Our midfield looked stacked before injury bit hard. Phillipou looked ready to burst out and be a dominant mid off his end to 2024. Macrae added another dominant extractor. Paddy Dow, Zones and Hunter Clark as depth. Garcia another year older and pushing up. Guys like Wilson looking like they could move inside.

It only takes a couple of injuries to make a strong line look weak. Pretty much every line has had critical injuries this season. Battle and Howard out of the back 6 bit us hard. Marshall struggling to impact and midfield decimation hurt there and King going down after moving on Membrey has stuffed forward structures. Sometimes adversity finds a few gems and fast tracks a few.

Despite the negativity Hammer looks a high end tall back. Garcia has more exposure than would have been expected and Sharman has played in his best role. Plenty of others like LOC have shown a bit and been fast tracked.
Agreed

Similarly, a couple of new recruits can exponentially improve the team too

If we can land another top 10 pick, Aleer, TDK, Bergman, and a couple of depth pieces then I think we’ll spike fast with the return of King and hopefully a full season of Pou. Also another pre-season for our young crop with the likes of Wilson Hugo Hastie Collard all entering 3rd-year breakout territory

We’d have to be very poor to miss out on the 8

Can’t see us holding our first rounder if we were to get Aleer and Bergman.
Aleer should be a 2nd rounder

Port traded out of this year so probably don’t rate the crop as much. Obviously things can change with the development of the U18s. Ultimately depends how Port rate us next year and whether they think there’s more value in a F1

If we trade away our current or future first-round pick both likely to be top 10, for Aleer, a VFL player, and Bergman, who’s only shown promise in one midfield game, we risk repeating the same mistakes of the Ratten era. In five years, we could be regretting it as Port has a Caleb Serong, Rozee, Butters type talent while we’re still searching for a genuine star midfielder.

We should have a complete ban on trading our first rounder until we have moved into the contending space. Only exception being to nab a star player like Crows with Rankine or Geelong with Bailey Smith. Aleer and Bergman don't fit the bill, I'm sorry.

There is no midfield depth problem. It's elite quality.

Yep, we have plenty of mature C-graders in Steele, Clark, Jones, Dow and Carroll. Right now Windy is at that level as well but may progress. Garcia and Box currently sit around that level as well but should improve considerably.

I think Steele has been better the last three weeks, but he's still not outstanding. In 2020-21 and parts of 2022 and 2023 he was outstanding.

Also, he's the captain and we're not dropping the captain. It's just not happening. The discussion as to whether he should be captain is a different one.

He's been improving gradually since back from injury. Personally I've been very disappointed with his form but I also wouldn't rule out him continuing to improve and being pretty strong after the bye. And there's definitely no-one to play in front of him at the moment anyway.

I didn't quite get us taking on Carroll, but i guess they didn't know that Garcia would step it up so much, and they didn't know Boxhall and Trav would be ready to go from the getgo.
As it stands , it made no difference, Carroll has hardly been sighted , and Dow has been very unfortunate. How bad would we look if Garcia hadn't stepped up?

We’re not winning squat until we get some stars into the middle.

Phillipou, Wilson, Trav, Nas, Owens, Windy, Tauru, Garcia + NGA Fincher / 2025 FRDP is a really lovely young core, stoked to have them.

And we have some strong mid 20s players who are potential top liners IMO. Higgins, King, Sharman, hopefully Clark and Henry, Stocker.

The pieces for a good side are there - however, in team sports you tend to see time and time again that it takes real star power and leadership to truly unlock a sides potential to that nth degree. In AFL, that’s typically in the midfield.

Assuming Phillipou comes on (he’s as good a a prospect as any), I think we need at least one other leader / midfielder star player to go with him, in a similar age demographic. I don’t see that player on our list, yet. I do see a tonne of potential top line role players tho, like a Tauru, a Nas, a King. But the engine room need a tune up and we all know it. Just my 2c.

Nas is not a role player - he’s an out and out star. If we retain him - which I’m relatively confident we will - he’ll likely be an A-grade midfielder alongside Phillipou

King at full fitness is also a star especially when he kicks straight

Who knows about Tauru but his ceiling is on par with Pou imo. Was seen as one of the more raw prospects of his draft crop and almost made his debut 6 weeks into his first season. If that’s raw, then imagine his peak

Macrae is elite. Phillipou has elite potential. Then we have depth and developing. Steele has been a close enough to A grade. Hopefully he can have a revival. Plenty of others have fallen away and come good again. Even Cripps looked done a few years back and Ollie Wines was absolutely cooked.

Windhager still has potential to be a very good Steele level player. Phillipou, Garcia both tracking very well. Jones, Clark and Dow all uneven C to B graders who can star or stall.

Not many sides carry more than a couple of elite mids. We probably need P{Phillipou to step up to an elite level and hope that one of the kids can develop in time for Macrae to step aside. Keep adding drafted kids and look for a few bargains. Collingwood stacked their midfield with recycled talent and it looks dominant around a couple of elite talents.

Carroll was the best player in our VFL side before getting injured. Looked like a pure injury cover player. He's more of an outside mid than an inside extractor.

Losing Nas's outside game is a loss though. I'd rather him in space where he can set up the play.

IMO Macrae is just under elite at this stage of his career. Never a top-notch kick, his elite period was the essentially five seasons he was a 30+ disposals per game guy. He's at 28 now, just below elite IMO for accumulators.

Our best, most realistic chance in my view for St Kilda to get an elite mid is Pou becomes a burst, front-of-stoppage beast. The draft has been picked clean by unfair entitlements. Free agency is not proving productive enough for us.

A big part of the problem is that we are an old and young list. The middle age bracket is bare bones. The guys that would usually be stepping into their most productive and consistent phase are not there.

Owens has taken a huge step forward in his 4th year which is a bit ahead of schedule but that's the main issue right now.

Our best can look insane like the first half against Geelong and our worst can look uncompetitive like against the Dogs.

We need all our best and most experienced fit and in form to be a very good side right now and for a long time injury has hurt our momentum.

He hasn't been dropped because despite him having a down year, he's still a top 2 midfielder for us.
I’d prefer to see them be forced to play Owens in the mid, or get Wilson in there. Plenty of our young players are deemed to be future mids, but rarely get any experience there.

If Steele isn’t playing well, put him in the VFL for confidence, and give someone else a shot in there.

Macrae is easily sat on now. With no-one else able to share the load, too much is falling on his shoulders. A couple of mids stepping up would let him get his 30 touches again.

Which is my biggest issue. Nobody should be above being omitted for form reasons.

It’s nothing against Steele personally, but being an automatic selection every week is silly.

Stacked ,, Macrae is the only proven A grader , Pou is very promising but the rest you name are just GOP's , We are miles off being a stacked Midfield
