Coach Men's Senior Coach: Brad Scott

Basically what I am asking is if we could hire somebody like Burgess as a website designer and then have him help out at training.
Or find a role at the club for a kid who missed the draft to be the marketing / social media manager....or something that fits their skill set. Plus also VFL contract.

Similar to what we did with Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti
And they could also help out at training as an extra in drills.

Or maybe a former AFL player someone like Dylan Buckley - works in social media / marketing team and also helps out at training a few hours a week.

To me, it's more about girth than age. I don't want to see the lint in your belly button as you wear a jumper to the footy from when you were 17 and 85kg, but now you're 40 and 120kg.🤢
Agree which is why you buy a 5xl 🙂
I have a couple of jumpers but they are larger size that I wear over a T shirt or light jumper every now and then.

How old is too old to still go to the footy jumper?

I do enjoy seeing an overweight middle aged man wearing a bare-armed woollen Nubrik. A bit of foam coming out the side of the mouth screaming his own language towards the umps. What a time to be alive

Has Jeremy McGovern said what he'll be doing next year? Sees the game brilliantly, would be a great get as an assistant?
Havnt heard anything, not a bad call

I think hes still getting a payout for next year, from memory was still contracted, so may not be able or want to do anything

Pretty entrenched in WA

not really fussed about win/loss but would really love to see a consistent application of the game plan/ball movement style.
I think he gets a mulligan for 2024 as hard to get any consistency with the ongoing injury disruptions.
In 2023 Im less forgiving of the pivot back to bad habits in the 2nd half of season and if there is a repeat of that then Im not sure if he is getting through to the players (Im cautiously optimistic he will have some more success though with the continual list overhaul).

What does he need to show/do to keep his job for 2027?

Can he survive a 4-6 win - 70-80% season?

The club was pretty clear about where the list is at and that the plan was to look to the draft and bring in youth, not try to top up and chase the bottom half of finals spots. I don't think it should be a W:L driven season result. Unless he loses the playing group I don't think he should be at any risk.

Of course, there will undoubtedly be some very vocal parts of the supporter base that won't be onboard with what that looks like. They'll rant and rave about 20 years since a finals win, as though that's Brads fault. Same way the sky was falling when we finished the season poorly after an almost unprecedented level of injuries to senior players.

Continue to bring young guys in as they're ready, look to consolidate via the draft for another season since we're likely to have another top 5 or so selection and there's a decent chance Merrett gets traded, build the culture off the back of competitive young guys.

Key things to me will be the performance and consistency we see from the young guys, things like:

Caddy & Roberts are going in to their 3rd seasons, can they start playing more major roles more consistently?
Bryan & Hayes returning from ACLs and getting some senior games building towards a full 2027.
Tsatas showing he can be a best 22 contributor.
How many of 2024 draft cohort of Kako, Clarke, Johnson, ADW, Nugyen, Unwin and Gerryn can become regular senior players?
Can Perkins show he's more than a bit part player?
Can Reid stay fit to show just how talented he is?
Can Archer May be that big forward presence we're hoping?
What does our 2025 draft cohort bring to the table?

There's so many young guys on the list with potential, who shows that they're going to really be a player?

Agree it is more for warmth.
T-shirt with a Guernsey over the top and then a jumper/jacket to pop on later if it gets cold or is a night game.
I have quite a few options Small (when played footy as a teenager, its snug), Medium(when played footy as a young adult was training guernsey), large gifted and Xtra Large won.

Hope so because with one of the youngest and least experienced lists in the league that's the absolute best case scenario.

If the club thinks sacking the coach on the basis of win/loss results after embarking on a rebuild is a good idea then we really do have no hope.

we've seen this movie before though, really hope the current guys in charge can continue to ignore the outside noise!

for me

Play Caddy, Roberts, Sharp, Johnson, Clarke, Nguyen every game they are fit, but give them a week off if need a break/overloaded (don't want to break them).

only play Guelfi and Gresham if in form
leave contract talks off the table.
If Hussein dominating the 2's bring him in, provided fitness up to scratch for his role.

Look to debut Sharp (Rd 1), Gerryn, Robey, Farrow as soon as possible.

Make Cox and Jones perform in the 2's before considering brining them in to AFL side.

have senior player performing near their best week in/out - Ridley, Parish, Langford, McGrath, Wright, McKay etc like Merrett does.

I hear that, but if he's playing Jones off the wing and backs in Perkins and Gresham while they plodder around I'll be a tad annoyed.

Yes, from my couch I think giving the youth plenty of AFL exposure is an important benchmark.

How much exposure? I'm not really sure. The first year players in particular have a lot of development to do to get their bodies adjusted to the rigours of professional footy and it's probably not the end of the world if they spend a fair bit of time in the VFL despite good performances

For me personally a big bugbear in the past is the coaching team starts the year with a set plan/team structure but then when player X is injured or player Y is out of form instead of replacing them with a like for like replacement (who may be a first or second year player) they rejig the team structure to fit in the most senior players playing in the twos and we end up trying to fit square pegs into round holes instead of having consistency in team structure/style.

To be fair I think this improved a bit last year though and is probably as much to do with the list build under dodoro vs rosa.

I think there's also a lot of 'hidden' stuff that goes into it like fitness, training loads, attitude, injury niggles etc too

From the cheap seats it's made to look like a simple decision like flicking a switch but behind the scenes there's more that goes into it

Also they are possibly the best prepared 18 year olds we have had in a while.

Think Sharp can do a Kako and play from the get go

Robey and Sharp can be like Roberts, put down some good VFL form, then get opportunity and stay in.

Kondo + El-Achkar are probably waiting for injury opportunity and they will benefit from playing VFL. But won't rule them out of a debut. Kondo looks like a good side, Hussein will need to get fitness up.

The Irishman is a project player, so don;t expect much at all this year, mostly VFL you would imagine, hopefully doesnt need as much as McBride and more like Mckenna. But he looks a good side and is fit and has been playing against men, its more so, getting to know our structures and the intricacies of the AFL competition.
