first time golf thread poster.. had a boys weekend and we played a casual round of golf, good time had by all. Looking to book another weekend. Looking for good public access courses around the Bass Coast of Vic, so far have narrowed it down to
  • Phillip Island
  • Leongatha
  • Wonthaggi.

other suggestions would be welcome

Wonthaggi?

Definitely would play Lang Lang on the way down.

I played a bunch of Mornington peninsula courses last year and they were all fantastic. Really quite spoilt to have so many world class courses all relatively close and not overly expensive.
Loved the North Course at Rosebud, but St.Andrews Beach was the pick for me.
Had no idea it was a Doak course until I heard him talking about the construction process on the Fried Egg a couple of weeks ago.
My home course here in Canada just hired Angela Moser as the architect, who has worked for Doak/Renaissance for a long time and was the lead on Pinehurst No.10, so that’s pretty exciting.

My previous home course was a Walter J Travis designed course who I found out despite only designing courses in America & Canada was actually an Australian who moved to North America in the 1920s at 23 I think.

Folks, help a new golfer out;

If I wanted to come up with a wish-list of 10 Victorian golf courses to play, what courses have to go on that list?

Caveat: it has to be realistic/achievable. Whilst I would love to play Royal Melb or PK, afaik you have to know a member and at this stage I just don't. So any suggestions should be at least conceivably accessible to me as a "public" golfer. ;)

Fascinated to see what people suggest! Thanks in advance folks.

The dunes
St Andrews beach
Lonsdale links
Moonah links legends
Moonah links open I guess
13th beach x2
Portsea

Thanks lads. Great start.

Any tips/tricks I might need to know about trying to get tee times at those courses over the next year or so? Anything I should know?

Here's 10 Chad.

Barwon Heads (go to their website - certain days available for play)
Thirteenth Beach (Beach)
Curlewis
Lonsdale Links
Port Fairy
St Andrews Beach
The Dunes
Portsea
Moonah Links Legends
Rosebud North

Make sure you play 13B on a day when the visitor course is the Beach and likewise at Rosebud.

All terrific. You will find some of them pretty tough at your current handicap level but just enjoy the experience.

If you go to play at The Dunes.....do not under any circumstances, put your name down on the 1st Tues of each month.
You'll end up playing in The Tombstone Challenge off the blacks and probably never want to play golf again.

I do, but i'm an idiot.
