Teams which underachieved?

Have Geelong under Chris Scott under achieved?

13 finals from 15 season, 2 flags under his tenure (one in his debut season with a team that had already won a flag under Bomber).
Probably should've found another flag somewhere.

Very good finals (and dynasty run) sides (Hawthorn 2013, Richmond 2019-2020, Brisbane 2024-2025) were in the way for some of the best chances though.

Geelong 1993. Had they made the 6 they would have won it. Smashed everyone leading up to the finals. North, WCE, Bombers. Just missed out. Red hot form and a team full of stars.

Port team of the early 2000s.

Just a bit unfortunate that they had to run into the best team of the 21st century.

I think that’s a little bit ruff took one of the all time great Geelong teams to the absolute death, and literally a bad bounce from a premiership the following year against Collingwood
Yes. But it was the Ross Lyon effect as to why they lost narrowly to Geelong and the ball bouncing the wrong way against us.

The Ross Lyon kiss of death.

Not how I saw it at least in 2009. It was as though Saints wanted to defend the one goal lead heading into the last quarter. They were kept goalless in the 4Q and managed 3 behinds o e of which was a rushed behind. This from the best performed team in 2009

For such a great year the Saints shouldn't have even been there. Dogs should have got them in the prelim.

I thought we were on top for large parts of the game really should have had a decent lead heading into the last quarter, missed to many scoring opportunities throughout the middle part of the game I don’t think you can blame Lyon for that, Geelong was always going to come home hard at the end we had our chances to get it done

I agree. First half

7.7
7.1

Should have been at least 3 up at half time. Cats would have really struggled from there in those conditions.

Nah it wasnt that, we lost finals 2 years running to a vastly inferior Collingwood side is what hurt us. Whether we would have beaten Brisbane in the GF is the unknown.
You guys weren't even close in 2002 and 2003. Losing 4 times in two finals campaigns says it all. Losing twice at home first up also speaks volumes.

Nah never close.
Split H&A v Brisbane in 2001, 2002, 2003, a few of the great H&A games that many in Vic especially didn’t see because they were getting games like St Kilda v North FTA (I know as I was living there)

But nah, never good enough (retrospectively of course).

If H&A held that much weight we'd all be saying Adelaide were close last year. They weren't when it mattered and that's all anyone remembers.

Funny how minor premiers don't win the flag that much. At least since I've been watching.

11 out of the past 36 seasons only has the side that topped the ladder won the flag.

How many double chance teams went out in straight sets in the past 25 years. Would they be considered underachievers?

Then there’s no such thing as underachieving.

If you lose finals, you’re not that good, therefore you didn’t underachieve.

2025 yes.

2007 West Coast straight setted by the angry Footy Gods.

Power 2001 - 2004 the greatest underacheivers. Yes the Pies could match them 2001 -2003, their bogie side for sure. But a side spitting that much talent & rocking that well for 4 years straight had no excuses to lose at home to the Hawks, Pies & Swans in finals. If we had 3 years of Power v Lions GF's i'd say history would have been far more interesting. That loss to Sydney was both helarious for non Power supporters & incredibly sad for them at the same time.

Bro. That 2003 final againt the Swans... my Lebo mate who'd gone through every game with me, rang me late, says cant make it, for some ****edup reason, but Mum will come! So I sat with Eltufie, watching that debarcle. Good snacks but FMD!

That's gold. Port supporters looked like they were going to go on a murderous rampage after that game. If they lost the qualifying the next year..... honestly may as well of folded the club then & there.

I still think the 2014 Sydney team was a good team, they just shat themselves on Grand Final day.
I thought both Hawthorn and Port Adelaide would have thumped them that day, just so happened to be Hawthorn. 2016 is more so the one that they really should have won.
