Prediction Round 1, 2026 - Best 23

It should have been an easy 5 goals win, we went to bombing down the line in kick outs half way through the 4th quarter every time they kicked a behind (similar to the 4th quarter last week). Played 15 minutes to win the game.

That's rewriting history.

We barely won a contest in those 15 minutes and were getting utterly spanked by Ports midfield. To be fair, we were getting utterly beat up throughout the 2nd half and only got the win because we were able to counter-punch whilst Butters was off the field. Normal service resumes once he returns to play which is us clenching up and hoping to break Ports wall (and we do waste a few opportunities to do so and relieve pressure)

It was a game we stole, not one we had any business winning comfortably. Only takes a gander at stoppage clearances numbers to how dire it was.

4 goals up with 15 minutes to go should be an easy win. That's was how we played last year, we rarely win clearances and score heavily on the rebound. It was a stupid tactic that Nicks decided to use in the last 15 minutes and it isn't the first he has used this.

Nick's didn't decide shit in that game. We were pushed there because of Port Adelaide's midfield went up a gear and belted the living crap out of ours for 15 minutes (and had for long periods of the third as well). You can't play attacking, expansive football if you can't win a clearance and generate field territory. No team is going to let you chip out when your pinned in your D50 without inducing extreme risk.

Also, what are you talking about? Our clearance differential was -2 per game, not "rarely". It wasn't our game, but not something we abandoned by any stretch of the imagination. The Achillies heel of our group is there is level of midfield performances that blows ours out of the water. What happened in those 15 minutes against Port would be a precursor for what happened in the first quarter of the semi (and the run against Brisbane as well, where again, our midifeld couldn't handle a top tier midfield going at full pelt).

That's the problem, we didn't attack in the last 15 minutes. All we did after they kicked a behind was just bomb the ball to the right for kick out to set up more players in defensive, this is what we are training not to this year and did this for 3 quarters last week except for the last quarter. Nicks has used this tactic in other games when he wants to slow the game so clearly it's something they want to do given Davis coached last week.

My point around clearance was we rarely win this stats in games but can still win games because we are effective at scoring on the rebound so had we continue to do this then it would have been an easy 5 goals instead of just bombing the ball, causing a turnover to allow them to score.

yeah tend to agree. Nicks resorted to perfect football to preserve the score. He did this a lot in games. the fact it happened so often does suggest this is planned instruction over ability

Adelaide has finalised its leaders for 2026 with two new faces joining this year’s leadership group.

The group will again be led by Jordan Dawson who enters his fourth consecutive season as captain and will include two vice captains in the experienced Ben Keays and Alex Neal-Bullen.

Reilly O’Brien and Darcy Fogarty will also return as leaders this year, with Isaac Cumming and Riley Thilthorpe added to the group for the first time.

As part of a thorough and clearly defined process, the leaders were nominated by their teammates in consultation with coaching staff before being endorsed by the Club’s Board and senior management.

Crows Senior Coach Matthew Nicks described the group as an appropriate mix of proven leadership and emerging influence.

I think we will start with

Laird - Butts - Michallaney
Milera - Murray - Worrell
Jones - Dawson - Ah Chee
Keays - Thilthorpe - ANB
Pedlar - Fogarty - Walker
McAndrew - Peatling - Rachele
Soligo - Cook - Berry - Cumming - ROB

I hope we end the year with
Bond - Keane - Michallaney
Milera - Murray - Worrell
Cumming - Curtin* - Ah Chee
Keays - Thilthorpe - ANB
Rachele# - Fogarty - Dawson*
McAndrew - Rankine# - Peatling**
Soligo** - Pedlar - Cook - Draper** - Murray

Always have either Curtin or Dawson in and always have Rachele or Rankine in and then the others just rotate accordingly

Not that it matters, but I would expect Cumming would be named ahead of Jones on field. And I’d be surprised if we go with a second ruck only player, but it might be more palatable to our coaches than ROB being forced out of the 23. It might end up being how most clubs use the 23rd spot anyway.

I am only speculating because he may be underdone and on limited minutes.
If he plays this week, then absolutely starts ahead

So round 1 we will be missing:
Curtin
Keane
Rankine
Draper
Soligo
Peatling
Hinge
Berry

Touch and go:
Ah Chee
Cumming.

We are not beating the pies at the MCG with that injury list.
