fair to say that we weren’t going to waste any cash again after this absolute specimen
Mind you, there's a few others where the investment seemed misplaced.

I remember being at Victoria Park for a VFL game, and the Pies players were literally laughing at Eric Wallace.

Another one that comes to mind is rugby/rowing convert Tom Jeffries - suffice to say he did not know a lot about the game. Playing deep forward, he came up the middle of ground to take a mark, and then not realising he was the deepest forward, instead of waiting for the play to move up, he turned around - and kicked it to no-one.

Cat B and North Melbourne - this and other oxymorons

They require more coaching time than other players for a lower return. Unless they are someone like Alex Condon, who grew up playing footy but switched to a different sport, I think they are a bad investment.

Does anyone know the story with Setterfield?

Surely it's either injuries or he's fallen out with Bard - averaged 20 touches and 7 tackles.

It's not like * have a lot to choose from
Too slow and one dimensional.
Can only play mid.
Doesn't have the attitude to hunt the ball if its not near him.

and until the afl formally announces, I am working on the understanding we also have another 2 cat a rookie spots available at least for 1 more year

and also on the cat b rookie note saints just signed a 17 year old gun irish prodigy

This was from Marc McGowan in the Age (dated today) fwiw.

Thought I'd do a little basic research to get an idea what the success rate of Cat B rookies was. Taking 2020 (because that is long enough ago to make a call on players) there were 32 Cat B rookies. Of them, 7 are still on lists: Keane, Buckley, Callum Brown, C Jiath, Wicks, Khamis, Owies. This is more successful than I expected, but does it justify the investment? A couple of very good players, a couple of role players, and three fringe or back-up types, most never played a game.

It really has to be someone who is either a supreme athlete or played some footy as a junior to be worth a punt.
Basketball background would make some sense as well with zoning.

I don't think it really helps to count NSW zone selections like Wicks and Buckley as Cat Bs for the sake of this exercise. They were both underage academy footballers who the NSW clubs had exclusive access to.

The other part of our experience is they trial with us and go elsewhere when a bigger club takes an interest - witness Mason Cox

depends on the type of player I think. Wonder if someone who was more a tall defender type would be better suited.
They always just seem to HFs who can run with evasive skills.
A few of those successful ones would surely just be cat B based on nationality not time in the game? Khamis for example.
Wasnt there talk about us being able to claim TT as a cat B if he wasnt selected in the national draft?

Nice research. Reinforces how much of a crap shoot drafting is. A few rare examples get held up by media as something everyone should do, reality is it's a lot of luck with a sprinkling of system.
