In the match sim he passed a couple to Kemp on lead from around 40 that hit him on the chest without breaking stride. He kicks it hard. Another kick to Ison in pocket split two defenders. Not many could do it. Bit of Stewart Dew the way he kicks it

Why I think he will play first game. Voss would be keen to see Byrne Jagga Ison Florent etc delivering it inside fwd 50

I like how we picked three very good left footers in the draft
Also is a genuine small forward who tackles, chases and marks overhead well.

Bloody Oath. And knows where the goals are

I knew nothing about him before drafted but he is very impressive. Love to know what the knock was on him and why he drifted so far in draft. To me he looks AFL made

I haven't seen him play but I will say this, my daughters played netball with his sister and she went hard at everything (although this did lead to her having issues not stepping or making contact) - really genuine family.

If your thoughts are on the money (and I have no reason to doubt) landing a key defender, small forward and a mid forward like Ison in the one draft with outside runners like Smith and Walker either side looks like an era defining haul.

Talor was forced to play more as midfielder in a poor Rebels team who couldn't get the ball into the forward line.

He only played predominantly as a dedicated small forward when playing for Vic Country - which is where he impressed with his goal sense and lead up marking.

He also missed a Vic country game in WA with a hamstring injury from memory

Think he will play Rd One? The more I see the more I believe he will

It happens all the time with small forwards, a lot of them are taken later in the draft.

I honestly believe there is a massive air of arrogance around the forward position within elite AFL circles. We could not recruit one to save ourselves but so many AFL clubs are in the same boat. Then you get some clubs, many of whom are elite clubs who are very good at recruiting natural forwards. Collingwood, Brisbane, Hawthorn in the Clarkson era, Richmond in the Hardwick era. Some recruiters can identify them but I would say many have no idea.

I believe the talent to play forward, coach forwards and identify forwards is a rare and specialised ability. Wright has the ability to identify forward talent and we are very lucky to have him because he has straightened us out there I have no doubt.

I am a little dirty on the club because I believe we have no natural forwards who have a forwards brain on our coaching panel. I think there is a belief, particularly at Carlton, that anyone can coach the forwards and I am concerned about it. I don't think it was a mistake that Eddie Betts went to Geelong as a specialist coach and they won a flag.

Having played a lot of footy and tried to play forward being mostly a defender and sometimes a midfielder. I can say with 100% certainty that being able to play there is difficult and relies heavily on instinct and the ability to be mentally a step or two ahead of your opponent and to position well and out position them is something that players are probably born with and develop by playing there. It's part of the creative centre of their brain. I believe it's essential to have our forwards coached by those who have that and can train that.

Byrne to me looks to have all that. Just positions well but he's hard at the contest which is a must in modern footy due to congestion and the demands to win and halve contests. He tackles and chases really well which is a must. His overhead marking is really strong which means his opponent can't just drift off him and double team another player and he gives us another option when we are going forward. He crumbs really well and another thing he has to his game is that he has excellent ability to go into the centre and impact there and probably will in a few years time.

I think Byrne will be there round one and could have the best natural forward brain and talent of all the players on our list. I think he is someone who when he gets into real AFL games will shine.

In match sims he look a natural forward. Want to see him in games now

The combo of Byrne Evans & Ainsworth as smaller forwards is exciting. All well skilled but also tough and can tackle

I prefaced that point with 'don't give me garbage stats'...

Easy eye test for the concerned out there!

  • Ben Allen
  • Greg Williams
  • Bailey Dale
  • Max Holmes
  • Lachie Whitfield
  • Buddy Franklin
  • Darren Jarman
  • Ang Christou
  • Craig Bradley
  • Eddie Betts
  • Heath Scotland

You don't need stats to know these guys were/are elite by foot. Why?? They are fed the ball to take THAT kick...

You don't need stats to know these guys will get a tag/heavy marker to force them onto opposite foot or block their run. This is what eye test looks like, especially in the junior world!

Simple question, which will reflect your own 'eye' test, unless you are a stats nerd!

How do you feel when Ollie gets the ball by himself and he is heading towards center wing after a bounce at top speed and about to let go of a 40 meter pass to a leading small forward running from L to R or R to L in his vision (not directly at him) v Newman/Elijah in the same position??

I would prepare for the worst and hope for the best if it is Ollie.

That's eye test...
I actually thought champion data did a great job with their recent practices last year feeding data about degree of difficulty combined with kicking efficiency. They then came up with a top 5 or more players that were classified as the best kicks in the afl. Was it Jack Silvagni that was our number ranked player??

According to champion data Ben Ainsworth is equal first (83%) for inside 50 retention. So if we can pair him up with Cotterell Williams and EH we should be cooking.

Not being from the sandy dragons or oakleigh chargers doesn't help. Private school boys get overrated. Good luck getting drafted from the western jets.

I am not sure they did a "great" job. Ranked Naicos in the bottom 10 kicks in the AFL. I hate coll as much as the next non-mouth-breather but this is questionable to say the least. George was 4th worst. Dawson 3rd worst.

If I were CD and saw those results I'd take a good long look at the formula being used.

Id counter argue that it shouldn't be a forwards role to "find your own ball". If we were better at entering the 50, then we mightnt have a need for such defensive fwd pressure.

Fog was good for us in our 2023 run and made a big difference at the feet of two talented talls - in a depleted forward line more recently he's been exposed for being a bit of a one trick pony.

He'll need to improve his offensive side of he wants to lock a permanent spot in the new group.
I remember that.

He was playing front and centre well. Full purple patch at the perfect time.

Durdin was the brain fade in the way of everything throughout '25.

Didn't mean to single Fog out. My intent was more objective. Kick more goals, win more games. We parched in goalless qtrs way too often. Games where we were defending well.

Hayward will add some balance this season. Smart player.
McKay out of the goal square, with Hayward commanding respect and Kemp lurking sounds like a handful to me.

They all lead hard. The options will be there but we gotta hit them on the proverbial.

Critical for the wings to deliver.

Carroll is made for the wing. No brainer for me. Let him loose.

Zac looks like he’s going back to half back.

Played there last week. I reckon he is gong to be a bit of a mister fix it. Still like him having minutes in middle and sometimes up forward

With Saad, Newman, Haynes, Weitering, Florent we have enough experience down back. I really hope we start to see Wilson, Cowan, Charleson, Ollie, Monahan, Carroll, Lucas maybe Ison or Chesser playing more and giving us run from defence and wing

They are the future along with Dean
