I would encourage all of you to watch the post game presser with Starcevich. What a great man he is. Explains exactly why North are so good and is completely honest about where they sit in relation to North. At one point one of the journos asks him if the margin reflected the difference between the two teams and he said "Yeah, that was about right" (paraphrasing).
Of course, the headline you responded to was taken completely out of context. He spoke beautifully.
No dramas with his presser at all.
However l stand by each point l raised as they are absolutely valid, from the lead up to the game, to watching the game now three times.

Over did it with the fake push in back each time....obviously a team directive (lost count how many times this happened…including the one that led to the biggest brain snap of the game)
Outplayed ( absolutely smashed in uncontested possessions, wasted huge amount of fwd entries ect)
Outmatched ( absolutely failed to make changes ….continued to make minimal adjustments when the heat was applied…left to the few. Dawes and who else )
Out muscled ( their playbook of bully and bash no longer stands up …that’s 5 thumpings and continues to play the same way. That’s a coach who hasn’t adapted to challenge)
Out scored ( second biggest losing margin in a gf )
Out dated fwd line ...has anyone seen Dakota…( absolutely went missing, along with you could argue their entire fwd line….credit to our backline )
Out of excuses....we're the underdogs...going into 7th grand final ( point made on AFLW wrap up…the ledger suggests you get to gf …but your systems not very good. 2 wins 5 losses)
Out of ideas...argued with every umpire call ( watch each call that goes our way in a contest and you’ll see most of their players argue ..raise arms at the officials )

As for taking the headline out of context "There were some monumental sort of blunders there along the way."
Nope….the above points are my opinions, and pair up perfectly with that statement taken from the article , which l also do believe he said would haunt Quite a few of them.
Yes his a straight shooter…. But the continued plan of particularly the first point l raised, throw in the knees in the back, front on contact with no intention to go for the ball, sliding in as the second tackler ( twice on Karney who remonstrated with the officials ) l could go on ..heck all the points l raised is a reflection on his game plan and coaching acumen. 5 times he’s persisted with pre gf 2024 game plan…and as Kate Mac said 5 times they have now been absolutely mauled. Nice guy but his game plan as l said above simply doesn’t stand up….particularly when playing a system like ours.

This team will be hard to beat next year, have Mia king, Bresnehan to come back in, and also I think an Irish girl who took this year off ( I think). Probably only lose Shierlaw, am assuming given her age. Going to be stacked again.
Go Roos
And possible new recruits…as karns said our system and success is a pretty attractive draw card.

Pointless stat time.

This is the overall record (regular season and finals) of every club over the first 10 seasons of the AFLW. I've ranked the teams by points which is a little irrelevant because you don't get 4pts for a finals win, but I don't care.

Despite not playing in the first two seasons, we are 4th most successful team in terms of points and wins, but we are clearly the best team in terms of win percentage, we are more than 5% better than the next best, Melbourne.

We also have the best percentage which is a whopping 192.93% and nearly 40% better than the next best, Adelaide.

In the last two seasons:
  • We have gone from 16 wins behind Adelaide (57-41) to only 5.
  • We have gone from 15 wins behind Melbourne (56-41) to only 3.
  • We have gone from 13 wins behind Brisbane (54-41) to only 7.

The fact that only 6 teams have a win percentage over 50% and 5 have a percentage over 100% is a little disappointing, but hopefully the improvement by a few teams in 2025 is a positive sign for the coming seasons.
Awesome analysis. There is a clear 'big four' in the AFLW and it's completely different to the traditional big four of the AFL. Refreshing.

