BGman I remember Sherrif from the under age tournaments. What has happened to him - is he on the outer at NSW? I saw he wasn't named in that fairly large development squad for this season.

From what I recall he was medium pace and moved the ball around a bit. His bowling didnt look it would develop to first class standard due to his lack of air speed. I thnk he would need to make it as a batter who could provide a bowling option if needed. Maybe he can go the way of Salzmann and focus more on his batting.

Teague Wylie is an interesting one. Bit of a forgotten man when people speak of Australian test prospects, but I think that's because he seemed all the rage 2-3 years ago but has ended up looking like a slower burn. Visually he can look very good, and plays some beautiful shots, especially off the back-foot. But otherwise there is something dodgy about his footwork, he shuffles around so much which isn't necessarily a bad thing but it seems like he often takes half a step too many.

Its a bit hard to find recent footage of exactly what I mean but its something I have noticed when watching him. This is just a nets session but I'd be interested to hear what some of you here who have a keener eye than me think.

If I were him, I'd spend some time watching Rahul Dravid, who also used to move around a bit but only a bit:

But in any case I think he is a big prospect, he recently got 117*, scoring over half his sides runs against an attack led by Jhye Richardson in 1st grade. 50 over match though, so I hope he will be getting plenty of red ball time this summer.

Would like to see him getting across to off a little more, looks fine with anything at the body or on leg.

love the prime ministers xi featuring the next lot of test players off the rank, and retired peter siddle.

On a side note, VICs are looking very good for the next few years with Peake and Kellaway, and it's good to see mcsweeney back in the runs

Kellaway firming as a long term opening replacement for Ussie
I dont rate the technique of Campbell, his temperament however looks in that Chris Rogers, Simon Katich dig your heels in type. Albeit with some more expansive shot making

I was going to ask the group how long until Ollie Peake is in the test side. Kid is just made for test match cricket

A fair bit away. Probably 2027 maybe 2028. Not many spots in that middle order until then- let’s be real Lab, Smith (won’t retire till then), Head and Green are pretty set.

Really rate Dixon though he might get one earlier

Can see a world where Peake sneaks in an early test or two, injury maybe, tour mishap overseas possibly etc

Smith is 35, his time is coming to and end one would think. Head moving to the top of the order at 31 is an interesting decision, especially with Kostas, Kellaway, Dixon amongst a raft of u23 openers pressing for claims down the track to open for Australia

He's averaging 27 after 9 first class matches. Can everyone just calm down and just let the kids play a bit of shield before we start anointing them as the next big thing.

Matt Renshaw averaged 45 in First Class cricket at a similar age after a similar amount of matches and that's not panned out as we thought.

Guys like McSweeney and Clayton doing more than Peake to be potential short to long term middle order options if needed if they keep playing as they are without needing to throw a kid in prematurely.

Dixon is averaging 20 and has already been dropped by the Vics in favour of Sam Harper opening of all people. He's not pressing for anything yet. Some bizarre thinking in this thread. This thread is what I imagine it felt like to be in a room with Greg Chappell selecting his National Performance Team squads

Sam Harper has the second most runs of any keeper so far this season... Which is pretty sad in itself.

Indeed, keepers not going well. A few promising ones stuck behind others at their states. I like Curtis but obviously will struggle to get games unless Inglis is unavailable. Hicks looks very promising and has piled on runs for the 2's but has no chance to actually keep for NSW while Philippe is there. Wonder if he has considered switching states. I love Jimmy P but his horrid season so far has started to make me wonder, luckily for him we have no keeper's performing with the bat in premier cricket, and the youngish keeper bat I rated the most is now in Victoria playing for St Kilda. We keep producing brilliant gloveman at under-age levels like Lachy Aitken, Toby and Isaiah Snell, Dylan Mclachlan etc but they never seem to kick on and figure out the whole batting side of things.

He must have done something really wrong not to even make the team. Memory might be wrong, but I thought he was going alright by the end of the last shield season, and he's just kicked things off right where he left them this season

The number I gave there was from when he was 19 or 20 and first picked to play test cricket for Australia, nothing to do with the present. I was using it as an example as to why people in this thread shouldn't be lording Ollie Peake as a guarantee to play test cricket when he averages far less than Renshaw did at the same age. Renshaw was also far from the "prodigy" that the Victorian media have been trying to hype Peake up as for years.

Sorry lol - I didn't mean to highlight the entire section, sleep is getting the better of me. I lost track of which thread this was in; I thought it was the second test one, and thus made the comment that Renshaw deserves to be in the squad for the second test.

Haha all good mate, lack of sleep gets the better of us all. Go get some some shut eye.

Peirson's drop off has been remarkable. He's been the most consistent with the bat for a while now.

Doran could end up as a test keeper post Inglis

Big Kellaway fan.
Also haven't lost hope in McSweeney yet either. He was done real dirty last year. Would love to know how his first attempt at test cricket would have turned out in an alternate reality where he plays at 3 instead of opening against India.

The other one who I'd like to see continue making runs and putting his name in the conversation is Tim Ward. Has returned to a little bit of form recently. Still only 27 as well, so from an individual perspective he has a really important 2-3 years coming up to make himself undeniable.

Remember the days when junior batsmen started at 6 (outside of openers) and then moved up the order over time and the senior players moved up the order to take on more responsibility.

im not sure if you've seen the premise of this thread pal, maybe read the room before taking passive aggressive comments like these

For what it's worth, he's arguably one of the youngest highly touted young bats in the country imho. Absolutely worth discussing his form and potential. No one is saying he should be selected

The under 19 national championships started today. Scorecards are here

Happy to see Hogan in the runs again, he is coming along nicely. Same for Lee-Young, as only him and Peake scored any runs in the youth tour of India last year. Here are the names I went looking for:

Steven Hogan: 92(111)

Alexander Lee-Young 90(111)

Simon Budge 10(23)

Lincoln Hobbs 2(5)

Any one else you guys are keeping an eye on?
