Well, kids. It's all over

From the Age...

St Kilda president Rod Butterss and his fellow directors have quit the board of the AFL club.
Butterss, as well as fellow directors Glen Casey, Mark Kellett, Andrew Bassat and Ray King, on Tuesday announced in a statement they were standing down.
They were facing a serious challenge by a Greg Westaway-led rival ticket called St Kilda Footy First.
Butterss said he and the board were "not prepared to submit the club to a costly legal battle in the courts which is scheduled to commence tomorrow".
"The resignations take effect immediately to allow the Footy First group the opportunity to outline their plans for success to the members at this Friday night's Trevor Barker awards night," the statement said.
Butterss said a "smooth transition and a stable environment were important to enable the club to focus on the issues that really mattered such as signing sponsors and preparing for the 2008 season".
Butterss had been on the Saints board since 1999 and was elected president in 2001.
The 48-year-old was also a former reserves player at the club.

terrible news, why didnt foot first step down!

I agree... If we don't win a flag now then there'll be no-one else left to blame except the players... We have a new coach and now a new board, maybe we can blame the Telstra Dome next! Perhaps the list is over-rated???

As much as I thought RB was a bit of a tool he has def done more good than bad at the club! Such a shame... This is def him and the other board members being clubmen however! Well done for salvaging a bit of dignity (it would have been a lot more dignity had the GT saga not been rubbished through the media).

No dignity mate, he quit because he knew he had no choice. I just wish this had happened before he got rid of Grant Thomas.

Couldn't agree with you more Modra93.

NH, your posts are classic. Sometimes they are quite insightful, and other times you remind me of an angry teenager... So young, so angry, damn that rap music! It is great. I think we need a NH board so I can log on and get some perspective every now and then :)

Have you read the demonblog. I think you need to write a Saintsblog... Would be classic!

And it is hard to not bring up GT whenever referring to the rise and fall of Butterss. I'm glad GT is gone tho... Hopefully I'll be glad Rod is gone too... Not so sure at this stage tho!

See ya Rod, thanks for the memories!

Best thing for the club just to get it over and done with... He did very well for us, got us back with a healthy financial base and away from merger talk

Nexus is about to explode right about now!
Well Nexus, i must say
you were right
about Butters leaving that is
not about how we will go in 08!

I heard Rod on SEN this afternoon. I thought he left with real dignity and class. I appreciated his efforts and he should be congratulated on his overall efforts. I for one will be getting behind the new board and here's hoping they can do their best for our boys and the supporters. Here's to 2008 :thumbsu:.

are you serious? This was the best way to go out, its not about who wins and loses and he knew this. He and footy first both had the St Kilda Football Club at best wishes and as soon as Butterss realised that the best thing 'for the club' was to let them have the reigns he stood down. Couragous move instead of sinking the whole ship. Also GT's time was also up. Butterss served us well but its time just like Kevin Sheedy's

Nathan Burke's group may not get an arm chair ride into the boardroom.

FYI - there is another group of Saints supporters forming an alternate ticket. Whether they follow through and contest the election remains to be seen.

IMHO - they'd be wasting their time, but being St Kilda, you never never quite know what might happen.

Any scources or more details?

Can't say - as they haven't made up their minds on whether they will definitely stand at the election. Some well known names amongst the group though.

BTW - source is one of the members of the 'group'.

And FWIW - I've got no motivation to stir up your mob (not until next footy season anyway). Just happens to be that I've had beers over the past week with a few St Kilda people that I know and do some work with - and have been given some mail - including the board stepping down.

Didn't see any harm in sharing some of the news with you over here today.

That is fine mate, we are not Carlton supporters and appreciate input from others if presented in a fair manner. However I was under the impression the election has been called off, or is it that the outgoing board will just not contest?

Dunno - today may have changed things for them, as they don't really have a sitting board to challenge.

He should have quit weeks ago, rightly or wrongly he held on too long

Think one of us has to head down to Moorabbin with a dictionary with the word 'STABILITY' underlined, we never seem to let things settle and when we are onto a good thing (from a club perspective - optimistic/nieve viewpoint being no personality clashes should ever be bigger than the club itself) we change it?

Good coaches - Sheldon, Alves, Thomas and now a board that has built on the decent platform that Plympton left behind.

Butterss made mistakes, but what is wrong with consistant profits and sustained success? Are those involved with the St. Kilda FC become bored with regularity?

We are talking about a club who has won 26 wooden spoons!

i liked the way he said he wasn't prepared to drag the club through the courts. was almost sincere. i bet if footy first hadn't got so many proxies, and he still had a half decent chance of winning the election, he wouldn't have minded the courts so much.

Exactly right len_dog.....the only reason why he quit was he knew he had no hope. This should have happened before he sacked Thomas. In 12 months time posters on here and SAINTSATIONAL will be wanting Thomas to be re-instated:thumbsu: Nothing against Lyon but the decision to get rid of Thomas has set our club back 5 years.:thumbsd:

the decision to axe thomas as much as i disagreed with it at the time has brought in a sense of freshness to the club. with gt at the end (whether it be due to injures or not) i felt we were being overtaken by club improving at more rapid rates than us

So finishing 9th and becoming the least scoring club in the AFL gives you a warm fuzzy feeling does it?:thumbsd:

not at all, but at least i feel were improving again with the pressure we put on.. you must take into account a enitrly new gameplan and more injurys again... we will be better for this
