When the backs get the ball and look up to see none of 17 team mates presenting that seems like a serious work rate issue.
Have we come in unfit this year after last years hamstring crisis? Have we overreacted and not worked quite hard enough and find ourselves playing catch up. It also looks like a lot of guys are in self preservation mode. Failure to fire up has been a long term issue with this group. Captains and coaches need to prepare us better to battle.

If we have a game plan of holding on to possession via safe short kicking to transition the ball forward, which it looks as though we do, and it's worth mentioning that a number of clubs are doing the same thing, there is no room for players to present short with how teams are defending against us. And to try and hit someone leading into a zone 50 metres away, even the most elite kick in the game might only make that kick a couple of times out of ten. That's why the long down the line kick is to stationary talls. And none of ours currently are able to take strong contested marks. So the lack of confidence is understandable at the moment, as frustrating as it is.

Pfffttt .....Contested marking players are overrated .....so I was told

This exactly. It isn’t rocket science.

Football isn’t a complex game. After all it’s played by footballers.

Videos. Analysis. Statistics.

Why can’t the coaches see this?
Maybe they’re using the wrong videos and analysing the wrong statistics?

There needs to be a tinkering of gameplan, personnel, or both.

I suppose that when the runners are only allowed on field after a goal, and you only manage two in a half of football at the Dome, under a roof, that there might be problems getting messages to players.

Can someone tell Campo and Pykey that the runners are allowed on when the opposition kicks goals too? 'Cos I saw a fair bit of that happening and no adjustments?

Every club has to deal with the new runners rules. And yeah, the players "over corrected".

When do the coaches stand up and say "we're getting it wrong?"

Blind Freddie can see we're better than this. We don't have an ordinary list. We actually have a really talented list.

Underperforming.

And that is on the coaches.

It is on them to turn this around, and if they can't, ship them out.

I'm happy to see us have a crack and lose if we're beaten by a better team. But the game we're currently playing we may as well run the white flag up

If you think we finished 12th last year and we are likely to be bottom half this year and its all game plan, you certainly have rose colored glasses on

The answer to this thread is we need to take a long hard look at where we are at, the whole club including the coaches for their game plan coaching style, selection, the playing list and its depth how its made up and if they are capable, the recruitment department if the list isnt assembled right, the fitness department if we arent fit enough or injury issues

Obvioulsy the players are the most important part of the equation, which is why so much time goes into them, blind freddy can see that having quality players is over half the battle of any team and even with other factors, a quality group would make finals regardless of other factors. Some teams do it on the back of a few superstars some do it as a team effort without those standouts, no right or wrong in that answer both obviously work as we have seen over the years

The OP (or you) has no authority over what can be discussed

In fact you would do well to remember how little content you provide yourself before trying to limit what others can talk about

This quasi censorship thing is not cool.
You’re right, no one has the authority over what can be discussed. But you’re wrong in that the OP can’t make suggestions or agendas in this thread. Just like all the other OP’s with “sack” in their thread title.

I don’t think anyone has an issue with a thread proposing certain lines or suggesting a path for discussion, it’s wannabe internet parking inspectors like Jenny who continually, and it is continual, try to censor discussions that they otherwise offer nothing to.

When we're really languishing in the inevitable spanning years of pain that the club's maladministration has inflicted on us, Jenny can take pride in knowing that she fought against there being even allowed to be criticism of each and every one of the decisions that led us there.

I think the main issue we are too structured and well coached. And Pyke has misread how the game is to be played under 666.

Pyke is a good coach. He has our team playing his method. But his method is wrong.

I am hoping he can now see this and allow more chaos ball. Look.at how the Suns beat Carlton yesterday. The last ten minutes that is what we needed to do. Through our preferred ball movement out the window as North had blocked our predictable avenue to goal up. That is why our inside 50 count was so low.

We just needed to attack the goal mouth with every possession in that last ten minutes.

Pyke needs.to acknowledge this style of play is required more often than not and allow on field leaders to flick the switch when the structured plan is failing.

Go away Don.

There is opportunity to blood the youth now, lets get14 to 15+ games into some of the kids, lets not worry about how high we finish due to the pick swap, blooding youth may actually push us up the ladder. I think even the most optimistic supporters can realise this year is gone but it doesn't have to be wasted
Things can change quickly in this game

the coaching panel need to swallow some pride and take the shackles off regarding the game plan, take the game on.
We dont do "opportunity".

We need to find our next pack crasher/marker. Losing McGovern and then losing Doedee basically stuffed us up at either ends of a quality speedster who can do a serious aerial grab!
Fogarty will be a vital cog going forward .....same with Himmelberg, who played a physical game as a junior, but hasn't an AFL body to play the same at senior level ...yet !

This is clearly the problem its his 2nd year

But should we throw the season develop players like Fog knowing he will be inconsistent, play some shockers and also have some good games or continue with the older brigrade and see what they can do

remember there is no guarantee what himmelberg or Fog can achieve if anything at all

Oh they'll both be good players .....the timing of their readiness is when Tex and JJ retire ....so the club has it's list timing spot on

But to expect these lads to replace the Walker's and JJ now is, as you say, unreasonable due to massive inconsistencies

Sometimes I think that's all they do is focus on stats. The graph says all good no problems. Nothing to see here.

If this is the result of the various rule changes which were designed to create more scoring and nicer looking games.
👎 it has to be the most unmitigated failure of all rule changes.
We were playing nice football even last year but now it 💩 stinks.

I agree, I think there is more chance Fog will get to the top level and himmelberg is still hit and miss in my book, but that doesn't mean I don't want to see him get a crack

See what they can do I say but please don't concern ourselves with a dip on the ladder because of it

I believe now is the time to unleash the Fog. Play him in the ruck if need be, just play him now! We need to play with some aggression and Fog has it naturally in buckets.

“Continuity” is a double-edged sword. Team can gel and improve more with the C word, but the team can easily keep on stuffing it up and can get worse without the right structure or gameplan.

Overall, to me it’s simple: Continuity works if the team is playing in a convincing winning fashion (a la 2017). If the team is playing like they have emphysema with lack of run, effort and episodic coughs and chokes (a la 2019), then continuity should be abandoned. Either change up the structure or the gameplan. Or change up the players. We need to throw in more natural mongrel and toughness!

It really depends on what stats they look at - all will have varying degrees of relevance.
Example:
- how many neat 15m kicks we do in our defensive end - minimal relevance.
- 1-3 win:loss start - big relevance!

True bet the back slap a lot about neat kicks in our 50 then ;)

I actually don't think the teams that are using the short chip kick to maintain possession is a result of any of the rule changes. It's an evolution of a game plan on the back of analysing statistics. But you're right, the way we are playing does stink. I hope to see some obvious changes in the next 2 weeks.
