The Australian Cup is in the bin for mine. In the 90's horses like Vo Rogue, Saintly, BLU, Veandercross and Let's Elope were winning. In the early 00's horses like Northerly, Lohnro and the great Makybe Diva were winning. This decade we've got ****ing Harlem going BACK-TO-BACK. The death of Australian middle distance weight-for-age racing is happening right in front of our eyes!!!

Great days racing. Nothing wrong with the ride on OB, certainly didn’t cost it the race. Found cover, ground looked better towards the centre and he wasn’t blocked for a run. Was under pressure a long way out and the 1200 might be too sharp for him at the top level. Will always flash home but is likely to keep finding one better if he can’t get closer in the run.

TA showed what he’s capable of at his best in Sydney, and the rest are running for second in the TJ if he finds another track like that on the day.

Avilius just not good enough. Life ban at that level for me. As much as I wanted her too Shillelagh wasn’t either. Given the perfect ride from Williams, she’s a funny horse that needs to be stuck in to a long way from home and he gave her every chance, she just didn’t get the trip. Harlem’s mugged me off in back to back Aus cups..awful race!

Talking through my wallet and haven’t seen a replay but thought ride on OB was shit at best

The safe option was definitely to sit on the back of Brave Smash, but going to the middle gave him cover and arguably the better ground. He was actually struggling to keep up at one point, and was never held up for the run and the gaps came when needed. The tactic must’ve been discussed with connections as it was a clear plan from as soon as he jumped.

As Moody pointed out he was completely unimpeded (how good is drone vision!) and no runner in the race really has an excuse. Best horse on the day won imo.

That was a really weird/bad day of punting. A plethora of placings all culminated with Redzel not running down Ball Of Muscle.... WTF!!! I should have known after being chips in Savatiano last night, when will my luck turn.... we go again #TheGreatGame

Amen brother

Backed...

Redzel
Ozzie (get Exacta if it runs down Sunlight plus 1-2-5-6 in tri)
Spright
Nantaali
Exhilarates
Shraaoh (and had in double with Sires winner)

All second

Plus Avilius does his best Kementari impression and even Trapeze Artist decides to have his going day as soon as I drop off

Only highlight was the Sires winner. And at least I'm not dumb enough to continually pile money into Kem ;)

lol you are kidding yourself - biggest certainty beat in a big G1 since JV's Caulfield Cup and won't be beaten on that merit for some time. All he has to do is follow Eduardo and he wins with ease.

1200m too sharp for him at the top level!?!?! He was beaten a bees dick in the Lightning - turn it up!

The good thing about TA winning is he will now be posion unders for the rest of the prep including in the TJ and will make a price for more consistent horses. I am happy to continue to bet around him - if he suddenly starts to perform consistently at this stage of his career then I will lose but highly doubt that happens. Fully expect Redzel to roll him next time out for example.

What stopped him winning with ease anyway then? Didn’t get boxed in or blocked for a run where he was. Just didn’t catch the one out in front.

So if Hugh rode in a straight line he wouldn't have had any horses in a his way right?

It's called changing direction.

On another matter close to the forum's heart I see Muntahaa gave another glowing endorsement to the Ebor form and Sound continues to show the German form he brought over is utter shit as I said all last spring in the lead up to the Cups.

It might’ve cost him something, but he made up for that by getting cover and the superior ground. He never lost momentum, and Eduardo folded too early to cart him into the race on the outside. Hugh takes either option and he still gets beat.

He lacks any tactical speed and will always require an element of luck in the top grade. He’s a very, very good horse who just found one better today. It wasn’t a small margin and Sunlight deserves full credit.

agree with you, Had every chance. but he was shockingly weighted. I blame the ridiculous rating system

A spectacular looking win to TAS in the Randwick Guineas no doubt, but there's something bugging me about it and it's the filly that ran 2nd.

He might go to a new level if tested out to 2000m, but for mine the way it was run Mystic Journey would've had him comfortably today.

Thoughts?

Thrilling race and eye catching run, but I haven’t seen the sectionals to get a rough idea how it stacks up.

14-1600m is about the limit on how short he can win at, and even then he might struggle at open grade. Everything about him screams he wants a longer trip, but for breeding purposes they don’t want him winning anything over 2000m, which is annoying because I’d love to see him in the Derby. They want that win at WFA, but they obviously can’t race Winx, so I’ve got no idea what they do.

Madison County closed it off nicely for 4th, but the last time we saw that horse he was unable to run down Long Leaf and a $151 pop back in NZ.

All speculative without the times and doesn't change people's memories of a great win, but for mine it's raised more questions than answers.

on raw performances out of the racebook i doubt he has Kementari covered from last year, or at least on par. but he just looks like there's so much more in store, especially over further. he's going to start unders in most races but still probably win them until he comes out of 3yo grade.
