I said at the time we should have taken Lachie Schultz with this pick. He has already been traded for a rd 1 & rd 2 pick. That rd 1 pick ended up being Jonty Faull. So taking Ross cost us the ability to get Jonty Faull twice over.

Now we extend him for 3 years. Gagf Blair, I can list manage better than you. Ffs, why extend him, nobody else wants him anyway.
You honestly believe that Schultz would have been traded for a 1st and 2nd if he'd been picked by Richmond? We would've been lucky to get a 3rd, Butler style.

Schultz was contracted. When we traded contracted players like Deledio, D Rioli and S Bolton, we have tended to do ok from the exchange I would say.

Yes, but these are different standard players. Schultz is a decent player but how often would he have played? He would have had to go past Lambert and Castagna and possibly Caddy when he went forward. No matter how much Castagna was pilloried he played his role to perfection in Dimma's team (except for goal kicking obviously).

Don't get me wrong, I actually rate Schultz, I just think that Ross has more strings to his bow, and when you are the 12-18th player picked that is way more valuable than a 1 position HFF.

The conversation was more around doing business with Collingwood, especially trading for their F1's. Schultz secured an f1 & rd 2 pick from them. The players taken with these two picks were Clay Hall & Jonty Faull. And the total mugs also traded their rd 1 pick in the 2021 draft for 2 late 20's picks at the 2020 draft - Reef McInness & Caleb Poulter. That rd 1 pick happened to secure Finn Callaghan for GWS.

Fair enough. I don't want decent picks that get gun players, I want average players and I don't care what they cost.

Happy to see Ross get a couple more years, will be used effectively as a buffer mid between the vets finishing up and the recent crop of kids taking over.

If he can build on his form from last year, he'll make a career for himself for sure

Farken unlucky to miss out on the 19 flag.
If he played in that game he would be talked about simular to Jack Graham IMO.

The way I feel about Ross is similar to how I felt about Houli and Grigg 2016 and before. I thought they were average, their weaknesses were frustrating, and that they would never be part of a flag team.

In the spirit of learning, I'm going to hold my judgment on Ross. I still default to thinking that he's a plodder role player who we will evolve past (a la Anthony Miles), but I'll put on my optimism hat and hope for growth.

Regardless, awesome effort for him to get a two year extension. I have no doubt he will try and get the most out of himself for it.

That pretty much sums it up for me too T4P.
I think it’s fair enough to re-sign him, in our current rebuild stage. He offers leadership and has shown a willingness to perform a number of roles thrown at him, including defensive forward and wing.
Interesting to see if he has another level? maybe a little improvement left in him, but I won’t be surprised in 2 years time if others have gone past him.

The difference between Ross and our other fairly pedestrian midfielders is that he uses the ball well. Doesn't waste many possessions. Sounds like he has had a great summer so it will be interesting to see if it translates. I've always rated him as a good solid player who hasn't quite had the opportunity that others have. Our Premiership mids then Taranto and Hopper recruited.

Ross can play at a good AFL level. I hope that with this extension the club trusts him more and he steps that occasional game into his standard.

He's had to work hard to get here. He deserves to be that player we all rely on.

Yeah I agree, it can come down to opportunities.
Interesting to see what role Yze has in mind for him. Ideally we are giving McAullife , Lalor and Smillie ( latter in the season) opportunities in the guts. Seth , Hotton and Cumming will also have some midfield minutes.
And there’s the 3 veterans Taranto, Hopper and Prestia.
Ross will play, just not sure what role.

Last year, he was sensational in the opening game against Carlton, looked every bit an AFL midfielder. But he was very hot and cold, throughout the season. There was a couple of games where he was a non contributor, albeit he may have been playing a defensive role for Yze.
He definitely gets moved around.Jack of all trades

Can't go in with Prestia, Taranto and Hopper as the main 3. Ross can play multiple roles. MacAuliffe has played some wing this preseason in order to find a second position so he can rotate through the middle. Lalor and Hotton forward. Smillie at his height must be able or learn to play multiple position.

Taranto can at least play forward, but Hopper and Prestia are solely centre square mids which means they will reduce the rotations, which is not good for our emerging mids.

Long season so plenty can happen, but we are horrible on the spread and covering defence with Prestia, Hopper and Taranto in the middle, the good sides just cut us up.

People are harsh markers - Ross is a good footballer and just hitting his prime now. If he can make his good games his normal games he more than holds his spot.

The one disappointment I had with him last year is I thought he'd hit the scoreboard more after Carlton.
