It's been a bit of a difficult year for Cody, but this was a strong game from him in a high pressure situation, demonstrating that he can impact when he's able to get the game on his terms. The conditions weren't ideal for a big key forward with heavy rain and wind and a slippery footy, but Cody's hands in marking contests were secure and his bodywork was a feature all game.

I hear CDT now been compared to Thilthorpe, but Curtin looks like Thilthorpe lite, he's got a massive frame, will be an absolute physical beast with a few preseasons. Guess the question is whether he's fast enough for AFL level, but for me, Curtin with a second rounder seems better than CDT with a top 2 pick.

This mindset kinda worries me. Hope we don't go overboard with bringing in experienced players a la the Ken Judge era, even if they are better quality players.
The draft should still be the focus with a minimum of 4 players through there.
Taking minimal players through the draft due to a lack of spots would be a foolish move in the midst of a rebuild.
Mark Merenda doesn't like this slander

The club will definitely still look for value in the draft i don’t see us loading up on top end prospects only. Curtin definitely has some upside and is the type that could potentially play a role at AFL level. His pace and agility is his concern.

We could definitely do a lot worse than big boy Curtin if we miss out on Schubert IMO.

Everyone sleeping on him and he's in our own backyard and a likely bargain to boot.

Yes he's a big lump of a kent, but looks a natural forward, has a powerful leg, kicks bags for fun and is more mobile than Jack Williams, who does have a spot in the AFL (Unless your name is McQualter the campaigner)

Really hoping our assistance package gives us the NGA means to use pick 31/49 to use on thicc boi instead.

If he plays out of the goal square, surrounded by mobile smalls, he will be strong enough to rag doll almost any full back and either mark the ball or bring it to ground. Shanahan at CHF.

Spells in the ruck where he goes Xerri lite, and you've got a player with pick 25+

McQualter won't want Curtin in the forward line kicking goals because he has Archer spraying them all over the place.

I would think that IF McQualter had Curtin and ShaHANDS in the forward line togther, then Archer might be playing elsewhere... just saying.

An early look at a bottom ager who's become an important cog in the Ranges midfield machine through the second half of the season. Jordan Knapp is a balanced inside/outside midfielder, undersized but with some Jagga Smith like qualities in his ability to find the footy at stoppage and navigate traffic to extract it. He's excellent on the spread, has strong disposal skills to set up teammates and is capable of hitting the scoreboard himself.

You'd bloody hope so. Whether it's Curtin or someone else, the sooner we add another promising KPF to develop the quicker we can punt Reid into a position that suits him better.

Right now he's an absolute shocking forward, it's just stalling his development. Need to get him into the ruck or as a KPD asap IMO.

You mean the formative years of a premiership tilt?

That may well be the case as far as a forward goes, however Archer is tracking beautifully in the progression to become a genuine #1 ruckman.

The new ruck rules will be the making of him.

Curtin is definitely not in shape, he is nowhere near as quick or as agile as last year. I think he needs a lot of conditioning and to drop his weight and he's an AFL talent.

Whether he had some off season issues or OP or similar he certainly hasn't been the same player this year.

He’s had some issues largely beyond his control.

Curtin was the most exciting prospect for me coming into the year, last year he was a beast at CHB. He was quick, agile and had great aggression and calm under pressure. Literally a general at half back, I think that's his best position.

He looks so different this year, cumbersome and way off it.
Definitely needs to get his speed and agility back and I'm confident there's a good player there.

Rival teams, at this stage, believe if West Coast received Pick 2 as free agency compensation for losing Oscar Allen, the Eagles would use the first two picks to draft Duursma and Duff-Tytler, possibly amid bids on club-tied talent.

Interesting article. Saying teams after the first team picks might go needs based so some unexpected players might jump up.

Duursma. Tick.
CDT. Big ****en question mark based on what we can do with out later picks and moving up. If we can get a priority pick or two, plus other picks for Ryan/Chesser so that we can move up to the Port pick from GC, while keeping the Hawks pick, and getting two good mids (including a hopefully sliding Sharp), then it's great. It's a big IF though.

The media reporting I find interesting in that it seems almost a given we’ll take Duursma and Duff-Tytler

There’s also very little, if any, discussion around clubs trying to trade up to draft either one - a curious comparison to the almost hysterical push for West Coast to trade pick one when it was going to be Harley

Not commenting on whether that’s what we should do, only that it feels like a fait accompli that we will in the media at least

Very rare that the VAFL media get it right with what we do, in fact I would go further and suggest that when they link us with a certain player it usually mean we don't pick him.

Regarding our Draft intentions I will say this that over the years we characteristically have:
  • Historically we have been very good at keeping our real intentions close to our chest.
  • Played cloak and daggers , smoke and mirrors as well as any other Club around our draft targets.

Now they may be correct this time, so it cant be totally dismissed, IMO Duursma is the best prospect in this draft so thats by no means a stretch from the media to suggest that we take him first , after pick #1 however, I still think there is a lot more to still play out between now and draft night.

Agreed, all hypotheticals atm.

No actual intel that a team is keen to move up but the Blues thing last year happened late and due to Hawks trading the pick ect.

Cal has mentioned it as an option for the Bombers but that was more ‘would they’ rather then ‘they will try to’

In all reality, Essendon is the only club I see wanting to trade up. Neither the Drug Rats or the Eagles use the media for signalling deals early and with clarity on FA compensation about a month away with Oscar and Draper, you don’t discuss openly about hypothetical picks.

On top of that, both Merrett and Ridley are looking to exit the club. HUN are reporting Hawks would give up pick 9, F1, FF1 for Zach and a F2.

We also are awaiting a decision from the request for assistance and won’t know until GF time.

That means draft hands are really up in the air. Draper band 1 and Merrett a Hawk could see Essendon with picks 5 6 7 10 plus 4 future R1 picks. Do they use some of that in a Curnow deal (it may be for Curnow or to facilitate the deal)? Would they go again for Harley with a Godfather deal offering 5 6 7 and 10? Sillier things have happened.

Fox sell subscriptions and the HUN sell papers and subscriptions. Essendon and Carlton fans are passionate so articles like these are the norm.

Meanwhile, I can live with Duursma at 1 but I would not touch CDT with pick 6. He is not the best ruckman in the draft, he is not the best KPF in the draft and he is no midfielder. He is a shorter version of Peter Wright who is good below the knees. I trust Massey to make the right call.
