The AFL were quick to say no to Hawthorn's application for NGA status Oliver Greeves. No sure why the AFL are taking so long to give an answer and be done with it. Would have thought it would have been done by now.
Thats because Oliver Greeves is in this years draft. Technically they can be as fast for Dougie while waiting until next year.

I think the cheapest way to get him is when he gets drafted elsewhere and asks for Trade home

Time to start the 'Sleeps with the night light on' stories.

Can anyone jog my memory on why we are anticipating we’ll be able to get him? Was the AFL planning to allow us to match bids on metro Indigenous players as well as rural?
They actually already do that. It has just been limited to after pick 40 until last year when they opened up all NGA kids being available for all clubs at any pick.

You know, so a perenially shit Essendon can get access to their first round NGA prospect.

If anyone else thinks of drafting him if the AFL screws us (likely) then they run a HUGE risk of him leaving you would assume. Hopefully Norf draft him if that is the case because who would want to stay there.

Doesn't leave much for Geoff Parker to do.
Depends on….

So the AFL can make up a new rule in 2 minutes for someone with a history DV and drugs but can’t make a decision on NGA. Got it
No I get it. They actually have to be very very careful here you don’t want challenges appearing out of nowhere from other clubs. You don’t want to set a precedent that allows other clubs to find loopholes for non-genuine.

And it’s a bureaucracy.

This is a tricky one.

Dougie could be number one. Like this year, and most of the past few years and 2027, the top handful of picks could be closed to the open draft.

Dougie is fringe eligibility wise for sure. But has publicly said he wants to play for port. His brother plays for port. His dad played for port. There is a high chance he gets drafted by someone else and then wants to come home to port.

I guess if you’re the AFL do you want:
  • a slightly dubious NGA link
  • a player to be drafted and then leave the club straight away
  • a player to slide in the draft to get to port, thereby looking like draft tampering but is exactly what happened with Perkins, Smith and that other Essendon player from many years ago.

Why is it dubious? He's indigenous, end of story.
