instead the Hawks offered up the best deal in trade history for a 30yo.

Not my fault the clowns running Essendon are too stupid to to accept it.

BTW I have a weeks holiday off work, Whats your excuse?

yeah but Mckenzie isnt crap like Tsatas is.

Essendon last night rejected the highest value deal for a 30 year old in the history of trading.

They need to give their head a wobble and realise where they are at with this.

I dunno, Tstatas puts up "bIg StAtZ" in the VFL which apparently makes Hustwaite good...

That's great, man. Also completely off topic of you're original point which I replied to. You said "Essendon realise they have to add more if McKenzie is involved." And pretty simply put, ah - no, no we won't have to haha. Might be a bit more shuffling of assets and not as much stuff is coming back "with" McKenzie, but you're not getting Merrett + stuff. As much as poor Sammy might think it's unfair.

No mention of the broadcasters not even showing one of these said blockbuster games on free to air?

Or everyone turning off the TV because they were sick of Essendon stinking up games?

Or the fact Essendon will be relegated to a Richmond like fixture next year as far as prime time slots are concerned.

To quote the great Jimmy Hird “I am as shocked to be sitting here”

I did notice you never addressed having to play under B.Scott, again refer to my Jimmy Hird quote.

Could you try to make your Barrass-hurt less visible.

Hawthorn were contacted by Allen’s management, same as Brisbane. Hawthorn were contacted by Merrett’s management.

Much to consider, thanks Jimmy Hird

Agree. Hawks have chased Merrett but aren’t willing to make a serious offer. They’ve really left him in a terrible spot publicly and at the Bombers. Very sad how the Hawks have treated poor ZM. Sad!

1. The bids mean nothing as Essendon cannot access those players taken with those picks anyway. It is the most redundant conversation of all trade periods.
2. They can still make moves on their list. They can delist players and bring others in via draft, DFAs and SSP. Their list isnt locked in. The list isnt finalised until post christmas.
3. Giving them pick 9, allows them to make a proper approach to get up in the draft if they want to, or potentially push one of their top 10 picks into next year

Genuine question, how have you landed on them swapping Merrett for Hustwaite.

The amount of capital that Hawthorn offered is worth more than what Brisbane sent to Freo for Neale (25 years old), more than what Richmond gave GWS for Taranto (25 years old) and more than what WCE paid for Kelly (24 years old).
