With Aleer out of the picture...

We have 38 contracted, including Spargo.

Assuming no cat b's, our maximum list size of 42 (senior + rookies).

Payne, Phillips, Harvey, Maley and Tucker are still OOC.

So one or two could still get a reprieve, depending on whether we count a rookie upgrade as one of our three mandatory draft inclusions.

I would be keen to keep Payne/Harvey. Maley would be a maybe. Tucker and Phillips are gone.

Wonder what put us off Aleer
It has to be on observed form in the match against the Giants and feedback from the playing group.

Darling (33 years old) dined out on Aleer for 9 touches and kicked 3.2 in 90% game time. Aleer racked up 5 touches in 89% game time.

Plenty of average backmen can look OK when you have the likes of Taylor, Himmelberg taking the other 2 talks. If we were not into him before the Ross Lyon double back flip, then kudos for us still not being into him after that.

I didn't mind getting Whitlock, we shouldn't have done the Daniels trade, then we could have got him with our 2nd round pick... or one of the other KPP prospects.
Yeh agree that's why I emphasised machinations not the specific talent identification of Whitlock himself.

Tarryn Thomas cleared to be picked up as a DFA. Anyone going take him?

I think brady is conjuring a sam frost move...

He's a superb athlete capable of great spoils but after several years in the system he still finds himself out of position a lot and his 1v1 work is poor.

Like you said, its possibly a different story if you have Taylor and Buckley locking down the opposition's biggest forward threats.

Wonder what put us off Aleer

Giant's valuation?
His contract request?
There was talk at one point that he really didn't want to leave GWS, just the St Kilda offer was too good to refuse
There's been mention of an ankle injury
We don't really rate him

I'd be curious.

I think it's delaying the inevitable by 12 months for any of them if we keep them.

Throw up some options for debate. Who would you have liked to us to have gotten and how would you have done it?
Its a good question. But realistically we're in the business of winning football matches. The problem is, we are so constrained by academies, father and sons, our own father/sons who choose to play for academies, constant shifting of rules (think sander's), and free agency and on top of that a "good citizen" culture. Now given we're bottom 4 forever and a day, we don't have a first round draft pick, and no-one (except Spargo bless him) wants to come, we either believe enough in the natural improvement and growth of our list (the captain doesn't) OR, we need to face reality and take chances on some of the players with riskier off field characters. JUH and Oliver in this trade period, Stengle in the past, and perhaps just perhaps Hollands in this one. Short conditional contracts, zero tolerance for f&%kwittery.

I have been indifferent on Rawlings to date but if all we do to improve our list is bring Spargo in and potentially lose Simpkin, he needs to ** off. Derkson, Aleer, Fahey all available and would probably add value immediately. It sounds like all we've done is sit back and play with ourselves while other clubs make moves. We need some ***ing ambition here, there's just no sign of anything useful coming out of the list management function except for locking players away for long periods - that's only a quarter of the function - the others being talent identification, draft, list balance/and overall management and ****ing trade. I can't say any of those are travelling along acceptably. Despite the state of our list, we somehow are struggling for list spots. Despite no one being interested in Derkson since Dees pulled out and us having a legitimate need (Aleer to a lesser extent), we're an absolute dead fish during the trade period and got rid of our only leverage in a top 3 pick last year. What the * is going on? There's 5 posters in this BF forum who'd do a better job on a volunteer basis. **** me.
As many have mentioned before, just look at what we've brought in from other clubs over the past decade.

Off the top of my head: Williams, Hrovat, Polec, Pittard, Corr, Tucker, Logue, Fisher, Stephenson, Josh Walker, Alex Morgan, Hartung, Atu, Campbell all either off the list or still clogging it. For all of the shit Daniel cops (some of it justified, some of it excessive) he's actually been one of the better recruits of recent years.

I guarantee if we picked up any of the players you listed there'd be posters on here whining about them all of next year and given our recent record it would probably be for good reason. Our young players seem far more capable than anyone we've recruited from other teams so I'm happy to keep pursuing that instead of melting down because we didn't recruit Jai Serong or something
