Why are David King, Jack Riewoldt and Jon Ralph doubling down on the "Starcevich v Elliot" absence of free? Starcevich had eyes on the ball and flushed the ball out of Elliot's hands without obstructing Elliot's face, chopping his arms, or hitting him unduly in the front of body/face.

Not only was it not a free kick, it was an exemplary spoil running with the flight of the ball.

Can you please explain how it should have been paid as a free kick? I'm legitimately curious. I also admit I am not 100% on the rule. But to me, eyes on ball, flushed the ball free from Elliot's hands, no choppng of the arms, no obvious hit on Elliot's face or front of body = no free kick = great spoil.

Actually if he hits the ball and the arm chop comes after that it's collateral to the Initial contest. They don't pay free kicks if you make contact with the ball or at least they shouldn't. It's no different to a tackle in soccer. Your taking the legs out but if you get the ball clean it's not a free kick.

I don't agree. It could've rightly been called a free kick but I think it was very much at the low end of front on impact and Starcevic's eyes never deviated from the football and in the last ten minutes of a big final I've seen umpires turn a blind eye to far more blatant free kicks. I won't begrudge Collingwood fans will feel some sense of frustration with the adjudication, but I think it could be considered a legitimate spoil and play on if the closest umpire saw the contest from certain angles.
