And there’s the heartbreak.

Man, we must’ve really, really not rated him.
business decision mate, we could be every chance to be in the bottom 3, if we finished bottom for example, deficit would put us at pick 3.

Absolutely the right call to be honest as much as I have been Adam's biggest fan this year

Was it mentioned anywhere at all that we didn't rate him? Or was the bid just earlier than we could afford?

Seems so strange.
I don't think we wanted to go into deficit, plus we'd already drafted a bunch of kids who shape up to be better mids than Sweid.

If we made no other moves to try and accrue points, and we match 25 with 36, and we go into deficit next year, pick 1 is still pick 1.

2 is still 2, 3 is still 3, it potentially becomes a problem from about 4 onwards, again, if we make no other attempt to accrue points.

Only explanation is we don’t rate him against the open pool, but Freo do, I trust their eye better than I do ours.

We were around 220 points short on matching the bid - so if we couldn't/wouldn't trade a future pick for a pick worth 220 odd points in this draft, then the only other option is to have the difference deducted from next years 1st round pick. Or not match at.

Apparently Sweid was a polarising player. Some clubs rated him very highly, others didn’t. I guess we were one of the others.

Bit of a quirk of the bidding system. Would have gone into defecit and the points would have come off our FRP next season (to match a bid in the 20s ugh)

As good as Sweid is if the choice is Sweid and potentially having your FRP push back a spot next season or taking a random player pick 34 with a bunch of good players left you have you sort of have to preserve that pick

Freo rated him the most, put in the work and knew they'd land him with a bid. After we traded for pick 9 there was just no way we were going to match a 1st rnd bid. Rosa made it clear the range he saw Sweid when he accepted what is now sitting at pick 36 from Carlton.

to be fair, understand what Zach is saying but these are the sorts of decisions Dodo wouldn't have made, he'd match as he wouldn't want to take the L. Smart by Essendon to let him go, business decision, with other players still on the board too, I'll back Rosa and RFK to select one, maybe even two players with our open list spots

I'm glad we didn't match, it was too early

I'd have loved to have him but unfortunately it wasn't to be. I think we made the right decision to trade up. I just with we could have found another pick to reduce or wipe out that deficit

No we rated getting 3 guys in the top 15 more and did not want to lose points of our first round pick next year.
Obviously time will tell but for me it was the smart play.

I don't think it's a big deal, I'm sure there's plenty that come through the academy that don't get drafted at all. I'd be shocked if conversations with NGA prospects don't include cautions that bids might not be matched. Freo certainly would have done several interviews with him so it wouldn't be a shock to him that he's headed to Perth

From the academy perspective it's a success since he's ended up on a list

Having spoken with people involved with the JHA this year, we are the heavily invested Melbourne club, don’t be surprised if we join, or are joined by northern academy clubs who consistently have players poached by not matching bids.

A likely two prospects next year, a further 3 NGA’s in 2027, not matching early bids will likely see some concern and questions posed about why to bother

If it gets us access to top 10 talent (e.g. Kako) that we might not have had access to otherwise then that is why we bother

Absolutely agree, was posing a question that will likely come up
If clubs aren’t reimbursed in the investment they put in.

The old saying about getting out what you put in

Only has to net a genuine top ten pick once in 4 years to be worth it.

Some of the commentary makes it out like we have passed up Judd.

Correct. He was a mid twenties pick in a thin draft.
The reality is he is a very, very small chance of making a long career out of AFL based on history. The more likely result is he won't be on a list in 4-5 years.

I don't think he would care where he got drafted. Like most potential draftees he would just want to get on a list. I'm sure his parents would be disappointed to see their boy live on the other side of the country but thats part of the gig in being a professional AFL footballer.

I’m just not sure he has the attributes to be much more than a fringe player.

To make it at that size I reckon you need elite speed (ans opposed to not slow) and great foot skills.
