Just got back from the Dees/Saints game. Young fella has followed CJ to the Dees. So I took him to the first game.

CJ was great when he got involved. No glaring errors. Ran and provided options coming out of defence and didn't get caught out. Involved in two early scoring plays and very vocal on the ground chatting with Lever. He spent a bit of time on the bench. Loved Mihocek's game. Loved Latrelle's game for a 1st gamer. Kosi is a freak. And Van Rooyen could be anything. Good to see Steele get a goal.

The Stains deserved to lose today. Long may the Ls continue.

I'm not necessarily opposed to his view. It makes logical sense that the teams that play in R0 will be more match fit than teams that don't especially in last quarters where we see players pulling up with cramp every season.

In effect this is an advantage for the teams that played a game the week before. I'm not sure why teams that played R0 can't be matched against each other in R1 and then revert to normal fixturing from R2 onwards.
I think the Dees winning off the back of half a game in three weeks puts this to bed.

Case closed.

Exactly the same issue from 10 years ago - they went hard at free recruits, broke their salary cap and it was all in pursuit of slightly above average or average players.

Still early days, but if they cannot improve form across the season - they've sold the farm (their salary cap) on a false dawn. TDK seems to be the only real win out of their trades - he's been pretty solid last two games.

EDIT: Just happy for Demons beating them - Saints punting their captain Steele at the end of last season was such rubbish behaviour. Basically get what they have coming to them, when you get rid of a player who sets standards.
Their best player is a mid season draftee from Box Hill

Thanks for posting. Glad to see CJ going OK.

It hurts a parent when they see their children make a decision that will ensure a lifetime of pain. I feel for you.

I know max just signed a new deal with the saints but he is exactly the player i would target to squeeze from the saints. There isnt going to be aheap of money laying around for upvabd comers.

This year and next year it would’ve been great. When the contract starts to bite in the last 3 years that’s when buyers remorse really kicks in.

If he, or Merrett for that matter, had helped us snag a flag or two there would have been no buyers remorse whatsoever.

Many of us thought this all along. Petracca is a better player and was 100% confirmed as available for trade, while Merrett was the opposite.

Sure Bombers talked to us in the room, but i'm pretty sure they did that just to waste our time.
Rosa and Scott wanted him gone. Everyone in the room were acting in good faith. It all came from Welsh and probably sheedy behind the scenes.

Would the dopers be better off shortening zach’s contract to end this year to access FA R1 compensation (assuming they finish bottom 3)? Would that be allowed by the afl?

Contracts are renegotiated all the time. Sure, it's usually an extension, but why not?

EFC: Hi Zach, Would you prefer to keep your dusty old 2 year contract @ 800k.....or this shiny new 1yr contract for 1.2M? (1.4, x.x?). At some point he would take it and run. Given how desperate he is to get out of there, he may even take less!

Then at end of year, he's a RFA and can go where he wants on good coin. Bombers get a (single!) top-5 pick as compensation.

Interesting tangential thinking - as long as they pay him what he's due in 2027, I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. Would hamstring them a bit with his 2027 salary being counted in their cap for that year, I guess.
No. Tampering.
If the AFL allowed GCS's salary dump in Bowes' case, this hypothetical isn't too much different, is it?
