This is great.

Meanwhile Labor are encouraging foreign investors to build to rent homes and getting tax deductions for it.
Fact:

From 1 April 2025 the Albanese government banned foreign persons, including temporary residents and foreign-owned companies from buying an established dwelling in Australia.

The only excemption to this will be for investments that significantly increase housing supply. Which makes absolute sense given the critical shortage of rental housing across Australia.

I don't see anything wrong with this. Seems like good policy to me.

That hasn't been widely publicised by the media. Wonder why.

Why is it great?

Though I am amused the slumlord suddenly starts getting concerned about housing

This sounds like a dog whistle - just as there was here when Chinese investors started buying properties
the corporates who have all the properties can now sell off at a premium.. before the arse falls out of the market.

Depends what type of housing. Are there any stipulations for affordability? Or will it end up with investors going for high-end developments?

The MAGA Yanks are so, so, so stupid. They have no idea what type of American influence we consume each and every day, or how much they rely on the rest of the world for everything.

I have never protested anything in my life. If the Yanks bully Greenland and take it over, damn right I’ll be burning US flags and demanding all their bases be removed from our land. Only two nations are threatening world peace at the moment: Russia and the USA. Let them rot on the sidelines and hang out with North Korea.

Does that mean China does China things? So be it.

As for ICE, they are a symbol of their regime. The January 6 rioters are treated as martyrs, but not a woman clearing scared and running away.

All empires fall eventually. It’s about the ~70% of Americans who didn’t vote or voted against MAGA to bloody well keep their pollies in line.

Maga is finished in the 2028 election. Nothing surer.

Perhaps the Maduro capture is even an attempt by Trump to be seen "doing something" as the first year of his reign was a disaster.

I wouldn't be surprised if Trump put forward RFK or MTG as a Presidential candidate in the next election, he loves his cookers.

You’ll probably be arrested or put on a watch list by Australian police at the behest of the Trump admin. Or smeared by Australian media

I wonder if we're about to see a movement similar to what happened after George Floyd was killed.

Floyd’s murder was visually and symbolically worse. Make no mistake, the Minneapolis ICE killing was straight up murder of an innocent person, but Floyd was choked to death for 9 minutes whilst begging for his life and bystanders begging for him to be allowed to breathe.

To this day I’m not sure why the cop wasn’t convicted of first degree premeditated murder as I’ve never seen such a case of premeditated murder filmed openly in my life.

Off topic for this thread but as I see it, the big impact of this change will be on stopping temporary residents from overseas on limited visas such as students and short term workers being used as conduits for buying up established housing stock and land - which was permissible prior to April 2025. (One of the many problems associated with our universities and education sector becoming businesses that are reliant on on full fee paying foreign students on temporary immigration visas - that too is a topic for another thread).

As agreed with Parliament, the ban has a sunset clause of 31 March 2027 to enable a full evaluation of its effectiveness and to determine whether it should be extended beyond this point and if any changes are needed. In my view this sunset clause requirement should be put in place for all future tax and investment change legislation to help stop what we've seen in the past - where flawed legislation with unintended consequences (such as the Howard CGT changes) becomes almost impossible to change because of the power of the vested interests who are benefitting from it.

You can follow the wormhole for greater detail on the changes here.
