Our team in 2014 was not small in the slightest, Hawthorn were simply too good on the day and we went in pretty cocky.

Geelong in 2022 we went in sore and beat up (physically and mentally after our prelim against Collingwood), got our balance wrong at team selection then were absolutely shell shocked on the day.

We have proven you can win matches with smaller more disposal oriented team in big matches (Qualifying and Prelim finals in 2024 are perfect examples of us taking down bigger opponents). We just haven't turned up on the biggest day for reasons that are outside our list size.

That being said, in 2026 I think we are on track to be a "larger" team than we have in the past.

  • McDonald has put on a fair chunk of size and gives us a better bail out option.
  • Curnow is a BIG in in lots of ways, but gives us the ability to play more direct.
  • McCartin has put on a good chunk of size since 24
  • Our midfielders are coming closer to their peak and are no longer as small (Warner, Gulden and Rowbottom should all be more broad and mature in shoulder).
  • Mills going back into the midfield should give us that larger body we need in there to ideally free up Heeney a bit

We will not be as big as some larger mature teams (Geelong, WB and Collingwood in particular) but we have different strengths that they cannot replicate either (Not many teams can match our total speed around the ground or footskills for instance).
I appreciate a lot of the good sense you make, and I know there’s often little to be gained by raking over the coals of the past, BUT I think Hawthorn took ‘unsociable’ way over the line in 2014. And we’ve continued to be too ‘nice’. I don’t want to support a team of cheats (Western Bulldogs 2016, that’s you) nor a team of thugs (Hawthorn 2014, that’s you), but I want to support a team ready to take up the fight AND play fast, skilful footy. I hope we incorporate some form of martial arts in our training and build confidence that we can be harder than any opposition wants to play.

My lasting memory of that 14 GF was the Hawks absolutely physically dominating us. They hit us very hard.
It wasn't thuggery , we had big heads and K J said we will out tackle them with over 120 tackles like we did against the Cats in the Prelim

I don't recall that, but if so then it is eerily similar to what happened in 2024!
We smashed the Cats in that Prelim with over 120 tackles and KJ said we'll do it to the Hawks , Clarko put that up in the Hawks rooms in the lead up and on the day . They denied us the ball like the Lions did and Horse did SFA

F up post of the day , thanks Nool

Gee, looks like Logan's really built his upper body up.

It takes time to build size, Logan has always had big legs and hips so it should be fine.

Sydney have been very happy with his development (and his probably another 2 years away from finishing to fill out as well).

Some posters on our forum are way to keen to rule players out, he kicked 37 goals as a 21 year old in 24 whilst playing a few games in defence (not to mention he was tearing apart the prelim against Port before his ankle injury).

His developing just fine and I expect will have a real breakout year this year.
