Actually to be honest, I reckon I probably am a bit of a happy clapper if truth be told.

Jackson Hately and the story was Jason McCartney was busy with other trades so it didn't get done before the deadline. Thankfully.

Dawson wasn't anywhere near the same but Sydney perceived it that there was the threat not that we even threatened it.

Given we attempted to trade all our firsts to Roos for pick 1, Sydney would have to have been pretty stupid to not see the writing on the wall.

That’s the one that I heard and thought he was complementary towards Nicks.
I was also left with the feeling after listening that his main motivation may have been contract length and security .
Good luck to him and us as we were in a position to get a fine player.

He’ll be a nice player for us, but people are dreaming if they don’t think the contract bump and extra years weren’t major factors.

Nah you're right they played well, 'deserving games' is a bit rich but Edwards probably should have got a game instead of Smith, no disagreements here. It's just you're talking about the 24th and 25th best players as if they would have made a difference, which is hardly an argument on the Sack Nicks side of things, or whatever point you're looking to make.

And it's a lame straw man argument to come up with a moniker so you can roll it out if anyone disagrees with you, come on man, 'apologist', really do you not have a coherent argument?? 🤣

If the 24th and 25th player isn’t going to make a difference, aren’t you better off using the opportunity to try and develop players that will? Posters have been saying the same thing for years and years. It does make a difference, we deliberately limit our ceiling by reverting to the Smiths and Murphys when we should be getting a look at a kid that might develop into something better.

Probably so long as he wasn't Mark Neeld-esque then it didn't matter.

Even Mark Neeld attracted inward trades. No matter how bad a coach is, players still go there if the other aspects work for them. The coach is largely irrelevant when your contract is being increased by 70% and you’re desperate for the location. And as much as he may have waffled on about Davis, had he gone to a Vic club, Ah Chee would still be in Adelaide.

You dont think Port offered Ah Chee a contract?

Yeh, but with trying to keep Butters, still get NWM and having overpaid for missing pieces, I doubt they’d offered up as much as us. Plus we just finished top and Ah Chee likes playing finals. Reality is if Carr or Kern were on the end of the phone as AFC senior coach, he’d still be a Crow as we speak.

Don't think I wanted or agreed with the selection decisions, that's not my view, but we got flogged in those games, it was a whole of team failure, from players to coaching preparation and to game day coaching.

My point is the debate on the 24th and 25th best players in a team is a distraction from the real problem, it's an oversimplification of the events, and is a lazy argument to sack Nicks.

We know the selectors picked the team to win, not to develop, that has always been the approach of most coaches in the AFL - I think perhaps Sam Mitchell is the one who did it best though, he delisted the players he didn't want (Titchell/ O'Meara) so he could play the midfield he wanted, took the short term pain but was really clear with his plan, and bounced back hard.

Personally I've not ever advocated for Murphy in the team and haven't for Smith in the Nicks era - so yes I agree we should have developed young talent into those roles.
