Autopsy Autopsy against Cats - 15 straight

Blind Freddy could see how devoid of class our backline has been for five years. On Friday night the callers were saying a rebounding defender is nearly the most important player these days as it is a transition game.
And yet our list managers give us this mix after six plus years?
How about the club addresses this failure?
I mean when they let McKay go their plan was Pink and Nyoun.
C’mon Mate. It’s hard to find a good List Manager. You know how many hours they put in. 😵‍💫

Well it is on him, of course.
Giving him a chance to see if he's any good as a defender no doubt. I think making him do this in the 2's would be similar to him doing it against richmond. On friday night it was an exercise that cost goals. We only have 1 Hardeman to come in ... does he replace McHappmeal or McCookameal? Does Harvey come into the equation also?
I think you need to reward VFL form at some stage. If Harvey is having good games and is ticking the boxes, then he has to come in. The backline isnt a humming 355 stroker. Its running on 2 cylinders.

Hardeman has to come in and Harvey has to be a serious consideration. If the club has moved Colby from half back (I dont like that to be honest) then we need someone that can move the ball by foot. Harvey appears to be doing that in the VFL.

🤷‍♂️

if they do come in, they need a run of at least half a dozen games. Its cooked AF right now. Happy Meal has to go. No more of this shitshow.

Small positives but we matched them comfortably for 2 quarters from midway through the first to about midway through the third.

No coincidence that's when our pressure and effort was up.

As soon as it started to wane near three quarter time, geez we'd love that 10 minutes back, their system kicked in.

During those periods, they completely outspread and outran us and their foot skills were next level compared to ours.

Their system is so simple, very similar to Collingwood's, they clog the corridor, force the ball defensively along the wings and then attack from there.

They always keep shape when attacking by usually allowing only one player to attack the contest ensuring multiple outlets.

Them kicking 16.3 in the second half just shows how much our system, whatever it is, fell apart. Turning the ball over by foot through the corridor is okay against the weak teams but it's death against the good ones.

We simply have too many unathletic players to keep up with the genuinely good teams and their game plans.

We still haven't grown up.

We can and should've beaten Brisbane and GWS.

At worst we should've fought- and that includes focus - out the Geelong game. 20 points was an honourable loss. 49 points deserves no walking hand jobs just for competing for a bit.

West Coast was inexcusable.

If we flop over against Sydney it'll be bloody disheartening from an overall progress pov.

They're not babies anymore and the Geelong that flogged us had a few kids themselves.

But not to worry. We know we're improving. Maybe the selectors can pick and drop Pink and Banch on Thursday night to make an example of them.

Absolutely and it’s Carlton’s problem too. They get slaughtered on defensive transition because their midfield is treacle led by decrepit Paddy Cripps.

The scary thing is we’re relying on Parker and Darling to stand up every week and these guys are one season from retirement also..

Completely agree.

So why aren’t we?

Why are Powell and McDonald getting selected? Why are we dropping Pink for Corr? This is the frustration.
Pink v Corr is C grader for C grader. We don't have anyone ready in that position who moves the needle. Has to be addressed in the off-season via trade.

McDonald, Powell etc. get selected because they are fit and play their roles. I'm not saying it should be the case, but realistically that is the answer. Every club has role players. We are coming from such a long way back that we have had to import B grade players who can follow instructions. I would replace LMac with Hardemann and Powell with Wardlaw this week. I know it's hard to counsel patience after we've sat through years of dreck, but realistically we still need to be patient.

We have improved this year: Scott and Fisher can't get a game. It's replacing the old, known quantity C graders (LMac, Corr/Pink, Powell) that will raise our floor. Are their replacements ready? Only one way to find out. Do we pull the trigger versus Sydney? Versus Crows? Or after the bye?

I'm firmly in the sooner category - I'd like to see us fire a shot whilst the season is live rather than stumble our way until it is gone either way.

