Part 4 is here:

The logistics of moving the entire port down there means it would take well over a decade. It will happen one day much like a Grand Final not at the MCG will happen one day.

It will need to happen eventually.

The area is already a nightmare for trucks, If we continue to grow as a city it's going to get worse. It's simply getting from the port Through to Leach Highway which is the massive problem. Plus the port has about 50 years left in it if we continue to grow at our current rate.

Need to bite the bullet and move the port now. Kwinana is probably the best bet. The area is already pretty open, Easy to stick a rail trough it as well to help transport.

Maybe split the ports between Perth, Geraldton and Bunbury and get the train line operational out of Geraldton again and divide into zones

I have no clue whether that’s practical or the logistics involved but it opens up growth and jobs to regional areas and takes the pressure off Perth

There are a few ports in WA. Freo is the main container port servicing the Perth population but for our export industries the nearest port with the handling capability is the most sensible option. What you don't want is ships loading in Bunbury or Gero when all that's going to happen is the cargo is then trucked to Perth.

So Kwinana.

Yeah Nah. Container ships are full of stuff for Perth and the general metro area. Trucking it all around the state would cost more money and clog highways already struggling.

It's worth pointing out that there is a report currently underway by Westport which is considering the long-term ports for the state, and is examining eight options. You can read the whole thing here.

In short:

1. Containers, bulk goods and passengers remain at Fremantle, bulk-only at Kwinana and bulk good and passengers at Bunbury (which is how things are currently).
2. Containers shift over time from Fremantle to Kwinana, everything else remains the same.
3. Containers shift from Fremantle to Bunbury, everything else remains the same.
4. Passengers only at Fremantle, Kwinana takes containers, Bunbury remains as is.
5. Passengers only at Fremantle, Bunbury takes containers, Kwinana stays as is.
6. Bulk goods removed from Fremantle, containers added to Kwinana.
7. Bulk goods removed from Fremantle, containers added to Bunbury.
8. Bulk goods removed from Fremantle, everything else remains as is.

Sounds complicated for a Friday night.

Waay too expensive. Bunbury is the biggest "City after Perth" and its got about 4% of the population that Perth has, Gero has 2%. So your trucking about about 94% of all produce back to perth, May as well slap on 10 bucks for anything imported overseas.

That is not how logistics works. Almost everything is shipped or trained into Perth then distributed by truck over the state.

Canning Vale (when I used to work there) used to get containers of toilet paper from overseas, containers of Corn Flakes from the East Coast (on trains), toothpaste from both and a bunch of other stuff then truck some of it all over the state. Sending part of it east on the returning trains.

So it couldn’t be distributed to the north or east out of Geraldton.

All options are going to be expensive at the end of the day but I do see above that a combo of Bunbury and freo is already on the cards so it’s irrelevant

The fact that it also expands these regional areas was an added bonus. Then again with the metro spread we aren’t that far from both options actually being suburbs

It doesn't really expand, For the sake of a few thousand jobs moving you still suddenly adding about 2 hours freight for 92% of imported goods. It would be an absolute massive cost, Not only for building the infastructure but the costs of goods as well everytime something hits our shores

You would want 8 times as many people in bunbury to even entertain the idea

As traffic builds it will take those hours to get from Freo to Kewdale for example where you could do a mountain more volume from Bunbury with a dedicated rail corridor

There's enough space and resources in the world to accommodate the people we have if most of use weren't greedy campaigners. But regardless, the world's population is expected to top out around 2100 and then contract. So, yeah, if we know there might be more people coming in the immediate future, what does it hurt to plan for it? Don't push them all into Perth or Sydney or Melbourne, invest in making Bunbury, Newcastle or Geelong more attractive.

It has to get to kewdale anyways. That volume going through that corridor isn't the problem. It's from Fremantle through north Freo. Freo then Palmyra. Once you hit leach/canning it's fine and and won't need to be thought about for a long time.(triple the population overnight and you still have canning/leach/Roe)Issue is mainly the port will fill up in 30 Years. Those bridges via Fremantle have about 50 years left in them as well. Demolish the entire city of Fremantle is off the list of things to do so you need to relocate the port. Build a road bypassing freo would cost about a billion and in 30 years the port will still be stuffed. Suddenly you have another.massive highway which won't service much or get much use (Roe 8 anyone) and will still have the exact same traffic fubar in north freo)
