They never seem to drop off except for Hawthorn between 2017-23.

Expect to see one of these teams in the Grand Final this Year again. Hawks-Swans looks like a sure bet as with 2014

I mean do you not also fit the bill on this?

When has Collingwood dropped off?

These clubs operate better than most of their competitors, it's not a coincidence they contend for premierships more often than not despite people saying they are looked after by the AFL.
Throw in Collingwood who are in the mix most years and you have the big 4 of the AFL era in my opinion.

We had our period in the wilderness. Should be a decent sustained run at getting a flag hopefully. Whether we win one or not is another thing.

Still got a top 4 finish in there and a bit unlucky to miss out finals in 2019 as well

I can cry all I want about the swans academy and the recruitment pool, but being a well run club got them that opportunity to set that up, having stability and long term commitment and a good culture created the success, I havent got a doubt even if the AFL said No, they would still be consistently one of the best performing teams

"They never seem to drop off except for those 6 years recently when Hawthorn dropped off."
to be fair, we're currently in our second worst drought in 60 years

We're not consistently up there. We do the complete opposite, ie we rise to glory, bottom out, rise to glory, bottom out.....

Trace our history from say, the late 50s when we first made finals, after being easy-beat cellar dwellers for decades.

We win the flag in '61, make a GF in '63, by 1965 we're flat stony last again.

We rise again, have a dominant 70s, 3 flags from 4 GFs, by 1980 we're well out of finals contention again.

We rise again in '83, playing in 8 of the next 9 Gfs, winning 5 of them. By '96, we almost didn't exist. We have a loong period in doldrums.

We rise again in '08, playing 5 GFs in 8 seasons, winning 4 of them, including a three-peat. Then we bottom out again for several years.

Hopefully we are rising again now.

It's proved a better 'strategy' than Sydney, Geelong, Collingwood etc. We've won 13 flags in that time, compared to 2, 5 and 3 respectively.

There wasn't really any advantage to 'bottoming out' until the year 2000, IMO, when StKilda made some serious hay out of p1 (Riewoldt) and p2 (Kosi).

Correction, if you're looking at period 1961 to now, Cats have won 6, not 5.

Probably best to focus on the AFL era.

You've been rising for the last few years, your window is the next few years...

Its pretty crowded though, so no givens. I give the Hawks maybe a 20% chance of winning it this year.

Must be really tough for those clubs having other fans talk about all the help they get from the AFL, while getting looked after by the AFL.

If you ever get a chance to read about St. Kilda's history it is littered with board room coups after coups. The only time it was stable was during Allan Jean's tender (1960-1976). If the top is poor then it will filter though to the playing group.

If Day comes back and stays healthy maybe we can bump that to 25….

Hawthorn is far from always up there. We drop, a lot, but when we rise, we rise quickly, an usually get a flag. In fact, you look at our overall history, we are statistically less likely to compete

Well, Geelong have only been consistently up there in the last 20 years. Before that, when I was a kid, we were a laughingstock.
I think the main reason why is because Geelong were the only team about 20 years ago who announced that they never planned to bottom out. With every other team involved in a cyclical race to the bottom, it was actually quite easy for us to pursue that policy.
It might be a bit more difficult now that some other teams have decided to do the same.

The 'Costa Cook Mantra'

How exactly are Geelong looked after by the AFL?
We don't get high draft picks and only play 10 games per year in our home city, compare this to Fremantle who play 13 games a year in their home city.
