Toast Hawthorn have headf***ed everyone

I know we say that a lot about our AFL media, but...listening to him on SEN, he really is a deadset halfwit.

Luckily, they have trained him to read out odds at short notice, otherwise he'd probably be stacking the shelves at Woolworths every night
You are kind. I was thinking more the stickers on the fruit is his level.

A few of our posters have said the same. We have had our share of Patton’s vickeries though
Even recently we haven't been all home runs. Cooper Stephens and DGB were some recruiting blunders.

I think we've done well though to trade for and bring in free agents that will be best 23 players not depth (though that might come into it later like Cheney, Simpkin etc did) And we've found some gems with late picks which many clubs don't.

We've had 4 recent top 10 picks and are looking like we have 3 good players from that.

first the hawks were MAYBE lucky with the small forwards
Now they are lucky with who they ended up recruiting

This club is just so lucky 😛👍

from a lemon sucking Cats plonker

I've got no doubt that if we did land either of McKay or Esava, they would be better players than what they are now. Its not luck . Just look at how Barass openly said he had to change and learn how to play to the Hawks system

Whereas as I’m of a different opinion. Esava was mediocre at the cats, that do have a good system in place, but has only occasionally showed glimpses, but mostly was never a good player.

Both Mackay’s have always been average that relies on their height to get them through.

My opinion is neither Mackay or Esava have the work ethic to improve. It was definitely bullets dodged.

Esava was always going to Port

We were never a chance of landing him (thank God)

McKay thankfully chose the BummersView attachment 2259793
we were also never a serious chance of getting McKay, his desire was always Essendon (he was also a Ess supporter) and we just ensured Essendon paid top dollar in the process.

And out the other side of that equation popped the unpolished diamond Mass. What luck again.

Dylan Shiel is another big bullet dodged. Two firsts the Bombers gave up from memory. Currently they have no idea where to play him.
Reserves is probably the best bet.

They are trying to hide him but they are that bad he is exposed anywhere they put him.

Reserves would be his best spot but they have so much in-fighting that The Hanger would get burnt to the ground after what they paid for him

IMO releasing Martin from the HBF was the right move, he's a gun and kicks goals from the wing. He should play there and across the HFF.

But I reckon Scott was being too smart for his own good in replacing him with Shiel. The defensive side of the game has never been a strength, and whilst he has (had?) line-breaking speed his kicking is poor at the very best.

Its a moot point, but id trust Sams and the recruiting teams collective opinion over yours. In any case , weve got the defenders we need.

The ludicrous freekickhawthorn meme is obviously born of envy. Hawthorn is by far the most successful team of the last 60 years and opposition supporters need to justify their own teams' failure to achieve the premiership tally of the Hawks. It can't be that Hawthorn achieved this success due to abililty and determination: they must have had help from the officials.

The facts show that Hawthorn has had a terrible run from the umpires over the last fifteen years or so. This table of free kick differential from 2019-2023 provides empirical evidence that Hawthorn is second from the bottom of the free kick table.

There were some Richmond supporters at a Hawks Vs Tigers game last year bleating that the Hawks only achieved the threepeat because of the umpires. Here's the freekick table from 2012-2017.

Definitely. More specifically it was born of rounds 3-5 of the 2016 season where we won 3 games by 3 point margins.

Round 3 v Bulldogs we won with a young Sicily kicking a final minute goal. I can’t recall a controversial free that went our way but there were some that blamed Sicily for Bob Murphy doing his knee in that late marking contest.

Round 4 v Saints they felt hard done by because the umpires called a series of 8m kicks from their kick out from goal play-on that lead to a turnover and goal against. Clear evidence of an umpiring conspiracy and not at all symptomatic of the slow and boring game plans St Kilda were known for.

Round 5 v Adelaide was the clincher. A 50-50 call in front of Adelaide’s goal late in the game didn’t fall their way. The ball ended up going down the other end where Puopolo was awarded a free kick on goal when he was clearly infringed late. Ignore the fact he’d already marked it anyway and should have been given a 50m penalty.

Everyone was sick of Hawthorn after just completing the threepeat. People were highly invested in seeing us drop off. I genuinely believe those 3 close wins broke the psyche of many who had to convince themselves that there was an umpiring conspiracy.

[emoji817] this was the origin of it all and has clouded everyone in to this belief since that we get favourable umpiring

People lost their minds over that Puopolo one but he had actually marked the ball anyway. The free kick was there, but also completely inconsequential. It's so weird and dumb that people hold onto this

It’s textbook confirmation bias now. Just go browse through the main board gameday threads of any of our last 3 games.

The level of mental gymnastics at play would sweep the gold medals at the head****ed olympics.

Was one of Puopolo best games. Mark every day and especially under current 2025 interpretations

We also were getting murdered from the umps that game. Working twice as hard for every call etc. Remember when the whistle blew and everyone looked to the ump expecting a free against because of the vibe of the game

I have been thinking about free kicks and how every team has their supporters tied up in knots about them.

Free kicks and free kick hawthorn

Just an example

I reckon the attention we received re free kicks in 2016 came home to roost in that final against the Bulldogs where they got away with utter murder.
I'm sure the whole #freekickhawthorn nonsense subconsciously influenced lineball umpiring decisions that game.
Our tackling went unrewarded big time for much of the night. Dogs ultimately too good - but one of the most frustrating games I've ever been to.

I don't ever bother reading the game day threads on the main board any more.

Not matter what the game, bitching about umpiring accounts for 90% of the posts.
& then there’s 90% whinging about commentators

& 90% whinging about our players &/or our game plan

In other words the game day thread is just a cluster**** of whinging
