When I was in grade 6 in 1978, we went on a school trip to Kalgoorlie. The West Indies were playing there during WSC.
We were walking through a shopping centre and Joel Garner walked past us within a few feet.
He was the biggest human I had ever seen !

I saw him play plenty of times after that, but that first occasion seeing him in the flesh was awesome in the true sense.

Also the owner of easily the greatest ever sports/dick size quote:

Woman in England: Is it true what they say about big tall black men being in proportion?
Garner: if that was true I’d 9’6 not 6’9

It was a different era.

I remember Viv Richards going into 6UVSFM (now 6RTRFM) and playing his own collection of reggae records that he used to bring with him on tour.

Seems to be a rumour that could be true, although not sure why a cricinfo writer wouldn't be able to track down the Test stats for no-balls:

Another equally impressive Windies bowling anecdote is that Curtly Ambrose was never hit for six in a Test.

Didnt Colin Miller bomb him for a few on that 99 tour?

Maybe they gave this one 12 because it went out of the ground

Agreed - does anyone know what Gabriel actually said? I wonder if it referred to the Stokes/Hales situation?

No idea about it, Root played it down in the press conference saying things happen in the heat of the moment and failed to disclose what was said when pushed by the media.

You look at Holder's stats and nothing eye popping stands out. But man does he bring the intangibles to the West Indies side it seems. They miss him more than his stats show. Literally the only one who kept West Indies afloat in the midst of political turmoil as other players look for the quick bucks on the T20 circuit.

Discipline is a big one. His tactical nous isn’t brilliant but it has improved and he doesn’t just go through the motions. He has control of the situation - I personally loved seeing Gabriel charge up to tell Chase that he was having one more over when Brathwaite went to bring him on, but at the same time that wouldn’t have happened under Holder’s watch because either a) he’d have been smart enough to keep him on or b) Gabriel respects him enough to let the decision stand.

As a bowler he offers a degree of control that few other quicks in the world can give. Any time it starts to get away from them, he can pull that back. It allows bowlers like Gabriel and Joseph to attack with impunity.

As a batsman he brings such controlled technique that bowling sides will never feel they’re completely on top until he’s out. In the first innings at 6-90, England would have sensed 120-130 all out, even though Paul has some batting credibility. If Holder was walking out, I’ve got no doubt there’d have been a sense that ‘ok we are a big chance but they could easily still get 200 here.’

He is the fulcrum of the slips cordon and has the best hands in the side. His absence throws the whole hierarchy out.

On top of all that, he imbues his players with a degree of confidence that they don’t otherwise have.

You look at Holder's stats in the last two years and everything is eye popping.

Windies giving up the ghost here. Still, from their perspective it's already job done.

Pitch is a minefield yes but this is terrible batting from the West Indies.

There is exaggerated seam movement in the pitch and the new ball is swinging as well, it's obvious that survival is very hard. Your best option is to shelve your drive completely and try to defend or score singles to balls aimed at your body and hope that the ball becomes soft as overs go on. What do the Windies batsmen do? Campbell, Hope and Bravo are practising their cover drives and off drives on the up. The match is impossible to salvage, but hope to see some ticker from the Windies bats here.

Gabriel’s been charged...
Wow. What he said may have been derogatory but there is no way he should be charged. I also think the ban for Sarfraz was over the top (three match suspension, seriously. A fine and reprimand is sufficient.). The heat of the moment in sports brings out the worst of us, myself included, but it is not like Gabriel walked out sporting the slogan "God hates ****". He'll probably make a fake apology to the media and we'll applaud it off when really he feels hard done by.

I mean, I'm pretty sure we literally don't know what he said so unless I've missed that being reported I'm not sure how you can see getting charged as out of order either way. For what it's worth unfortunately violent 1980's style homophobic rhetoric is still relatively common throughout the Caribbean.

Although to steal a joke I've seen doing the rounds, if Gabriel said something really homophobic Stokes would have run out on the pitch and fought him.

I’m not sure where I sit on this one. If it was something pretty basic like ‘I’m bowling too quick for your boyfriend up here’ or whatever, I think that’s the sort of thing that you can overlook. Whereas calling someone a fa66ot or something, that’s on a different level.

Hopefully it was just a big dumb quick being a big dumb quick.

Disappointing to see the lack of application and intensity in the last test but overall I’m a very proud fan.
Every player did their part in some capacity. Campbell gave us some good starts (Brathwaite as well but he was overall a bit of a let down), Bravo played one exceptional knock and showed his value returning to the team. Hope probably the other let down though he played a good knock in Antigua.
Hetmeyer crucial in the first test, so too Chase with bat and ball, and that century today will do him the world of good.
Dowrich kept very well, scored a century and other handy runs.
Holder needs no embellishment.
Roach either.
Joseph coming out to bat with Bravo hours after his mother died, and taking a couple of wickets, is something I’ll remember for a long time.
Gabriel probably didn’t get the figures to go with it but he brought some real fire almost every time he bowled.

Well done boys.
