I find the 30 second thing poor. If you have the 30 seconds and you then short pass the next guy should only get 15 seconds before play on.
The 30 seconds should be a full proper shot in my view.

Totally agree. I reckon that they should have to request the 30 seconds and if they do they have to take a shot.

Stats were first published regularly in Footy Week magazine in the mid-60's, an initiative of Harry Beitzel's. Stats-takers stood in the outer and recorded figures with paper and pencil. In the 1970's & 80's two Sunday papers published the stats, the Sunday Press and the Sunday Observer. Often, the stats were different between the two publications; one might be sourced from a media statistician and the other from the club.

Certainly, there wasn't the same rigour concerning accuracy that is applied today. A behind that came off hands and would be recorded as 'rushed' today, for example, might be ascribed to the kicker back then, and vice versa. There were no rules, just the recorder's interpretation.
As always Ron.
Great work.
I’m certain you’re right about the interpretation side.
I do recall the Sunday Press v Sunday Observer having differences.

Though the differences say in behinds kicked or rushed and so forth would be around the edges. So a player might have a recorded 69% or 68% accuracy when it should really be rushed etc so he’d be 70% say in reality.

One thing we’ve never counted to goal kicking accuracy is out on the full.
So having a shot Kernahan style going on the full never counts in his accuracy stats. In fact he benefits more for a complete miss than a point miss, in accuracy stats.

Fascinating conversation.

Was thinking the same. Was even thinking that the umps call time-off as soon as the player makes the call and time-on as soon as he kicks it. But then I'm torn because I recall games where we've been desperate to hang on and milking the clock could potentially have been the difference.

Bah! Let coaches/players get smart enough to game the rules I say. It's one of the only ways teams can differentiate themselves from everyone other team - being smart and working out subtle ways to gain a competitive edge.

Otherwise the AFL gets involved and then the next minute you have Satan's Starting lineup (6-6-6) and Zooper Dooper goals messing around with what was once a straight-forward game.

I'd normally agree, but in this one case I just think it's really unfair that forwards get 30 seconds to spot up a pass before it gets called play on, yet defenders only get about 7 seconds.

I do hate that. Should be an automatic free-kick if its not a genuine attempt on goal. Hard to adjudicate though

Agree but give the coaches/players less rules to game. The AFL is making it harder and harder for umpires, players, coaches and supporters ( especially our kids ) to even understand. Watching the game live now supporters of both teams often have no idea why free kicks are paid. Watching on television we have to listen to incessant explanations by umpires. I’d hate to be an umpire nowadays.
A tourist or newbie to the game would have to do a 3 day TAFE course on the rules before heading off to a match with their hosts these days.
Just have the fewest and simplest rules you can and ride the inevitable changing trends of tactics and counter tactics and the game will be fine.
The surest way to lose support for the game ( sorry, I should have said “product/brand ) is to make it impossible to understand.
The fact that we have a rules committee says it all really.
End rant 😊

Is this kicking in general or goal kicking you are talking about Saintly as imo the most effective for each are 2 very different types of kicks.

For goal kicking the best usually had a lot of hang time or up and under the footy. Ablett snr, Dunstall, Modra, Lloyd, Fevola, S.Rocca, Carey and Lockett kicked set shots like this.

Did Hudson kick goals with the same low hard flat kicks he used for field kicking out of interest?

Hudson? Field kicking???? That would have been akin to Hungry handballing !!

Fair call. Simplify it, same rules for wherever you are on the ground. No idea why you need longer to kick for goal than to kick from defence.

Hungry disposals was

10 kicks 1 handball

So 1 handball within 11 possessions.

Anyone there today? Channel 10 news last night said De Goey had De Gastro so if he's not out there, that's why.

Bloody Richmond, can't keep anything to themselves.

The rule should simply be, mark inside 50, you get 30 seconds. Mark outside 50, you get the normal 7.

And if you get the 30 seconds and don’t take a proper shot, ie short pass they just get what’s left of the original 30 seconds and then it’s play on.