It was clear that they came into the game extremely fired up and ready to bring manic pressure, but they should've seen from what our girls did to Hawthorn that not only is that not enough, it's actually going to backfire on you. North can do it for longer and they're composed when you aren't. Brisbane looked totally panicked and out of sorts every time they had an opportunity. Like, just look at this:

I was at the game so I didn't see this live, but jeez I've never seen anything like this, it makes me genuinely worry for Belle Dawes' wellbeing. She looked like she was having a panic attack. Is this how "fired up" they all were? It seemed like it with the way they were carrying on, getting insanely frustrated at every little thing that didn't go their way and seemingly trying to hurt their opponents. Not only is it not sustainable but of course you can't dob a bullet to a leading forward or take a regulation chest mark if you're in a manic state like this. It's the coach's job to make sure players don't get into this kind of state, or they're going to make "monumental blunders".

Slipknot has won a Grammy and they have(had?) a campaigner that literally plays a bin…

Incredible live show. Worth getting along to one even if you don't like their music.

Also, it's generally beer kegs ;)

FREE - the most powerful word in the English language. Eddie Maguire reading Shakespeare would fill Fed Square if it was free. Worked in the media long enough to know when you say it is free people will literally knock each over to get to you.
Maybe your people would flock to that, not mine. We take the warning and avoid the city. If trapped, riot.

I reckon we just get the 1 new recruit like we’ve been doing last few years

KLWT to come in along with 2 draftees
Just making room for the minimum incoming will mean tough luck for someone, unless we get space from retirements or players asking for trades to get more opportunity.

Dawes had just been wound up by Kearney. Kearney has a wonderful understanding of the psychology of sport - you can see in her smile that she knew she was disabling Dawes with anger using a few well placed words. No physical contact required.

I’ve got wright and Shierlaw retiring plus stubs delisted

Need one more change after that (initially that was going to be Kearney but sounds like she goes one final year)

Was that at half time? Only found the footage last night of Kearney sarcastically clapping at Davidson after her ludicrous “shot” after the siren from near half way and Dawes come flying at her.

Also didn’t see at the game, but saw on the replay, Kearney get up grinning after Davidson stepped on her calf getting up after an early tackle.

This game should have 100% been at Marvel. Hopefully moving forward this happens. If they just opened level 1 , what would it hold? 20k? It seems a no brainer to me.
Unlike the mens comp, it isn't be a confirmed booking as a Melbourne team has to be the home team. So Marvel can be used for other events without a confirmed booking and may not always be available.

Surprised Dakota Dickhead didn't pull anyone's hair

Could anyone tell me if the criteria used to measure the " pressure index " is the same for AFL and AFLW ?
tl;dr Yes, and it’s generally a bit higher in the W because the style of play is more congested/contested overall.

Longer - there are different types of pressure, from none when you have uncontested use of the ball after a mark or free, through corralling, chasing, closing, directing physical pressure and an actual effective tackle, and they give all those numerical values. The pressure index is the average pressure a given team’s disposals have been under over the last x amount of time (I think it’s 5 minutes), with a fixed multiplier to make it come out around a couple of hundred instead of needing decimal places.

I was at the ground too, so didn't see this, and you're bang on, no-one can perform when they're wound up like that. I suspect Belle is a bit like that at the best of times, but this is next level

Emma as cool as a cucumber, grinning away, Dawes was completely flapped. She’s a GOAT, is Emma

Sorry Samsquanch, quoted you accidentally!

'S'OK... I mentioned how hyped Dawes was on the night. Emma had her wound up like a spring. As a result she was overcooking and causing errors, and she probably wasted as much energy over the half time break as she would have playing a quarter.

I think you can see it on the full replay - Dakota takes here kick and there's some argy-bargy between Dawes and Wall, and Kearney is there with a big arse grin winding Dawes up.

Yep, there it is. 42:00 on the clock. I believe you can see Dawes mouth something along the lines of "you cucking funk" and getting up in Kearney's face, and you can see in Kearney's eyes "we're home".

Your best players and biggest leaders have to be in control of their emotions when the pressure is on. That way they can turn the dial up or down as appropriate to help their team. Jas & Emma have that calculating presence and know what to do and when to do it to set the tone. Bella & Dakota are younger and don’t yet have themselves centred like that. If they ever develop that level of emotional control both they and their team will take a serious step up.
