Its not only that his handballs that go directly to our players in shit positions or who are under pressure or at their legs behind their back which the stats don't show how it costs us.....eg watts

Is there a place for slow defenders under the new rules? DBJ and Bonner have burnt the ball, but are getting too it. Jonas is looking too often so far this year like a lumbering throw back defender. I’m sure an unpopular opinion here and it’s too soon to say the game has passed him by, but it’s a very inauspicious start to his Captaincy in my eyes, as far as his own performance goes.

Jonas has always been that player. He had one really strong year when he played pretty much loose behind the ball and was third man up at contests. His disposal has always been suspect and if he loses a yard in pace he’s done.

Giving him the captaincy was always a mistake.

Where does this “Boak gave the ball to the opposition 50% of the time” thing come from? The AFL app has him at 70% disposal efficiency, with 6 turnovers from 33 disposals.

He certainly doesn’t turn it over that much

Just has a bad habit of turning the ball over when we are skating forward expecting him to hit up the option when he is free and just bizarrely he will undo all his good work by doing something amazingly wrong.

Still does a truckload of running and ballwinning through the wings.

Agree 100%. It's like the rain forces him to slow down a step and make sure he executes properly. When it's dry he goes 1000% and often ends up doing more harm than good.

I notice that with SPP to he needs to sort his mental approach to the game out. I was wondering if the coach has been cramming stuff in his head that he has not been able to process properly. Like to see Monty or Schofield get in his ear a bit.

Considering everything was against us, we did well to win tonight. Need to sharpen up a bit for the Brisbane game next weekend though.

Very solid win in the conditions, very happy.

1st Quarter

Seemed to be executing all of the 2019 game-plan except the super important parts of making good decisions and hitting targets, similar to the first quarter vs Melbourne but more poor choices as well as poor execution. Did enough to stay within touching distance.

2nd Quarter

Solid performance, you could see we were playing the way we want to play and kicked 4 goals to 0. Rockliff had 24 or something crazy to half-time and we'd tidied up the smart short kicks and handballs, felt we were looking good to run away with it.

3rd Quarter

Rain came in and it took till about 10 minutes to go in the quarter before we started to fully adjust to the conditions and dominate territory.

4th Quarter

Fully adjusted to the conditions and played wet weather footy pretty well, it was just a slog.


Rockpig and Lycett were huge. Motlop stood up when it mattered. Boak great, DBJ got alot of it in the wet.

Butters hands were elite in the wet, freakish even, as if he was playing with a dry footy when everyone else was struggling.

Onwards and upwards!

Both teams covered an insane amount of ground. 301.6 for port and 301.7 for carlton. That's the 18th highest distance covered on record.

Duursma covered the most of any player at 17.4km. Also the most at high speed of 3.2km.

He is a ****ing freak.

I’m keen to give my votes and not include Boak in my top 5.

Andre’s observations about Boak’s kicking were right. He had a scrappy game and was not alone with his errant kicking. In direct contrast, Rockliff’s kicking was elite. Best I’ve seen from a Port midfielder since Roger James.

Workmanlike effort. I feel like I should be disappointed with a mere 16 point win over Carlton, but in wet, greasy conditions the intensity we showed, against the marked mprovement in Carlton's skill and effort, makes this a satisfying win.

Noticable live was the discipline we showed, in not getting drawn into the contest and getting exposed outside. This must come from one of the new coaches. Our structure looks so much better, too. We always had players in front of the play coming torwards the ball carrier.

Damn shame about Watts, broken leg, I think? Season ruined if so. Howard will be a ready replacement there. Amon...don't know - maybe a month at worst, but Duursma can make him redundant.