I’ve got a trade special for us.

We package up Corr and Logue for Sam Taylor.

Think about it. GWS will love the narrative of Corr coming home! And two players for one is such a sweet deal!

How about Logue and Pink for Sam Collins from GC?. GC can really promote the pink guernseys the wear..

Harvey and Hardeman for LMac and Zurhaar is an immediate upgrade. Currently and imo. Colby forward of centre and running goals is the prize when we have when the back line has fleet of foot ball users. Goater has hopefully finished breaking mirrors, walking under ladders and killing Chinamen ....

I couldn't watch the whole game but I could see which players will make it. This is also based on previous performances.

Comben - ✅

Logue - ✅

Corr - ❌

Lmac - ❌

Zurhaar - ✅️ (I think the backline is the right idea but this should've been explored during preseason not now like we did with Comben in 2024 - just feels rushed)

Daniel - ✅

Parker - ✅

Simpkin - ✅

Wardlaw - ✅

FOS - ✅

LDU - ✅

Stephens - ✅

PC - ✅

Trembath- ✅

Blamires - ✅

Larkey - ✅

Darling - ✅

Xerri - ✅

Sheezel - ✅

Duursma - ✅️ (this one needs to work in our favour the most of anyone)

Powell - ❌️ (trade)

Spargo - ✅️ (going early on this but he knows his role and what is required. Will keep playing.)

Dova - ✅️ (going really early on this one but hes our best small forward other than PC that needs continuity at the elite level)

With all these ticks you might think we should be top 4 but I'm not looking at that. What I'm looking for is what we should look like down the line when this group has got new players getting used to their positions and they look a lot more cohesive. I swear I can see what we're trying to do but when a elite system in Geelong at their home ground absolutely strangles you until the game opens up, its a huge task. Especially with all the usual suspects killing us. **** Geelong and that stadium.

I've left out Goater, Archer, George, Hardeman, Dawson and Whitlock because we haven't seen enough games or any games from them.

I think we are being forced to play 1 KPD extra which is killing our movement hence why Zurhaar is back there to provide run. You take out Corr and chuck in Hardeman in form, we look a lot more potent offensively.

Clarko should continue to persist with Zurhaar at HBF and look to inject more actual HBF types around him so they can swarm forward at will. I think we struggle to bring numbers forward to support and run which makes hitting the next disposal more difficult.

Pink is not Silvagni or Scarlett, no, but he is objectively better than Corr on almost every metric. It’s more than just “player x vs player y” though, it’s about the message it sends and the standard being set.
Likewise, the net loss or benefit of dropping Powell or McDonald for a kid playing in the 2’s wouldn’t necessarily be noticeable but it would be a statement that positions are earned and are only guaranteed when form warrants it. We’ve also seen the ceiling of those two players at the highest level. We’re yet to know what some of our young players are even capable of. We don’t need these poor “leaders” burning the ball or putting in hand arsed efforts anymore. We’ve got better senior players now.
On that - Simpkin absolutely deserves his spot this year.

But it IS also about best player for the team on the week. Nobody can convince me that Kostanty wouldn’t have been a better option than at least 3 other players. Had Wardlaw played, Blamires should’ve replaced Powell. Based on effort and based on output.

Selection integrity has been an issue at this club as far as i can remember. I thought it might improve under Clarkson. I was wrong. Oh well. Far be it from me to suggest improvements to a club that has allowed a 15th straight loss to a beatable rival.

Contrary to popular belief, anyone that thinks Pink is in long term discussions probably should forget about that.

He's in the now discussions like when he was recruited but will not or should not feature down the line. We simply need to have a stronger KPD line.

Nah, I cant agree. I thinks Pinks negatives far outweigh Corrs negatives.

Both make mistakes with the ball that cost goals

Corr is substantially a better 1v1 defender

Corr has a lot more mongrel and fight

I think Corr actually nudges pink out.

They’re both shit though.
