GWS doesnt look that great ..which means Ess are really smelling it up.

Probably least surprising result of the week for mine. Bombers were an absolute rabble in the last JLT game against us and with only 2 pre season games you are in strife heading into the season if you are going that bad.

Gold Coast would have rolled Essendon today. They look awful. Do we have them early in the season or will we catch them in the middle of the season when they have a purple patch and cause their 3 upsets before going back to being average.
Just lol at the experts picking them for top 4 because they added one good player. They start every year like garbage and scrape a few wins together late in the year to get close to finals, rinse, repeat. Will probably get their first win against us in rnd 6 or 7, whenever it is. We played them into form last year.

im not too bothered by the commentary usually, but dwayne russell outdid himself today. every single thing he says is so comically over the top, and every moment of the game is as if theres a minute left in the prelim with the scores level.

7 minutes to go in GC v saints, and he yells out during a fairly sedate passage of play: 'most people thought they wouldnt win a game all season, and they just might pinch on in the first round!'

most people thought that? really?

and then a young GC player had a shot to put them in front from 25 metres out, straight in front: 'and against all the odds, he puts it through!'

against all the odds, dwayne? really? id say the odds were most definitely in his favour from there...

he is utterly mindless.

He’s atrocious. Just amazingly incompetent.

That said, he was outdone for the most stupid comment of the round. Luke Darcy described a player having a set shot - fairly basic component of footy - as .....”steps up to the plate”.

It’s not a plate you utter imbecile. It’s not baseball. It’s not any US sport you’re so desperate to emulate. And it isn’t hip or cool to think it is. It sounds pathetic and insecure.

totally agreed... the need to pull in references that make absolutely no sense from various US sports is very strange.

bruce had one today, as well (though in his defence, i was only half paying attention, so there may have been some context i missed from earlier in the game): 'heath shaw doesnt have usain bolts body, but he has a great footy mind!'

alright, bruce.

The sad thing is that this Americanisation of our venacular is so commonplace that Darcy wouldn’t even see it as utilising an American expression.

I hate the soundbites he does for the news.
Player runs into an open goal from 30m, a total formality, and he starts screaming just as it goes through.
Most of them do it , but he's the worst.

You mean like ..
The kick off happens and the big man hits it out the park right down the throat of the other ruckman.. gees thats from left field .. he does a 360 now and hits his rover with an upper cut combination hook handpass..He puts the hammer down pedal to the metal and now he rad barrels it forward ..but the opposition have parked the bus , their sweeper comes across to get the ball but it bounces short and does a dog leg break googley towards goal..its dribbling bouncing dribbling dribbling GOAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL ...arhh GOAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL. Boy that was a Hail Mary Kick that ended up being a slam dunk.

Only 1 round in - so its early days - but i still think Richmond are the number team 1

Posted last year - i thought they were an absolute certainty for the flag - and easily the best side in the comp - but somehow they got beat - and after watching Friday nights game - i dont know how they got beat

This year on the main board thread - i didnt put either Ess or Adel in the 8 - didnt fall for the hype at all . Had the slows on Melb but i put them in - in the bottom half of the 8 i put in Haw and Geel - and from memory i put Fremantle in 8th spot

Fairly certain one of the commentators during our match said "a nest of cats" to describe the play. Not sure I've ever seen a cat in a birds nest, but that's probably just me.
