For hawthorn I’d have John Kennedy Snr and Leigh Matthew’s as definites.

Then you could make an argument for Tuck, Dunstall, Hudson or Hodge based on your preferences. If Mitchell has some premiership success as a coach then he is probably in the conversation too.

I wouldn't have Lance Franklin in the Hawthorn one (when I saw his name I wondered if it was a most talented list, but can see Sheedy, Norm Smith and others are in the list, highlighting it is indeed the most important figures for a club, as a "Mt Rushmore" should be).

Franklin was obviously awesome but ultimately played less than 200 games for the Hawks, is not in our top 4 goalkickers and 'only' played in 2 flags.

I think an appropriate replacement should be chosen from:

John Kennedy Snr- 4 best and fairests as a player, captained the club to its first ever finals series (after decades of ineptitute) and 5 seasons as captain and best player during a transformative era. Took over as coach and completed the transformation from (terrible) amateur club to a professional outfit with "Kennedy's commandoes", becoming easily the fittest and most disciplined club in the league and coaching Hawthorn to it's first 3 flags over 290+ games in 2 separate stints (we were poor in between). Hawthorn TOTC coach, bronze statue of the man at our HQ and one of the first Hawthorn reps granted legend status at the AFL (Also did plenty off field over the decades post coaching and a legacy with his son and grandson).

Michael Tuck - Most Hawthorn games (426 - league record for 3 decades), most wins (league record), most Grand Finals (11 - league record), most premierships (7 - league record). Captained the club to 4 flags. MUCH better player than some people remember - captained Victoria, multiple Carnival era AA's and Team of the Years, runner up in the B&F to the greatest player of all time 6 times, etc, etc.

Sam Mitchell - 300+ games, 5 B&F's, 4 flags and the most consistently elite player during our 3-peat, 4 flag era. Brownlow medallist (top 3, 4 times), captained a flag and one of the greatest finals performers of all time. Holds lots of Hawthorn statistical records (Most Brownlow votes - 3rd all time, most 30+ disposal games, most disposals, most clearances, etc, etc). Now coaching the club (with promising early signs).
Peter Hudson.

I respect these choices, but the Freo Mt Rushmore that the fans (me, anyway) are crying out to see would be:
Cliiiiive,
Scott Chisholm,
Dale Kickett (to be shown in an action pose thumping a faceless West Coast player)
Jeff "The Real Wiz" Farmer

And for bonus Freo content, Ryan Crowley to appear on the North Melbourne one, shadowing Brent Harvey.

Clive a candidate, icon.

Probably the greatest Mt. Rushmore of any club.

That Bombers quartet takes some beating. Simon Madden would also sit comfortably in many clubs' best.

I dunno. Obviously I'm a Hawthorn supporter but I reckon....

Leigh Matthews > Dick Reynolds
Peter Hudson > John Coleman
Jason Dunstall > James Hird
Lance Franklin > Bill Hutchison.

Different players from different eras so hard to compare, especially the last one but I reckon the Hawthorn player wins at least 3 of the 4 match ups here?

It's an interesting debate.

Hard to argue with your position, particularly given as good as Coleman was (and I am a massive fan), he unfortunately didn't have the longevity of others.

(Though Buddy didn't have the longevity at Hawthorn of others).

Yeah, that's an interesting one cos Hudson suffers from the same fate.

Also, none of us were actually there to see Coleman.

All we have to compare from that era is: Goals (primary comparison tool given both full forwards), Brownlow votes and team success (B&F's/flags). No other stats or awards at that time to utilise.

On the goal front, Hudson kicked more from more games, at a higher average.

In the end, Hudson played most of the season 6 times and Coleman 5 times.

Hudson had easily the best season with 150 goals (Coleman's best 120).
Huson went 140+ twice, Coleman 0
Hudson went 120+ 4 times, Coleman 1
Hudson went 110+ 5 times in 6 seasons, Coleman twice in 5 seasons.

Coleman averaged over 6 goals a game in 2 seasons, Hudson averaged 6+ in 6 seasons (not overly meaningful since some of those 'seasons' was just 1 game).

Coleman won the flag twice, Hudson once.
Hudson won the B&F twice, Coleman once.
Hudson won the VFL leading goalkicker 4 times, Coleman 5 times.
Hudson averages nearly double the Brownlow votes per game.

Not much to split them really (when taking eras into account) but on totality, I'd have Hudson's contribution ahead. As you say, a real shame neither got to play 250+ games in the VFL.

18 home and away games when Coleman was playing, 22 when Hudson was playing.

Could be a factor :)

Not really (Hudson tended to miss games during those years). Of the 11 seasons of 16+ games they played between them, the top 5 for goal average were:

1. Hudson 1970 (6.64 goals per game)
2. Hudson 1968 (6.58)
3. Hudson 1969 (6.32)
3. Coleman 1950 (6.32)
5. Hudson 1971 (6.25)

Aside from 1950, Coleman didn't have another season of 5.8+ goals per game (noting a different era).

Hey hey....I did actually see Coleman play (as a 5 year old sitting on my grandfathers knee in the Ryder stand at Vicci Park.)
It pissed down rain most of the day but we won and Coleman didn't kick too many....and I saw Bobby Rose that was all I really cared about.

That is such a cool memory, thanks for sharing.
