Take shorty out of the backline, move him to wing half forward, we need his long kicking
Into the forward 50, ,plus he is a great set shot for goal, , will be the making of jayden
That’s worth a shot. Could be dangerous around goals and as you say long and quick into the f50

I’m pretty sure he played all his junior football as a mid/small forward.

Grimes couldn’t handle it .. gets reported for a stupid act first game with out Rance.

But yep put another loss down to Short.

bit unfair. Not ideal to get reported but his general football was excellent, in tough circumstances.

Grimes and Vlastuin stepped up as expected. You can see how he would get frustrated playing alongside squibs Ellis and Short. Even rance used to do stupid shit occsionally

Yes his first game against Collingwood, he kicked 3 goals ,
He seems lost d own back,, he is not a natural defender
And with rance gone for the year, shorty will struggle even more

last preseason he trained wing/fwd and was moved back to the backline due to injuries so they had already found the deficiencies in his game too much and planned on moving him. he ended up making a decent fist of it so they left him there this year despite his weaknesses never really being addressed. could easily be playing in weller’s spot and we could have debuted eggmolesse or stack off the half back.

well move him to a forward pocket or wing then if we cant move him to the VFL

Hardwick was a pretty unskilled, dirty, hard at it defender. I am surprised he is so accepting of mediocrity cause the guy can kick a bit

Did he kick more goals than the bloke he was standing this week?
With Rance out his attacking becomes even more valuable.
As Dimma said he was pretty happy with the backline.
Paul Roos said yesterday historically post match pressers have always been for the benefit of the supporters and media, and rarely support the actual views of the coaching staff.

It's our biggest worrie

Well I reckon there will be less head scratching over our backline in that it’s out of our hands. All we can do is replace players and see how they go.

Our mid field set up and out of sync small forward etc is where the coaches will be earning their money.

There is no such thing as a backline if your midfield is mostly small slow and unskilled. This is our Achilles heel and it’s not going to improve unless some of those first year draftees kick on at a faster rate than normal.
Short has been very good this Year alongside all of our defenders considering our poor midfield depth.
He’s also showing up four of the other six small forwards we’ve been carrying.
Astbury has been our poorest defender for months ( looking at last years end) now and he will suffer the most from Rance’s absence bc Rance pretty well did everything for him except his knitting.

No it's not our midfield is by far our biggest worry, when we get flogged on the contested possessions and uncontested and you have less tackles... that's a problem we getting and beaten and we aren't winning the ball back like we were last year.

Whilst others have been banging on about Astbury being a must keep due to free agency i have been open to letting him leave if a great offer for him and Ellis comes along.

I believe both Astbury & Ellis are easily replaced and there are players that could easily fill their roles, I would be right into Sam Taylor from the GWS or saving my dollars to have a go at Harris Andrews.

Just have to look at some players recently drafted like Taylor, Naughton to see the young talent thats available in the draft.

Some times you just need to cash in players whilst the buying is there
Astbury , Ellis , Castagna should all be considered trade able

not the silliest idea astbury/ellis as FA ive heard if it means 2 x r2 selections. I think a tight cap will result in at least 1 if not both having to split anyways

Now losing the midfield, as usual, and losing games more often.

first in regular season; generally losing the midfield

Short waqs lining up on a wing at centre bounces a few times, but Dimma's steadfast on getting the extra defender back, he just runs straight into the D50 as soon as the ball goes up.

Only problems there, teams feed the ball out to the lose wingman and he pumps it straight over shorts head!!!

yeah this rolling of positions at the centre bounce dimma has come up with to combat 666 isn’t working imo

should have spent preseason working with the new rules instead of trying to circumvent them

I think the point is we can get away with it against teams who have only a couple of good mids bc we make up the difference with the small man pressure when they relieve the big boys in Martin and Cotchin. Unfortunately when you’re up against Collingwood these back up troops can’t go with Pendlebury,Treloar, Beams Sidearse and co. Also add their ruck in Undies and you have way too many guns to disarm.
They will belt us any day and everyday if we go armed the way we did last week.
The fact that we were 17th in clearances last year should have been warning signs to get an A grade midfielder ASAP. We addressed the problem in the draft , but that’s more long term.
