All this hype around Campbell Gray is interesting. Balta’s best position is without doubt in the back half, but if we have Gibcus, Miller, Gray, Broad and even Trainor all capable of playing there and taking KPF then we have a decision to make…

Honestly, I’d be tempted to put Balta down as second ruck to support an aging Nank now that there’s 5 on the bench. He would challenge most other rucks with his athleticism and ability to pressure as that power athlete when the balls on the deck. We know Yze at least entertained this two years ago.

We have enough experience down there without Balta IMO and I’d 100% prefer putting games into Gray than Ryan for example

Can see the club easing Gibcus back into seniors, he has had so much time off the last thing that club needs is for him to cop another long-term injury because his workload wasnt managed properly.

Reckon he will be rested a few times during the year so Gray will probably fill that void. Also, injuries / suspensions happen during a year so can see Gray playing if Broad etc are also out for a handful of games. Trainor is another one who will play AFL & VFL throughout the year as he is still young and maturing.

Balta in the backline is not changing in 2026, hopefully he can get his pre 2025 form back.

I can't. Played late last year and has done the full pre-season training block. He's primed.

dont get me wrong, id be playing him as well first up. Just as the season wears on id be still watching him closely.

Balta, Gibcus, Vlastuin & Miller would be the 4 key backs picked for round 1.

Gray, Broad, Trainor would be next in line. With 5 on the bench now maybe one of those gets a spot.

Banks, Short etc are more role players who can rotate HB etc

I think its more likely that Grijl starts on the wing and rotates to the HBF.
The back 6/7 is the hardest line to break into atm.
I would like to see Short out of the backline and moved into the midfield/hff. I think he offers something different in there.

I disagree.

He’s a solid interceptor and can be strong one v one. Also has a huge kick on him which is a great weapon. But personally I think his negatives outweigh the positives as a defender.

I don’t think his football IQ is great and that hurts the team a lot more in defense than up forward.
His short to medium kicking is inconsistent and he loses his feet a lot in contests. When you watch him closely he gets caught in hand offs when oppo is transitioning quickly. He loses focus and either misses crucial hand offs teammates ask of him or loses his direct oppo.

Personally I don’t hate Balta in our best 22 and I think Miller is a much better option along with Gibcus, Vlastuin, Broad, Banks, Trainor, Brown and potentially Grlj. Then you look at Campbell Grey starting to show a lot of signs being a really versatile athletic KP that will have trials down back.

Balta has never really got himself into an elite fitness level. Yearly we’ve seen him being down the back of time trials and running groups.