PLAYERS:
Powell-Pepper - finished off his work much cleaner this week. He is a real battering ram in close, often using his body to clear a path for others to work in rather than getting it himself. Looks fit, and sealed the game with that late set snap. 8/10

Burton - worked into it after a quiet first term. He looks so much bigger live. Gives a real sense of security when he gets the ball - a really good recruit. 7/10

Ryder - thought he struggled in ruck, he looked like he wasn't jumping very well and got beaten by Phillips. As a forward, was ineffective due to conditions, but gave some clever tap ons and a aerial focal point. Ii think he is a natural forward, he knows when to lead and attracts the ball. Will have better days. 5/10

Motlop - won the game with his 2 final quarter goals, but I thought he was mostly poor. He wants to showboat when he gets it, and the rain sunk the showboat today. He also has no defensive inclination to identify a dangerous opponent leaving a contest. 4/10

Ebert - had a good day with 20 and 3. Loves those conditions, and it is a luxury to throw a relatively fresh Ebo into the midfield late in quarters. 7/10

Gray - just class. His handling in the conditions is unsurpassed, the true sign of a genius. Genuinely surprised that he had 27 disposals, but that shows that he got a lot of the ball in close. Should probably stop rooting umpires' sisters... 8/10

Boak - wasted on a flank for seasons, he relishes the coalface, and would be our star IF ONLY he was better with ball in hand. His kicks lack penetration and shape; he matches Mattthew Richardson for floaters, and he just doesn't have the creativity that sets superstars like Gray apart. 8/10

Rockliff - that's what we bought! He is such a smart player; played a blocking role across half-forward when we were in attack, and you could just see him reading the play brilliantly. He uses it intelligently, too. Carlton's third term resurgence was built on sending some anonymous benchwarmer to shut him down after 24 first half disposals. 9/10

Marshall - still has a way to go, and conditions didn't suit, but just the odd glimpse of his smarts is tantalising. 3/10

Amon - injured early, will be replaced by Wines with Duursma moving to his wing 1/10

Clurey - looked in trouble early, but once Curnow went off, he played the general's role on the last line, and made no noticeable errors 7/10

Butters - wow, what a get! The creativity, the class - that handball to Drew to free up Duursma in the last gifted Motlop's sealer, and the coolness to slot our only third term goal and halt Carlton's momentum... he just looks the complete package. Imagine when he builds a body and a tank! 8/10

Rozee - looks classy and composed. His second term purple patch ignited our win today, and he seems to understand the game and his role in our team perfectly. A high footy IQ 7/10

Duursma - THIS IS THE HIGHLIGHT OF MY DAY!!! He was our best, IMO - he ran hard, linked up well with the mids and ran on, defended well and even though his kicking action looks clumsy, he has good shape and penetration with his kick. Really nice size, and could flourish on a wing 9/10

Watts - was good again, until injured. Sadly, if his leg is broken, it is probably the end of his season, even if it heals in time it will take ages to fully recover his fragile confidence. 5/10

Bonner - like Burton, worked into the game. Liked his improved defensive effort, and his composure and vision to get the ball out of defence safely - it's something that he has added to his game from last year, when he was one of the worst exponents of the hack kick 7/10

Drew - one of our best, and might have scored his first Brownlow vote today. He is so visible, with his shock of orange hair, but he also stands out because of his big body and the upright way he operates inside. Got to be current favourite for this week's RS. Smashed Walsh. 9/10

Lycett - Monster. Just dominated ruck, and was good around the ground as well. 25 disposals - who was the last Port ruck to get that? Probably our best, even if I loved Duursma better. 10/10

Byrne-Jones - very good today. Wet conditions suit him, with his direct attack on the ball. 8/10

Westhoff - beaten by Weitering, but competed the ball to ground and worked hard to keep it locked in. A stellar career which is still showing improvement. 5/10

Jonas - struggled with McKay's height and hands, but held his own when not forced to leap with him. I like that he keeps the ball in front of him and rus straight through it to keep it going our way. Solid. 7/10

Houston - growing as a reliable defender before our eyes. Lookss so composd and calm with the ball coming towards him; it instills confidence in his team-mates and the crowd that he won't be beaten, then he uses it superbly. 8/10

I’ll agree with that. His turnovers often come at shit times. As I said above though, we would be a much worse side without him, mostly due to the running and ballwinning.

Many here thought Boak, Ebert and Rockliff were cooked following the end of last year but shifting around their positions and getting their bodies right has been a masterstroke. Veterans leading by example and the young guns following suit.
