I don't think he's allowed to buy what they are selling.

Someone like Sanders doesn’t even move the needle in a Butters trade. All it does is dilute it with an asset we don’t need.
I mean as a fairly recent top 10 pick he definitely has way more value than Joe Richards had last year and we were expected to believe that Richards moved the needle on Houston.

He's no Butters, but why are we talking like Riley Sanders has no value? Easily worth a first rounder. And saying we 'don't need him' is foolish; if we lost Butters we'd absolutely need more quality midfielders.

Trade butters for him

Watch him force a trade after 1 year to take 3 mil a year in Tasmania with 0 compensation

If he was involved in a trade to Port, I can guarantee he wouldn't want or "force" a trade to Tasmania in 2027 because of money when his clear reason of wanting or potentially wanting to move to Adelaide and Port is to be with family that are apparently contemplating moving there due to his brother playing for Norwood (I think) in SANFL. Now, he might, but wouldn't make sense.

Unless Tasmania offered a crap tonne of money and first round picks for Port, then why not do it, especially if it gives Port all the capital to get Zemes, Salopek, Rodan and the rest in that year. I'd be all for it.

I'm a big fan of Ryley Sanders who has thr potential to become a goal kicking midfielder but you would think he would want to go back home. He has a lot of potential but would find it hard to break into that midfield of Bont, Richards, Libba with Frejiah the young gun to come in as well.

I mooted it last year that he could be in a trade with Butters to the Bulldogs if Tassie got involved.

Butters and Houston is not even close to the same conversation.
I'd say the gap between Butters and 2025 Houston is waaaaaay closer than the gap between Sanders and 2025 Richards though.

I'd even say the gap between Butters and Sanders is considerably closer than the gap between Sanders and 2025 Richards.

3 first round picks and Sanders.

Would be ok to look at .

We are not going to get a decent look at hi end midfielders for possibly 10 years when Tasmania and eventually the northern territory come in.

Reckon it will be 2 first round picks and Sanders, or just 3 first round picks.

No-one wants to lose Butters. You need some great players to win flags and he's one of the best in the comp.

But if it is necessary, the way to do it and be a better team is this:

1. leave a lot of space in the cap to make sure we can match any FA contract he is offered.

2.Then trade him out for someone like Sanders and enough draft capital to ensure we can get all our academy stars: Dougie, Pilot, Rodan(s), Salopek (s), Percy Burgoyne and Tambe.

3. And with all that salary cap we have freed up, hit this year's FA pool very hard: Bailey, Toby Greene and/or Walsh and even a top up or two to fill gaps in the list (like Hardwick in 2003): Zac Williams, Gresham, Jack Martin, Fritsch, Prestia or Vlaustin.

4. We should have enough draft capital and salary space to land past targets like Rogers, who could end up the Butters replacement.

It will hurt like hell losing Zac but done properly and boldly, can be of benefit.

While I don’t disagree with you. It is infuriating that we may have to lose someone like Butters to get all our academy and FS picks. Whereas Brisbane and GC only had to trade out late first to get a bunch of seconds and thirds.

I actually think this iniquity is the reason the AFL gave us access to Dougie.

This is looking at it backwards, and shows how port fans expect to be treated.

They didn’t “give us access”

By the rules they set and that other clubs have used he was always eligible.

The only question was would they **** us over and deny us despite this.

They didn’t do us any favours , and wouldn’t do us any favours.

In the end I have no doubt the only consideration would have been that having port land a top player via the same rules other teams have is no more a problem for the afl than denying him would have been and the bad look especially when there’s teams with highly rated players like Walker and Bewick that don’t want to rock the boat.

Manifest = Zak Butters to sign extension 2 with 8 year total contract then Caleb Serong to come to Port after 2027 via free agency (restricted) as they are close mates. Also Nas to be traded in 2027 to port. 👍

Plus all the f/s and academies, Pilot, Salopek, Rodan, etc in 2027.

Job done

What on earth are you on about.
Houston was shit in 2025 and Richards finished 4th in our B & F.

And the gap between Butters and Sanders is the length of the Nullarbor at present but i do admit he has great potential.
