Next premiership contender: Melbourne or Essendon?

Well played Melbourne, I reckon you're a shot for top 4.
Better than Geelong or Port IMO.
Still have quality players to come back too.

The two biggest examples of teams drinking their own bath water. Can’t believe people were sucked in by either of these teams over the off season. Sunday’s game will be harder to pick than a broken nose.

I know this comment is from a year ago but it couldn't be more accurate in regards to the current predicament of Melbourne and Essendon.

An yet Melbourne made a prelim so the comment was stupid in hindsight

What part of current didn't you understand?

We were 2-3 and lost to Hawthorn by 10 goals in round 5 an people said we were rubbish. Once again sweeping statements after 2 games are stupid

My opinion. Essendon will won a premiership in 10 years time. Melbourne are by far the weakest club I have ever seen. They will never win a flag in my lifetime. If you go to Melbourne careers are ruined.

Melbourne list is overrated. Yes they get the ball out but they are slow and have no stills. Their forward line is no good. All those year down the bottom and they have done nothing.

Shit teams don't have 73 inside 50s, we aren't one of the best teams but I'd be pretty certain next time we get 25 more inside 50s than an opponent the scoreline won't be the same

Not saying anything anyone doesn't know but the two issues with that are that your back line pretty much just lay down and let every Geelong entry be a score and your forward line did nothing with the entries.

This isn't new either with similar happening a couple of times last year.

Or maybe it's a mid field issue? Not running back enough and delivery garbage.

What changes though from this time to the next when you get 65+ I50?

In isolation every area of the field needs to improve. The defence was horrific but May played half a game an Lever will come back from his knee. Will it fix us? Not into the best backline but I'm sure a fit Lever an May make some impact.

The midfield is too inside heavy, it sounds great having Viney, Jones, Oliver an Brayshaw in together but once one of them wins the ball the others are passengers. They don't link play, don't use it well and don't kick goals.

The forward line again isn't the best in the league but we were pretty easily the highest scoring side last year. Last night was wet so I give a pass too McDonald an Weid. Our problem is our small forwards suck.

Melksham is a link player, he's not a traditional crumber. We lost Hannan an Garlett to injury an then lost Kent to StKilda. So our small forward options are Sparrow, Petracca an Lockhart. A young inside midfielder, a slow medium tall and another inside midfielder.

Every other team has pressure forwards an We have inside mids resting there.

People can take pot shots all they want but you don't have 73 inside 50s against the cats at Kardinia if you are completely shit.

I can honestly say only Salem an Oliver would be happy in their season so far so individually there's plenty to improve.

I think we will work into the season slowly, how long that takes is anyone's guess

Melbournes last 3 games have been absolute capitulations, yet they must be favourites to beat the bombers who dont play footy any good. Not sure what this will
prove. But there is snow early so some hope for melbourne

Maybe Hogan was a bigger loss than we think. He has attitude problems but he is a very good player. And with the best full back on him, he was taking the pressure off Tom McDonald, and even Gawn to creep forward.

Melbourne had 73 inside 50's yesterday for 6 goals. That is a huge number of forward entries. Geelong in comparison only had 48 inside 50's and kicked 20 goals. They had 10 more clearances than Geelong too. And Tom McDonald... 2 behinds. A side with a strong forward set up such as Adelaide or Hawthorn, with that differential of inside 50's would have won by 10 goals.

Melbourne should be fine. They need to fix their offense. With those numbers... the midfield is doing their job. Backline needs some work too... 20.6 is a bad score to give up. That's way too accurate, and indicative of a poor defensive set up with too many goals being kicked from directly in front and close in.

Essendon have more problems than Melbourne.
