Id say there has always been players who hold less value in the eyes of the public but are afforded plenty of credit in house for tasks assigned. Not sure how he went but its not unusual to see that type of player go well at the B&F

Most of Geelong's list have had front row seats to Tom Atkins' ball-winning ability as VFL captain and now he's pushing hard for an AFL debut. Added as a rookie in November, the 23-year-old has done everything asked of him in long sessions this pre-season and presents as a smokey for a round one debut. While much of his recent form has been as an inside midfielder, he provides a small forward option with his tackling and competitiveness. YES... This absolutely does my head in. I remember Scooter going in for surgery in the week leading up to round 1 last year. Im like, WTF!!!!!... do that shit as soon as the season finishes, not as the next one is about to start.

It's not the 90's where everyone is 1 on 1, it's a team game.

I'd expect a dime a dozen small defender to be able to hit a target and do more than just lockdown on 1player.

It's fine to get 10 possessions but he better create something from those 10 possessions.

As noted above, that is not what they are rating. Selwood and Stewart are rated against their peers in their position, not against their own team mates in other positions. Also, they use two years worth of data, so Stewart is brought down by his good but not great first year.

That still makes absolutely no sense so they can stuff their justifications!! Even if you somehow accept that Stewart was only average as a medium defender in his first year you could make a strong argument that he was the best player in his position in the entire competition. That being the case how does the two years of data have him sitting at average. Ridiculous and stupid and frankly not justifiable anyway you slice it!!

Apart from the fact that you need small defenders to play alongside talls, the three mentioned as having poor disposal actually do not.
Blicavs: 82.09 DE, second best in 2018; Kolo: 78.59, 7th best; and Henry: 71.61.
I'm not a huge fan of statistics, but my own observation that they have quite good disposal is actually backed up in this case.
Even Bews himself has a DE of over 75%.

Do you wonder why in big finals when the opposition amps up the pressure we cant get it out of defence? it's because no one can hit a high risk target under pressure. Chip scab options dry up and they kick it to the boundary line every time and sometimes they shank it out on the full.

Most of our defence would be great at kick to kick at the park not so great when it comes to hitting difficult targets quickly under pressure.

I haven't seen the actual list, so I can't be sure, but the AFL ratings list him as a key defender. If CD also have him as a key defender it could explain it. The AFL has him the 21st best key defender, which I think would be about average. The CD and AFL rating systems are similar.

If you are asking why they are rating him against key defenders instead of small/medium defenders, I don't know. That appears to be the flaw in their rating of Stewart, not necessarily their method.

Now Chris Scott ( who i think has done a good job - deserves alot of credit for the 11 flag etc ) the knock on him - is he wont try things - when they need to be tried - alah especially after a bye - and 1st qtrs of finals ( where the game is over at qtr time )

Blight would not put up with that ( cant do any worse ) and he may start Bews on the ball - because he is quick and strong

But Scott will just go with the status quo - and guess what ( after the bye and 1st final ) - the games over at qtr time- and that infuriates most supporters

Why would stats back something I said. Stats simplify things,if you are going to give a simple answer there are probably stats for it.

You can't measure complex things like decision making and difficulty of kick with stats.

Lonergan played within himself because his job was to be a tall defender. His kicking didnt matter because quality 197cm defenders are rare and he had other guys around him who could kick.

If you have 1 or 2 chip scabs in defence then it's not a big deal, when you have 4+ then you have problems when the pressure goes up.

I don't think medium defender exists in the CD rankings, you're either a key defender or a general defender.

You obviously present it as some kind of criticism.
If you are referring to possessions that don't go to an opposition player, then I'm struggling to see how it is a negative.
Especially since the obvious alternative would be rushing the ball forward to a 50/50 or worse.
