Wellingham to WCE in exchange for pick 17

I'd reckon 95 percent of 'Pies fans would reckon that Wellers didn't reach anywhere near his full potential. And the club gave him every opportunity to achieve it.

He was the most inconsistent player in our midfield - which as frustrating as that was for fans, would be doubly so for the coaching staff.

This.

I've said before, at his absolute best, he's Judd like. Hits packs with great speed and comes out with the ball. Hard bodied, with great pace despite not blistering speed.

Problem was, we only saw his absolute best maybe twice?

Against Carlton in 2010(?) When he kept Judd to 9 posessions while amassing 19 himself in the first half before getting injured.

Then in 2011 (or lwas that last year?) against Melbourne when he had 37.

Outside of that, he's only played in patches and some good matches here and there. His inconsistency was his weakness. On pure ability he's a really really good player, and if West Coast can get his best consistently, then they did well using pick 17 on him.

The problem is, Collingwood's midfield is an embarassment of riches. Who do you put him ahead of to make sure he starts in the midfield to get that consistency going? Pendlebury? Ball? Swan? Thomas?

2 yrs ago when Pendles and Swan were missing against the Dees on the QB weekend game we all saw what he could be but it never happened and I doubt after being here 5 or 6 seasons it was ever going to happened.

Collingwood as thing,s stand have done alright out of his trade it is up to Wellingham to prove the club wrong speaking personally when he elected to leave the club I do not want him to be successful I only care about players who are playing for the Pies.

I also think that it was up to Wellingham what standard of football he provided not the club or the coaches that is a copout, the club provides all players with the same standard of coaching so that they may reach their potential and it is up to them to use it fully.

I agree with Maxwell that he could be a significantly better player than he is,but now that he has left I don,t care if he reaches the standard he could,he had his chance here and he never took it end of story.

People we were doing so well by not mentioning the war, I mean the "mythical Melbourne match".
Now two posts in a row, arrgghhhh.;)

One match against a tanking Dees.....& a legend is born.

And why we are bothering to argue the point!
I think it's a psychological desire to want to downgrade his loss and talk up a trading coup!

I've always rated him. Could dredge up the glowing post of my review of the first time I saw him in the AFL. He's consistently ripped in just under 20 possies every year since 2010, despite being pushed out to play the majority of time on the wings. Not exactly sure how this is a negative! He's not soft and has good skills.

Those suggesting he hasn't reached his potential may be right, but even if you look at the likes of Kerr, his numbers ain't that much different at the same age. Still, Wellers has never really had the killer instinct of a Kerr type, and you have to consider that when analysing player 'potential'. Either way, he's only 24 and peaking isn't 'normal' at that age anyway.

Yes I do recall you talking him up from pretty much the day he played his first VFL game.

This is the ultimate win-win trade. We freed salary cap, picked up a valuable draft pick that gave us the best young ruck in the land, and replaced him directly with a premiership player with a similar set of skills. West Coast add extra depth to their midfield and pick up a player entering the peak years of his career. Wellers gets to return to his home state and to learn to live independantly, at least for a year until Buddy signs with the Dockers.

Beautiful mover. Very one touch hands, even under extreme pressure. Can win his own footy and also run to receive.

Poor kick. Poor concentration.

His best position is as an inside midfielder, but couldn't get that gig in our midfield.

Overall a good player who may become a very good player, if he can rectify his issues.

I loved Wellers..
I think he played his role well, and consistently.
He did definitely have the odd game well above his standards, doesn't mean all his others were below par.
I think he's a big loss actually..
His mind possibly wasn't 100% focused last year but we've seen that in the past from many of the great players of recent years.. Swan, Johnson, Cloke, Dids, Taz, Heath, Thomas..
Wellers will come good very soon, I think the shift home might see him really rise to elite AA standard..

I think Wellingham is a quality player who was perhaps a victim of not being able to break into a quality midfield unit. As a result he was played all over the place. Given an on ball role at a club like Melbourne, I have no doubt he would excel and be among their best players and an A grade AFL mid. When we have had injuries he always stepped in and did more than just a good cover job.

If he stayed at Collingwood however he would have remained a bit part player & not realised his potential. I fear he may run into similar problems at West Coast given their great depth of quality mids as well.

For the Pies he was not a vital player but a very handy one. However given we were able to effectively trade him in for a quality 10 year ruckman (potentially) it was a dream trade. An "expendable" player in an area we had depth for a player that we were desperately in need of. Couldn't have worked much better.

That seems to cover the situation from the Pies side and I guess from his side it was a case of rather being a bit player at home than a bit player on the wrong side (for him) of the country.

I quite surprised that Wellingham has only recieved 7 Brownlow votes in the 5 years and 92 games he played for the Pies.
These are his stats per game from his Collingwood days:
Kicks: 10.1 per game
Handballs: 8
Disposals: 18.1
Marks: 3.7
Goals: 0.6
Behinds: 0.5
Tackles: 3.7
Hitouts: 0.1
Frees for: 0.7
Frees against: 0.8
Brownlow Votes: 0.09

I think injuries also played quite a big role in why Wellingham was never consistently great. Was it 2011 where he started the year as one of our bests and then he twisted his knee and played out the season hot and cold? He's had ankle problems too. Like others have said, being down the pecking order never helped him, however I'm not sure much will change being at West Coast with their midfield.

Ive always got a bit of a soft spot for shaz - he singlehandedly tried to spark something in the 2015 gf - when the rest of the team looked like deer in the headlights

But yeah collingwood 1 eagles 0

ALLTHOUGH

We then delisted shaz and drafted another player and im certain that player was the difference in 2018 so seeing as we won the granny we won the trade

So ner

/politician logic

strange bump.

That said, Wellingham a capable medium level type.

And a member of an extremely prestigious and enviable group of men...
Hopefully we add quite a few more new members this spring.

I liked him up until that gutless snipe on Kade Simpson in 2012.

Reminded me a bit of Milburn's bump on Silvagni.

It was one of the more sickening sights of a concussed player I can remember in all the time I've been watching footy.
