Yes, and it's an extremely stupid consideration. Just another irrational quirk of an often silly sport.

Your actual job is to win the series, not have a draw. The history books really don't care about 'retention', great teams are defined by wins.

It's a pretty logical concept, if you want to get the trophy back you have to win it back. If you can't do that, it stays with the holder.

This series means a lot to Smith. We was pumped after hitting the winning runs in Perth and he was animated all day today.

Part of me thinks this is partly about redemption and legacy (although he has already done that in my eyes on both counts). He has captained the side to a 2-0 lead in the Ashes. If we end up winning the series - he is a big part of that and probably jointly collects the trophy with Cummins in Sydney
