Sure you can.

It's not the 90's where everyone is 1 on 1, it's a team game.

I'd expect a dime a dozen small defender to be able to hit a target and do more than just lockdown on 1player.

It's fine to get 10 possessions but he better create something from those 10 possessions.

I don't see a better small defender on the geelong list currently. Honestly he does not need to rack up the possessions that's 2e and Stewart's job.

Henry will float across the pack in the air, kolo should also be a lockdown defender and Henderson should do a bit of both sag off with Taylor and defend.

Bews job is to defend the most dangerous small forward you don't want him kicking it 15 times.

Someone needs to block and shepperd and chase niggle.

Glad I was sitting down when I flicked through my copy of the AFL Prospectus which arrived today. Player ratings for our list according to Champion Data:

Elite: Dangerfield, Menegola, Hawkins.

Can understand Danger and Hawkins. Don't know about Menegola though.

Above Average: Henderson, Blicavs, Kelly, Taylor, Duncan, Tuohy, Ablett, Smith.

Henderson? Taylor? Smith? Surely they're extracting the urine.

Average: Parfitt, Henry, Stanley, J.Selwood, Stewart, Dahlhaus, Rohan.

Selwood and Stewart only rated average? Pisser. Surely Stanley should be rated higher than Smith too.

Below Average: Fogarty, C.Guthrie, Kolodjashnij, Parsons, Cunico, S.Selwood, Bews, Cockatoo.

Poor: Z.Guthrie

Unclassified (less than 10 games in last 2 years) : Narkle, Ratugolea, O'Connor, Jones, Abbott, Fort, Atkins, Buzza, Simpson, Okunbor, Miers, Constable, Kreuger, Brownless, Tarca, Kennerley, Jarvis, Schlensog, Clark.

Yeah it's the stupid system where they categorize players in the 10% bracket. So some pools are much deeper than others menegola would be in that mid forward pool which is shallow.

To be a realist though Smith, Taylor, Henderson being above average compared to selwood, Henderson ( AA ) and even parfitt is just taking the piss champion data do it all the time. Because they can!!

I like Bews and definitely think he should be part of the team. My only issue is that we have the mix wrong down there. If we have four talls/almost talls then we end up with only Touhy as a proper running rebound defender and that is not good enough these days.

Forget Rohan, O'Connor is looking like a beast!

Damn O'Conner for not sitting in a bar on Bali working on a sun tan and sipping big drinks with little umbrellas in them for the off season.Should have been delisted for setting a bad example.

O'Connor and Rohan could be great defensive options both run well and have intercept height and size.
O'Connor needs a breakout year and Rohan needs a spot in the team.
Wouldn't mind seeing both used in defence in the JLT games.

I'm a big kolo fan have been for a long time it's time for him to be played as the 2nd key defender. Or locking down the most dangerous mid sized forward he has been around long enough needs to deliver this season become one of our best defenders.

He came of injury last season just looked like he did not have his legs under him then got played out of position on the wing. So hopefully full pre season he will be cherry ripe round 1.

Bews is more important to the geelong best 22 over Guthrie from my perspective.

What injury? He had a full pre-season heading into last year and didn't miss a game throughout the season.

His form in the first half of the year was pretty good, but it fell away drastically in the 2nd half. IMO had a lot to do with the return of Henderson and to a lesser extent Taylor.

Agree with you on Bews.

i think he had glandular fever over the off season

Nobody likes the 4 talls been happening for years. Stewart's was an all australian half back. Duncan plays from half back so with 2e plenty of ball carrying options. Henry even Henderson gives you run and rebound. Think a lot tip Taylor to not play a whole lot of games

I don't see too many live games but I don't recall Duncan lining up at half back much last year. Let's hope you are right in general though about the back six set up. Not sure how it will work though because I think HT might just be in for one more ripping year!

Yeah I think Ray has his years jumbled...
I think Kolo was playing the best footy he has at the club early last year when handling the responsibility of playing KPD, he dropped off when they shoehorned Hendo and Taylor back into the team unnecessarily

Agreed think I was thinking 2017 pre season losing track getting old. He stepped into the Mackie role and tanked on the wing.

Cam Guthrie and Kolo have shown they're very good shutdown small defenders before. If we've got guys like Henderson and Taylor back then sending Kolo to a small is a real option. The other obvious option is O'Connor who showed plenty at the end of the year as a small defender. His reading of the ball in the air, reach, balance and disposal mean he has all the attributes to be elite whereas Bews doesn't have anything like the same ceiling.

Kolo has neither the pace nous nor the turning circle to play on good small forwards he's a KPD or he's nothing.
I have called for Guthrie as a shutdown small defender for years but the coaches seem reluctant to do it.

I like O'Connors potential and I agree although you have kind of backed up my point-he isn't currently better than Bews (although he projects to be) and until he is Bews wont be dropped which was my point-he has his limitations but is currently the best small stopper we can put out there.

Sorry but this is nonsense. Still the best game of his career was against Freo in Perth a few years back when Walters was on fire early and looked like he'd destroy us. Kolo was put on him late in the first and shut him out of the game completely.

But Kolo can play other roles and has done good jobs as a key defender and had good games further up the ground too. But he can definitely play well on smalls as he did for much of his early career.

Something else to think on for those who think Bews is a lock. In the last 2 years (since Enright retired) Bews has missed 8 games. In those 8 games we've won 7 and lost 1 and only 1 small forward has kicked more than 2 goals in a game (Minchington with 3). That included Betts and Bruest in AA seasons being well held.

Right now he'd be in my team but the idea he's the only guy who can shutdown small forwards or we really struggle against those opponents without him is clearly garbage from looking at our performances without him.

What's garbage is people still assuming Bews isn't a quality defender and a lock in our side.

Supercoachitis I think it is called.
Where defending if overlooked for meters gained

I don't disagree with much you have to say but Guthrie should be on the same side of the fence as me,he hates the sight of blood especially his own, doesn't go hard enough,Prefer to look at others.

Duncan often started on the wing or centre, but his heat maps showed that he played mostly across half back, save for 6 or so games he played further up the field.

I'm not sure I like him there, though. He is a good kick on the run, and I would like him feeding our forwards more often. Wing if not in the guts for me.

Has anyone had a look at preseason training this week or are all back at work?
Would love someone to post a training report.

We have the worst Media department in the AFL. It's a complete and utter farce. Any danger of getting something more than the 45 seconds chopped up phone footage??!!

Only 4 weeks to go until our 1st JLT game. They'll show more then.

Yeah the AFL will anyway but Cockarfitt's point still remains. We are competing with very finite dollars in a crazily competitive industry and their digital fan engagement is so substandard it is not funny. So of the best stuff coming out of the club media wise in the last few years has been from the players which is a bad sign. In an AFL landscape where the club is constantly fighting for memberships and marketing/media dollars it is very poor service delivery in my opinion.

I'm not a member this year for the first time in my life. What I have noticed is, the club is quite happy to engage when they're chasing a buck. I've had countless e-mails and phone calls asking to renew my seat and membership.

Maybe if they spent as much time actually informing their members, supporters and followers about club news - especially injuries - it'd be a first class service.

Training this week has been at GMHBA so no access unfortunately, I hate this about our club.
