5-10? then why would anyone invest in academies?

Core issue is that AFL isnt taking on responsibility for full development and pathways across Australia. it's left to clubs via NGAs or academies. you de-incentivise clubs, it means less players coming through and game is poorer for it.
Yep in my opinion, afl should be taking over all the academies

Talk of moving on Gross is ridiculous. His first AFL game was very impressive and his WAFL form was too. He's definitely a long term player, just needs to get his body accustomed to the demands of the AFL
Gross was really impressive early on at both AFL and WAFL, but his weaknesses, tunnel vision, lack of awareness and general spudness (who flies in to their captain with an elbow in an intra club???) has shown through big time.

If he doesn't make it, it will be because he just seems to lack any kind of football nous, or just a general sense of football smarts.

Based off an interview with Shuey last year it seems he's being played to instruction(minus concussing his teammates).

Been told to take the game on. Shuey showed him highlights of himself being run down in tackles early days of his career after the Richmond game.

Didn't even have to be early in Shuey's career.

Was run down in the 2018 Qualifying Final by Varcoe. Two games later he's Norm.

There is taking the game on, then there is being completely oblivious to almost everything around you.

Gross seems more the latter to me.

Whilst I reckon Ginbey plays better lockdown whether that’s 3rd or as an undersized KPD, I’m not sure recruiting Broad is the answer. Nothing against him, but we don’t really need him and even still we recruited a younger Broad this year in Starcevich.

Chase a Ruck, mid, small forward from another club but for KPD go the draft route.
Well yeah go the draft, id still take 2 kpds one from the draft with a decent pick and maybe 1 more with a rookie or msd or something

We dont really have the tall depth in general especially if we lose Edwards, plus our tall forward depth is 0 if we lose BWilliams and JWilliams, plus Barnett I assume is out the door
Bazzo hasnt shown anythinf, and Brock/Young arent really great, theyre role players at best.

Broad is just a 1 year stop gap depth at best

Would make out kpd depth Ginbey, Brock, Young, Bazzo? maybe, with Broad as a 3rd tall and then 2 kids

He would cost **** all too

Hes an experienced defender, he could cover the wafl idc and be emergency depth

Next year will be Archer’s 4th on the list, and he’ll obviously play part-time ruck this year.

Surely as a 4th year player he’ll be physically able to carry a lot of the ruck role? May not be a world beater initially but an upgrade on Flynn.

Then we can potentially draft another development ruck and keep Flynn as our WAFL backup.

All this assuming BW leaves of course
I assume based on what we have seen so far that Archer is the intended ruck/fwd option long term, with CDT to be our actual ruckman.
I dont see at this stage Archer being put into a role as our main ruck

Question - would either or both of Zane Duursma or Zack Reid be worth pursuing?

Cant see a world where playing with your brother (Xavier) at Ess would be a more appealing option than playing with ur brother (Willem) at WC. One team is heading northwards - the other not all all. Can Zane play & is he worth asking the question?

Similarly - given the question marks around our key defensive posts - Is Zack Reid a useful option to trade for?

Then there is the question - does trading in these boys help to keep the younger brothers and do we want to keep Archer and Willem?

Zach Reid yes. Hes not a full back stopper but imo hes better than all our other KPDs as that 2nd or 3rd tall.

ZDuursma meh, need to see more.
We have enough marking options in our forward line, need smalls and pressure players to balance it out not a 190cm marking player imo.

Not sure where this article really belongs but given Haselby acknowledges Shanahan, AReid and CDT as being potentially the best group of key forwards in the competition by 2028 I figured this may be the place.

Haselby questions the need to chase GCS Walter on the back of his comments regarding our three key forwards. Also points out (blindingly obvious) the need for KPD.

It's a decent article and actually realises what WC have got.
The bit he also gets right IMO is Walter has not set the world on fire and the cost is the critical piece to getting him in the door.
But, 1 of A Reid/CDT will be a full time ruck in a couple of years and not resting forward while the other will be a fwd/ruck IMO.
CDT is very unique and very NN in his abilities, so it's up to 1 of them to take the position.

Walter is a late 1st/early 2nd cost KPF who has the athletic ability superior to any other KPF in the comp and would be an almost exact replica of what Waterman has played most of his career with his roaming up the ground and working back into the fwd line.
Post Waterman he would be a great get but he is available now and is superior to JW so you trade up if you can.

I still think the eaglevision plan he stated earlier is give GC a package for Walter & Rogers who are both OOC and solve 2 parts of our list build in a replacement for Waterman longer term and upgrade on JW and a SF of high quality in J Rogers.
They can have several years of 2nd round picks at their disposal, 2026 2nd, F2, FF2.

Get walter for cheap
Shanahan to be our chb- yes he looks like being a great kpf too but we need a chb more, and if we get Walter we dont need shanahan up forward too

Would be a waste for me. We know how good Shanahan can be forward.

Plus if he's not playing where he wants then expect Vic teams looking for a KPF to throw some serious money his way.

I'd like Walter but I don't think the timing is right. He'd be perfect in about 3 years when Waterman starts to slow down

We know Shanahan could be gov 2.0 too

We need KPD more right now, we have a kid who seems similarly good at both ends

Makes more sense to put him back especially if a former pick 2 couldve been pick 1 KPF becomes available for cheap

Its not going to be Archer going back, imo people are dreaming suggesting that

What do we do with Pick 18 and which rookies do we cut when the AFL take our concessions away?
Surely if we miss finals we keep them 1 more year, and get told that 2027 is the last year. Maybe they reduce it to 2 spots only.

Too much to take them all away straight up imo unless we repeat 2011

Nah he's a talent who plays on the edge and still figuring what you can and can't get away with at AFL level

Still have us winning 4 games, maybe 5 tops as it's a long year and the kids will run out of puff.
That's a far cry from the 2-4 I was realistically hoping for and way more competitive than I was hoping for in round 3.

Still makes us bottom 3 IMO with a far more competitive team and better %.
Don't stuff it up WC and draft/trade mids and KPD's while we are down here.

I can see us bouncing fairly quickly come 2028 if we get this rebuild right.

We are still getting smashed in transition with some of our troops and we are going to lose a few fairly quickly with Yeo/Cripps/Kelly and let's throw everything we have into this draft and trade period and gets almost all the parts to grow.

One of Arki Butler, Kodah Edwards, Noah Williams with our first pick, in that order of priority

2027 1st for Walter + Rogers (Walter you take on talent if he wants to come HERE, Rogers as the small forward we need. Murdock if continues this trajectory, Rogers, Newton (maybe) and our NGA boys coming through, smalls looks pretty healthy)

Our top 5 pick bid bull shit compo (that im not complaining about) which will be 20-24 on best available KPD, Tate Hodgson or Xavier Ladbrook potentially

Trade our 2R for a later 2026 R2 pick or early R3, and something in 2027. Or both for later 2026 R2 picks, regardless, goal of this is to be able to match Kenh bid (20-35 range id assume)

Take Harper Banfield, McGlade, Farmer or whoever else of our club tied prospects make themselves draftable over the year.

Looking good if it works out this way

With Murdoch, Newton. Champion, Cripps (maybe), + rotations next yr and beyond - why would WC need Rogers?
