Recommitted Rowan Marshall [OOC 2027] - Requested Trade to Geelong, didn't get done

I mean Cats didn't overpay and Saints keep a guy they want.
Only one who gets hurt here is Marshall, poor bloke.

Why, because he’s held accountable to a contract he was willing to sign after reeping the front loaded money of it?

I think he will be doing ok

Definitely someone's alt.
No newbie is this invested in an opposition list manager's sensible decision not to overpay.
And immediately starts insulting everyone with 'champ' and 'moron' to give himself away 🤣

I often wonder about these alts....are they really truly thinking "Damn I'm landing some brutal devastating blows on Geelong here" ??

So we ended up offering the F1 St Kilda was bleating about the whole trade period - PLUS more - and they still said no.

They sure better hope that Marshall discovers some forward craft (career high of 15 goals, is it?) and/or that we don’t finally fall off the cliff next year….

Except the 'more' adds nothing to the deal.

Pick 40 would likely get used on a Fincher bid so adds nothing to the deal since we will get him anyway.
And a late 2027 pick - so something after 50 after all the Tassie concessions - also is a pointless pick.

And maybe if the F1 was offered before the final 3 minutes, other picks could have been negotiated around it so both teams were happy. But you can't finally offer the pick that was asked for on day 1 with so little time left and expect a deal to be struck.

At the end of the day, this thread has dozens of Saints fans saying ‘19 + F2 or walk away’ or ‘F1 or walk away.’

Saints were offered both of those deals and still walked away. The Curnow deal was revised with five mins left and agreed on, so the fact we offered our F1 late is irrelevant - the fact is we still did.

Given how tight the top 9 was this year, there’s every chance that Geelong finishes 5-10th next year.

If TDK is a bit underwhelming because he’s definitively shown over his career that he’s more effective as the sole ruck, and you end up having turned down a pick in the 9-12 range for Marshall, will be have been worth it?

What if Zac Bailey, Zac Butters etc are interested in St Kilda and you’ve turned down a valuable trade asset which could have helped?

Seems very short-sighted to me, but it is clear that St Kilda’s sole focus is on some form of improvement in the next two seasons so you don’t lose Nasiah in 2027, as opposed to making decisions to benefit you in both the short and long-term.

Plenty of deals get done in the last 10 minutes. Saints just didnt want to trade him which is fair enough.

Yes deals get done very late. But those are deals where the base has been formed and they are haggling over small details. It would be very unusual for an entire offer to change in the final minutes and the deal get done.

The Curnow deal spent a day haggling over 1 pick. The main basis of the deal was set so very different then a final minutes attempt to finally base a deal around an F1 while giving zero time for a proper counter offer to be made.

And it wasn't 'short sighted' to take a deal that didnt suit us. Other clubs dont have to make decisions based around what is good for Geelong.

Nobody said you had to. You’re making it sound like St Kilda turned the deal down because it was Geelong rather than because it wasn’t a good deal.

You also didn’t answer whether there’ll be regrets if you end up having rejected a top 10 pick for him, or what will happen if playing two rucks stifles TDK which any Carlton supporter will tell you has been the case throughout his entire career.

I think the Merrett and Marshall news is good for the AFL landscape.

ie Bottom 10 teams key contracted players being "whined" and dined by top 4 teams who then don't follow through with equivalent trade value being rebuffed.

Player managers will need to better balance length of contract given the inflation being offered to traded/free agent players.

Agreed. Not sure if it's because my club's was directly involved, but to me, there was a bit of a "here we go" inevitability to the Marshall deal going through as we added the second rounder to our offer on the last day. As there was about Merrett leaving Essendon, it just seems that these things go through one way or another, once the discussions and the sabre rattling (in Merrett's case) gets to a certain point.

I wouldn't have minded Marshall in the short term and obviously our list management team was keen, but there's clear benefits for Geelong to walk away, as obviously it can be considered a win for St Kilda, having not been blown away by the offer.

I feel like a bit of a broken record, but it gives us a full set of draft picks, combined with a clear opportunity for Toby Conway (23 in April, year five on our list) to establish himself as our number 1.

Good luck actually making a prelim, let alone grand final again for the first time in 16 seasons.

Geelong has stayed contending by not making desperate overpayment for B graders. St Kilda's record speaks for itself.

Impressive that you posted that with what I could assume was a face full of tears.

The Cats offered a poor deal and didn't get a good player that fits a need for you. Bad luck. You go into next year assuming you contend again, but we will have to see I guess.

Anyone need a hug this morning? They're free......

It didn't happen, we can all remove the salt and move on.

Geelong will still be finals bound next years, hopefully saints too.
St Kilda holding a required player if ridiculous overs weren't offered was always their right. I acknowledged it several times throughout.

The "tantrums" are merely level headed responses mocking those screeching "hurr durr Mackie wouldn't pay fair price, good luck getting smashed in a grand final again!!".

That's a seriously sad routine that likely has a bit to do with the club's trajectories over the past 20 years.
