Bit too sensible a post for this thread i'd have thought

Losing Nas's outside game is a loss though. I'd rather him in space where he can set up the play.
But it heavily improves our front half game with a goal-kicking mid

Also gives Hastie and Arie opportunities to develop if they are considered a part of our future

Webster - Aleer/Caminiti - Wilkie
Hastie - Tauru - Sinclair
Wood - Pou - Wilson
Higgins - Sharman - Hall/Henry
Marshall/Butler - King - Owens
TDK/Marshall - Macrae - NWM
Hill Steele Stocker/Bergman Windy Garcia

VFL: Byrnes, Travaglia, LOC, Collard, Boxshall, Arie, Barrat

That’s a pretty good side to take us forward that has weapons from def half to midfield to fwd half

We’re not winning squat until we get some stars into the middle.

Phillipou, Wilson, Trav, Nas, Owens, Windy, Tauru, Garcia + NGA Fincher / 2025 FRDP is a really lovely young core, stoked to have them.

And we have some strong mid 20s players who are potential top liners IMO. Higgins, King, Sharman, hopefully Clark and Henry, Stocker.

The pieces for a good side are there - however, in team sports you tend to see time and time again that it takes real star power and leadership to truly unlock a sides potential to that nth degree. In AFL, that’s typically in the midfield.

Assuming Phillipou comes on (he’s as good a a prospect as any), I think we need at least one other leader / midfielder star player to go with him, in a similar age demographic. I don’t see that player on our list, yet. I do see a tonne of potential top line role players tho, like a Tauru, a Nas, a King. But the engine room need a tune up and we all know it. Just my 2c.
Travaglia's pretty raw but the hope is he becomes that inside/outiside player. Has the physical tools for sure if he gets the most out of his body. The fact that he's already finding a heap of ball in the midfield at VFL level is really promising.

People will say NAS or Wilson but I think they'll both be top liners in other positions.

Anyone know if we are into Tsatas? Could be relatively cheap pick up and upside is there if he can get his disposal improved. A lot of the top mids have had the same issue in the past. Also fits the age profile we are targeting.

A lot of the top mids don’t kick the ball like an u10

I'd want Butters and Bergman. We can give Butters the money Nas would have got plus extra cream if needed.
There would only be 1 trade I’d consider. It involves 0 draft picks and I know it won’t be offered.

Draper + Curtin for Nas.

I don't mind going with JSOS rather than Aleer, actually. Doesn't cost draft capital and can be phased out when Tauru/Barrat are ready. The only cost would be the cries of nepotism
The value in Aleer is his potential. It’s right up there. How good is he right now? No idea, hard to gauge because of the key backs he sits behind.

BUT in our position we are more than a decent key back away from contending. We need star level talent.

Swing for it.

His disposal isn't VFL level standard

Macrae is easily sat on now. With no-one else able to share the load, too much is falling on his shoulders. A couple of mids stepping up would let him get his 30 touches again.
Yep, we got Macrae to help Steele, now he is in the exact position Steele was in. We need to bring in a mid or two to help Macrae and for the likes of Steele, Pou, and the B's Clark, Garcia, Dow, Carroll and Jones to contribute.

Nas is not a role player - he’s an out and out star. If we retain him - which I’m relatively confident we will - he’ll likely be an A-grade midfielder alongside Phillipou

King at full fitness is also a star especially when he kicks straight

Who knows about Tauru but his ceiling is on par with Pou imo. Was seen as one of the more raw prospects of his draft crop and almost made his debut 6 weeks into his first season. If that’s raw, then imagine his peak
Fair enough, role player too vague a term, but what I meant is that they’re a speciality player that’s not in the midfield role. Doesn’t mean they can’t be stars.

Whether or not Nas makes it as a midfielder as his go to position is another thing altogether. He’s a star yes, but a midfielder? Yet to be consistently seen if he’s more impactful there than HBF or Wing.

In an ideal world I’d rather Nas play a role around the ground and go into the middle if needed (like Sincs does), and just have more resilient midfield group.

I’d prefer to see them be forced to play Owens in the mid, or get Wilson in there. Plenty of our young players are deemed to be future mids, but rarely get any experience there.

If Steele isn’t playing well, put him in the VFL for confidence, and give someone else a shot in there.

Wilson needs to harden up if he's going to play midfield

Time to give this chat a spell. It's been done to death.
Think we'll need to deal with the fact this conversation will never go away. Particularly if Langford goes on to become a star.

"Injury-plagued St Kilda forward Max King is adamant he’ll play again in 2025, he just doesn’t know when."

“I will play again this year,” King said on Thursday.

Great news!!!
Fair enough. Club was also adamant he was in the frame for round 1.

I'll believe it when I see him run down the race on game day. Hopefully this year.

I'm not opposed to getting Aleer but if he was that good, he'd be playing. JSOS was very, very good against us and Carton fans seem to suggest that is his current standard form.

As you say, we need stars. So I say let's keep our early draft picks to find or trade for star midfielders, not to sure up our defensive stocks.

Apparently it was mentioned on Gettable that some clubs will be very annoyed with the NGA re-zoning - I have a bad feeling that we will be one of them

Apparently we're down to just the suburb of Mordialloc, and inside that only houses with even street numbers, unless the street runs north-south in which case it's odd street numbers. Meanwhile Hawthorn have everything between Mallacoota and Brighton.

Judd and Visy now getting involved with the TDK free agency.

Brown paper bags are back in the game.
Good maybe they’ll save us from ourselves, $1.7 for a ruck is an absolute joke. TDK can play and I like him but if that’s what it takes to get him to st Kilda then carlton can keep him.

Its not the ruck or even the money at this point, its what it represents. If we can't get this done, then any perception going forward of us being a destination club for young players will be permanently shattered. Finn Callaghan 2.0.

Players perceptions will only get worse and with the amount of endorsements and alternative ways to make money increasing, there will be no amount in a contract that will be enough to get anyone except blokes looking to retire in 3 years. This cannot be that hard to grasp.

The salary cap spike in the next 10 years is going to be massive so you blokes have to stop looking at this figure from the perspective of what the AFL used to be. Additionally, with Tassie coming into the league there will be a further dilution of the talent pool so genuine superstars will be worth their weight in gold.

This complaining about contract values is a bit silly when looking at the increase in revenue that the AFL is making year upon year. If someone should get paid more, its the players and not the bloated corporate suits and tiers of middle management that keep getting added year upon year.
