And both tournaments Portugal topped their group with a game to spare winning two from 2 games and both times they lost their last group game by a scoreline of two nil. Both times they played and beat Turkey and the Czech Republic in the group phase. Both times Italy went out in the first round of the knockouts. There'd be more too.

It's not footy but history repeats in sport. Big Vic just loves sports, history and stats.

Good on him.

2000 Melbourne demons lose AFL Grand Final, Italy loses euro final in extra time after leading I'm normal time

2021 Melbourne wins AFL grand final, Italy wins euro final on penaltie after trailing in normal time.

Only grand final and euro finals this century. Their last appearances games in the 60's before the 2000's.

No team to lose to Gold Coast during the season has won the premiership
  1. After beating Geelong in their debut match, North Melbourne did not beat an eventual premier again until they beat Essendon (for their only loss in 33 games) in 1950. Gold Coast were 11 seasons short of that record
  2. The first team to lose to Footscray and win the premiership was Melbourne in 1941 — three years after Footscray first played in the finals
  3. The first team to lose to Hawthorn and win the premiership was Melbourne in 1940, so Gold Coast fell one year short of equalling that when they beat the Lions last season
  4. Melbourne did not defeat an eventual premier between defeating North Melbourne in 1975 and defeating Hawthorn in 1988
  5. St. Kilda did not defeat an eventual premier between beating Hawthorn in 1978 and again beating the Hawks in 1991, though they drew with Richmond in 1980 immediately before the Tigers won eleven on end

Nick Riewoldt in 2001 had four different coaches in his first four games.

After overcoming injury he played for the Sandringham reserves in his first game as an AFL listed player. The next week he played in the Sandringham senior side. A week later in R15 he made his AFL debut under Malcolm Blight in his last game as an AFL coach. Then in his second AFL game in R16 he was coached by Grant Thomas.

The two men named Paul who represented Geelong in the 1994 and 1995 losing GF sides both had sons named Tom who would play in the AFL but not for the Cats.

Tom Brown is currently with Richmond and Tom Couch played three games for Melbourne in 2012.

As a bonus these two surnames might make the reader of this post think about a chocolate coloured sofa.

the two Jamie’s in the afl are both 1992 born small forwards in Jamie Cripps and Jamie Elliott and both broke their ankles against arch rivals with Cripps against Freo in 2023 and Elliott against Carlton in 2021

Still hard to believe this happened over 18 years ago now, but on 22 February 2008 Western Bulldogs rookie Jarrad Grant missed a pre-season game against the Essendon Bombers after being stung by a stingray in Port Phillip Bay that morning. Grant had been recruited to the Bulldogs from the Dandenong Southern Stingrays in the previous year's draft with his original club being the Frankston Bombers, and the incident happened on what would have been the late Steve Irwin's 46th birthday, Irwin having been a life-long supporter of the Essendon Bombers.

Dustin Fletcher is the only player who ever played against both Fitzroy and GWS in the AFL.
