What if we go out in straight sets again?
Would mean a top four finish for the second year in a row

Only done that once in our history I believe? 2005 / 2006

Sure, it would be gutting to go out in straight sets again but if he's putting us in that position he's much better than I think and stays

If we have an average year in terms of injuries and luck and Nicks can still get us into top 4, I think that would be a great result personally

It would be strong evidence that 2025 wasn't just a fluke where we really cashed in on those factors to get us to 18 wins

Going to be a fascinating watch.

The first 22 rounds of 2025 - not much went wrong at all. IIRC for the round 1 game we were only missing Chayce Jones for a small injury.

2026 is going to be much tougher. Tougher schedule, we are now the hunted and unfortunately as the preseason has shown we wont have the dream run with injuries we have had the past 4 years.

Nicks (probably): "Yeah sure my game plan of slowly bombing it long to Dawson on the same wing all day got easily found out in September... BUT what if, hear me out... this year, we slowly bomb it long to Dawson on the same wing all day but we do it HARDER!!! No one will see that coming!!!"

Hardery for longery*

I think that's the exact wrong conclusion to draw from those facts.

The rarity of having a list capable of it is exactly why we can't waste it.

No top four coaches get sacked, regardless of whether we think someone else would do better

If we fall down to 8/9/10 this season off the back of a minor premiership it might force the club's hand...?

its very rare for a top 8 coach to be sacked. Grant Thomas is the last one..could be wrong?

Doing interviews claiming we 'weren't ready' for finals, and somehow this is a good thing.

If only there was someone who gets paid to get them ready.
Some people can learn on the job... whereas others don't have the brain power to reach the heights needed.

In the Nick's waffle interview with Cornes he talked about leanings from the finals losses... but when pressed on what he learnt... we need to get better.

Well no shit, but the problem is he doesn’t know what to do to make us better.

Unfortunately he just doesn’t have the smarts to be a top line coach & more suited to an assistant role as he is better with the relationship stuff.

We need our director to take over match day.

Exactly, premiership windows can often close quickly.

We can't waste this one with a coach who cannot match the best coaches when it matters.

We were not top 4 as went out in straight sets.

Malthouse & Ratten off the top of my head.
Matlhouse at Carlton wasnt sacked when in the top 8, he was out of it sitting well out. At Collingwood he had a succession plan he tried to back out of so I guess that counts. Ratten in his two club stint was sacked both times after finishing 10th.

On my Point Grant Thomas was sacked after losing an elimination final.

I think it feels like they were in finals because often they made finals the year before or were very close and just missed out. Im sure you are right, might be another one but my point is its very rare.

All i am saying is we could lose in straight sets again and i would find it hard to believe the club would sack Nicks. I think he would have to miss the finals to not be coaching us in 2027.

Malthouse was forced into the Pies succession plan by Eddie. He wanted to stay... & the Pies lost their premiership window... til Fly arrived.

I thought Ratten was sacked after finishing 8th, but perhaps that wss the prior year. He was moved on too early & Blues have got worse since. Glorious!

He wasnt forced into the succession plan, he was for it he planned with it with Eddie it was announced 2.5 years prior. He tried to change his mind during his last year after he won the flag and then bitched about it after. He got no sympathy because people arent idiots and can remember him openly endorsing the plan. I think it was the first sign Malthouse had lost his mind to be honest.

Lol, Malthouse wanted to remain as coach at the Pies... he was forced into the Buckley handover. He wasn't sticking around as Eddie originally suggested as he wanted to coach in his own right.

If only there was someone who gets paid to get them ready.

It’s worse than that, after the qualifying loss he was asked to provide a positive, and with a shit-eating grin, said along the lines, ‘well, all of our 23 have now played a final’. Like getting beaten in a final was somehow going to be a magical improvement.

He’s a legitimate coaching moron. They should have hit the panic button after the Eagles debacle. But you know us, every win is a good win.

We don’t know the extent that our director was pivotal to Lions match day. It’d be lovely if we managed to snaffle a critical piece, but they didn’t seem to go backwards and we definitely didn’t improve when the pressure of potential success arrived.
