I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Harley has earnt the right to lead the club next year.

That's right, call me Mr Contraversy but that's how I feel.

As for the ideal captain I wouldn't mind Big Johnno Brown.

Out of what we have available Ling, Chappy, Moons or Scarlo would all be considered as candidates to take over the reigns when required.

Will it still be Harley?
Or does it change to somebody else?

Ridiculous suggestion!!! Of course it will be Harley!!!

In fact, I would think that Tom will be captain for a few years yet.

......unless he does his knee pre-season and then quits the club at the end of next year and signs up with the Kangaroos where he plays out the rest of his career as a fairly ordinary player.....but I doubt that will happen.

It doesn't just change for the sake of it, Harley will be Captain until the team and himself decide to make a change.

If it was on a yearly basis, why the hell did we have King for so long when he was injured year in year out.

Ridiculous suggestion!!! Of course it will be Harley!!!

There are a lot of people on bigfooty that are either teens with no clue or even younger who are just learning man, dont be too harsh. :thumbsu:

GFCats07, who do you think should be captain next year? Has Harley done anything to suggest he should not be retained as captain?

..

And who would be your ideal captain of the Geelong Football Club?

Agree with Catfanatic, wasn't having a go, just I cannot see Harley moving on. It will be his choice of standing down, or being pushed by the board.

However his ability to openly talk to the media was fantastic during the year. He is extremely media savvy and very well liked by them for that.

Also, I'm sure everyone knows about this, but his leadership after the Roos first final was unreal. He called everyone into the huddle after the final siren, no fanfare, just looked everyone in their eye's and said it isn't over. There was still more to be done.

The last point I'd make on this subject is that when the talk was raised about the salary cap and the struggles the Cats will have, he looked straight into the camera and said he'd take a pay cut for the team.

That is leadership.

Bolded. I much prefer having Harley speak for the team than some of our "yeah nah" types. Also Harley is one of the most self-disciplined footballers Geelong has ever had, so his influence on the side and especially the younger players is invaluable. Not to mention that he is universally respected by the senior players as well. Colbert left because (among other reasons) he felt he was being usurped by his peers. No chance of that with Harley. The captain doesn't necessarily need to be your marquee player.

I rate Tom Harley very highly. Remember when he was on the footyshow? He never once resorted to the unintelligent toilet humour that a lot seem to get carried away with on that show. The whole time, he portrayed himself as
a true leader. Crawford's antics on that show are why he will never be seen as a true leader at Hawthorn. Although someone mentioned Jonathan Brown before, although he is a good player and leads by example on the field, he too lowers himself at times on the footyshow, and I would not consider him the greatest of leaders of men.

In response to the initial post, I believe Harley will be captain until the day he retires. It's not often that Geelong is sitting on a premiership captain. They wont be desparate to push him out the door. As someone else mentioned, Selwood looks to be a good replacement, and I believe the club will groom him for the position over the next 4-5 seasons. I don't see him taking over as captain at least until he is 22-23 though, and if Harley departs early I'd like to see Chapman or Scarlett as captain.

Harley 2008
Harley 2009
Harley 2010
(If Injuries havn't got to him.. If so, Chapman as a fill-in captain before Selwood)
Chapman 2011
Chapman 2012

Selwood 2013 and beyond if his leadership qualities that I keep hearing about reach their potential.

Obviously looking ahead a fair bit, but I think it will turn out something like that.

If Gary stays consistent and injury free over the next 3 or so years, it's hard to see how he wouldn't be considered. (particularly before Selwood)

I'd have to agree with that one completely.
The only slight potential is Gaz Jr getting a go in there somewhere. I think Chappy is better suited, but it wouldn't surprise me if they wanted to get Gaz into it at some stage.

Agree with this totally. Chappy next captain, Selwood to follow.

Provided he stays injury free Harley will stay captain for the next couple of years.
After that we should be looking at someone about 25-27 yrs old who really wants it,ala Harley.

The ones that come to mind are Chapman and Ling. Ablett and Bartel may not be suited to the public exposure that comes with the job.

Ottens, Scarlett and Mooney will be close to the end of the careers and Rooke a bit too country.
One from left field is Mackie, seems well spoken not afraid of the media and quite passionate about the club. Will have matured considerably by then.

Harls has done more then enough to secure his job.

I do believe that Ablett jnr shouldn't be discounted in a year or two if he is still performing at the level of 07.

Chappy would be the next obvious choice but I just don't think that the inspiration that Gaz generates on the field cannot be underestimated.

I also like the way he was giving instructions to blokes like Moons this year. Shows he has come on as a player and a leader.

Jnr? Don't think so. Doesn't matter how good you are on the field.. You need good communication skills within the club (Harley) and we all know Chapman does this very well (many public articles).

I would love to see Jnr captain the GFC at some stage as he leads by example on the field, but I do not think he has shown enough off the field as of yet.

I think that's exactly the point. If and when he does become captain, it will be in at least 2 to 3 years time. By which stage you would imagine he would have matured a great deal.

Does anyone think that Djekurra is any chance of a leadership role? I remember reading an article about how his family were Aboriginal leaders of some sort.

Lol, yes I remember. Doubt he'll make another appearance on that show! He carried himself as well as he could, considering the circumstances.

As for the captaincy next year, for sure Harley should stay. Agree with you there on Chapman, but not sure about Scarlett. If Mooney continues his form (and avoiding trouble) I think he should get it.

ofocurse he will be.... ling, ablett, bartel are contenders after 2008 but Harley has deserved this now.

Yeah, Djerrkura has been mentioned before. His father was chaiman of ASIC
before he died and since then Nathan has obviously needed to take more of a leading role within his family. He is well educated (studied at Scotch) and has a wider view of life than many. From that aspect he ticks alo of boxes. However until he starts performing on the field (and he should), then talk of captaincy is a moot point.
